Hai Nan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles 海南星洲牛肉粉 (Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre)

Beef Noodle (Dry) $5
Hai Nan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles 海南星洲牛肉粉 has been operating for close to 70 years. The stall used to be located at Cuppage Centre before moving to its current location at Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre.

Tip: Visit during off-peak hour as the queue is known to be slow moving.

The beef noodle is served in either dry or wet version for $4 or $5.

Beef Noodle (Dry) $5
This bowl of Beef Noodle (Dry) $5 came with generous slices of beef meat.

Beef Noodle (Dry) $5
I felt that the slices of beef were overcooked as they were on the tough end and not as tenderised (or melt in the mouth) as what I hoped for. Thankfully, the dark, rich, gooey sauce made up for it. The sauce was not salty and had hints of beefy flavour. The sauce complemented the beef slices and thick bee hoon well.

The bowl of accompanying cloudy brown soup was tasty with hints of beefy flavours too.

Old Long House Popiah 老長屋薄餅 (Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre)

$1.60 Popiah
The origin of Popiah was believed to be from the Fujian Province in China. It is also known as the Spring Roll as it was made and eaten during Spring period when the farmers harvest their vegetables.

In Singapore, the older generation would understand the significance of Popiah as it was a household dish in the past. Popiah would be eaten during significant occasions and provided a good bonding opportunity.
Old Long House Popiah 老長屋薄餅 is located at Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre. This stall is located at a corner of the hawker centre and its not hard to find it as it is located along the same row as Hai Nan Xing Zhou Beef Noodles and Lai Heng Cooked Food Stall.
The Popiah is sold for $1.60 each.
Each piece is freshly made upon order.
$1.60 Popiah
This $1.60 Popiah from Old Long House Popiah stall at Kim Keat Food Centre is surprisingly delicious. The popiah was tightly packed and full of ingredients. Despite its plain and boring appearance, each bite was accompanied with little burst of flavours and texture. There was a crunch with every mouthful too!
$1.60 Popiah
Another look at ingredients in the popiah.

This is one of the best popiah I have eaten. Give it a try!

Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle 潮洲魚丸粿條面 (Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre)

Fishball Noodle (Mee Pok Dry) $3.50
If you are a fan of old school style fishball noodle, you got to visit Chao Zhou Fishball Noodle 潮洲魚丸粿條面 at Kim Keat Palm Market & Food Centre. Do take note of their opening day and hours if you intend to visit as they can be closed between 3 to 4 days in a week.
It is hard to miss this stall as it has the longest queue in the entire hawker centre.
The fishballs are handmade early in the morning.
The fishball noodle are sold at $3.50 per bowl. Each extra piece of fishball would cost $3.50!
Fishball Noodle (Mee Pok Dry) $3.50
This is the $3.50 dry version Fishball Mee Pok with chilli. The sauce consist of a mixture of ketchup and chilli sauce with pork lard. The mee pok was perfectly cooked and was soft yet springy. What drew the crowd was the handmade fishballs. The fishballs were huge in size and bouncy. It does not taste like those you get at most other fishball stalls where you would taste more flour and salt.

Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 来興香菇肉脞面 (Toa Payoh)

Kway Teow Noodles (Dry) $5
Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 来興香菇肉脞面 is a very popular bak chor mee stall in Toa Payoh. They used to be located at Blk 51 but have shifted to Blk 73 in late 2018. Their relocation is good news for most foodies as it is now walking distance from Toa Payoh MRT station and Interchange.
Do not be deceive when you visit the stall and notice that there is no queue. They have adopted a queue system where you would be given a number after ordering and making payment. There is a sign next to the stall showing the number when the food is ready for collection.

I visited during lunch time on weekdays and slightly more than half an hour during each visit. Each time, the mee pok was already sold out!
Bee Tai Mak (Soup) $5
I saw many people ordering the soup version and decided to give it a try. Boy, I had no regrets. The $5 Bee Tai Mak (Soup) tasted way better than the dry chilli version.
Bee Tai Mak (Soup) $5
The bowl of Bee Tai Mak came with slices of braised chinese mushroom, lean meat, minced meat, bean sprouts, seaweed, liver, pork lard and even mock abalone. This whole combination provided different combination of taste and texture to the dish. The pork lard and beansprouts gave it a crisp and crunchy dimension while the mushroom provided the soup with so much flavour.

This is one of the best soup bak chor mee I have tried.
Kway Teow Noodles (Dry) $5
The $5 Kway Teow Noodles (Dry) came with similar ingredients as the soup version. The bowl of soup that accompanied it tasted drastically different from the soup version of minced meat noodle.
Kway Teow Noodles (Dry) $5
The taste of the dry minced meat noodle was average. The sauce and chilli did not combine well with the ingredients. The chilli was just very spicy and lack the fragrance. As a result, the taste of the chilli overwhelmed the other taste of the ingredients and the sauce.

Go for the soup version! That is the food to try out!

Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee 天天来炒福建虾面 (Toa Payoh)

If you are a fan of Hokkien Prawn Mee, you would have probably heard of this stall before. Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee is a very popular Hokkien Prawn Mee located at Toa Payoh Lorong 1. Unlike its stall name, even if you visit the stall daily, it does not open every day.

Personally, I have always wanted to visit this stall for many years. But due to its location, I did not visit the stall. It is 10 minute walk from Braddell MRT station and 15 minute walk from Toa Payoh MRT station. Yes, it is walkable from Toa Payoh MRT station, provided you know all the short cuts! I only found out about this recently.

I heard that there are long queues during lunch time and that it would be at least a 30 minutes wait. Hence, I visited in the morning for breakfast. As I went at 8am on a weekday, there was no queue. The Hokkien Prawn Mee comes in $4, $5, $8 and $10 version. There is also a $18 version suitable for 3 to 4 pax.

Unlike the version at Golden Mile Food Centre, Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee’s version is creamy and gooey. Overall, it was delicious as each strand of noodle was coated with sweet, tasty and fragrant sauce (broth). The serving given for $4 was generous too.

Interestingly, the noodles seems to have been cut as they were shorter than usual. This made it a lot easier to eat using the spoon, instead of chopsticks, which to me is a better way of enjoying the Hokkien Prawn Noodles. This is because, each spoonful would be accompanied with more sauce/broth.

Ps: I am never good with language especially when it comes to dishes such as Hokkien Prawn Mee. But I must state that this is a very decent plate Hokkien Prawn Mee.

Seletar Sheng Mian & Mian Fen Guo (Toa Payoh Lorong 8)

Sheng Mian $5
Seletar Sheng Mian & Mian Fen Guo, a hawker stall, has been highly raved about by many foodies. Many have raved about its sheng mian, chilli and soup.

Interestingly, Seletar Sheng Mian & Mian Fen Guo is located at Kebun Baru Food Centre and Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Food Centre. I was told that it has a third outlet at Aljunied. However, I am unable to verify this over the internet.

I had tried visiting the stall before at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Food Centre, but had no luck then as the stall was closed although it was a Friday. This time, I was glad that I got to try it at long last. I visited on a Friday during lunch time. Despite the queue at the stall, the turnover was fast as there were 2 persons in the stall cooking the noodles, 1 person preparing the ingredients and 1 person taking orders and collecting the payment.
Sheng Mian $5

I ordered the $5 dry version Sheng Mian with chilli. It came with 4 pieces of prawns and slices of pork meat. Personally, I felt that the chilli, which played a critical role in any dry noodle dish, was disappointing. It was spicy but not fragrance. As a whole, the noodles with the chilli was average. Taste wise, it was not out of the world. But the soup was delicious. It was so tasty, robust and sweet that I finished every single drop and did not feel thirsty at all (no MSG).
Sheng Mian $5

Maybe I should try its soup version instead in the next opportunity. Do note that the hawker stall will be undergoing renovation for 3 months from 22 April 2019.

Kway Chap 粿汁 (Blk 93, Toa Payoh)

This Kway Chap 粿汁 stall at Blk 93, Toa Payoh Lor 4 is apparently very famous. From what I was told, there would nearly always be a long queue at this stall.
This stall opens at 530pm for business. True enough when we got arrived at 730pm on a Friday, there was a queue of around 12 persons. We queue moved extremely slow. We queued for nearly 35 minutes before it was our turn to order. And by then, some of the more popular items such as pig tongue were sold out!
Kway Chap $11
By the time we collected our food, we were starving! The Kway Chap cost $11 (note that 2 other bowls of kway is not in the above photo).

The bowl of Kway (flat and broad rice sheet) was just average. It was not soaked in the broth long enough an the broth taste more salty than tasty/flavourful.
Braised Pig Intestines (small)
The Braised Pig Intestines (small) were washed so clean that the insides were nearly all washed off and lacked any taste except for the saltiness which came from the braising sauce.
braised egg, tau pok, beancurd, big intestines, fish cakes
As for the rest of ingredients such as the braised egg, tau pok, beancurd and braised pig intestines, they were just average. The fish cake was quite decent.

Needless to say, I am not going to queue so long for this next time.

(CLOSED) Ban Mian 福州板面 (Toa Payoh Central)

*CLOSED*

Dry Pork You Mian $3
I have heard about how awesome the dry Ban Mian located in J99 Eating House at Toa Payoh Central is.
Hence, We made a special trip down to Toa Payoh for this on a Friday evening. The stall name is called Ban Mian 福州板面. It is less than 5 minutes walk away from the Toa Payoh MRT station and HDB Hub.
Needless to say, both of us ordered the Dry Pork You Mian $3. Most Ban Mian stalls are self-service (i.e. customers would need collect their own orders and bring it to their table. Whereas for Ban Mian 福州板面, all we had to do was order and give our table number. The food would be delivered to our table. This was probably because there was a need to wait for a good 15 minutes.
Dry Pork You Mian $3
The Dry Pork You Mian $3 was served with a bowl of soup.
Dry Pork You Mian $3
A generous amount of ingredients (minced pork, vegetables, anchovy (ikan bilis) was given.
Dry Pork You Mian $3
As this was the dry verison, there was dark sauce at the bottom of the bowl. Before eating it, the sauce should be mixed with the noodles till every strand was well coated with the dark sauce. To be frank, this bowl of Dry Pork You Mian was not fantastic. We felt thirsty the entire night.
Pork Ban Mian $3
On another Friday night, we went to try their soup version noodles. We ordered the Pork Ban Mian $3 and Pork You Mian $3.
Pork You Mian $3
The Ban Mian was slightly undercooked while the You Mian was overcooked. These soup version Ban Mian and You Mian were decent but not the best. What is certain is that their soup version fared well better compared to their dry version.

I doubt I will try their dry Ban Mian again. If you are keen to try the dry version, try the one at 161 板面 Ban Mian (Bukit Merah Central). It tasted way better.

Ah Chiang's Porridge 阿昌粥 (Toa Payoh)

Mix Pork Porridge with Egg $4
Ah Chiang's Porridge 阿昌粥 first started operation at at Tiong Poh Road in the 70s selling Cantonese style porridge. Today, it has two outlets; one at Toa Payoh while the other - the original stall is still at Tiong Poh Road.
We visited the outlet at Toa Payoh which is 5 minutes away from Toa Payoh MRT station.
Menu
Mix Pork Porridge with Egg $4
I ordered a bowl of Mix Pork Porridge with Egg $4.
Mix Pork Porridge with Egg $4
It came with minced pork meat, liver and small and big intestines. The servings of pork was very little. Take for example, there was just 1 slice of small and big intestines. I normally add an egg into my bowl of porridge to give it a creamier texture. The porridge was cooked till it was thick and smooth. Taste wise, I was not impressed. It was lacking in taste and flavour.
Century Egg Chicken Porridge $4.50
The partner ordered a bowl of Century Egg Chicken Porridge $4.50. The serving of shredded chicken was limited compared to the century egg.

To sum this up, I was quite disappointed with what I had as I had expected more

Tims Restaurant & Cafe (Toa Payoh)

Tims Restaurant & Cafe a Nepalese restaurant serves Nepalese and Western cuisine. The restaurant reminds me of Jack's Place. But unlike Jack's Place, Tims Restaurant & Cafe is located under a HDB block and is a non air-conditioned restaurant. The restaurant is located 10 minutes walk away from Braddell MRT staiton.
Daily Set Lunch Menu
The prices on its Daily Set Lunch Menu and Ala Carte Menu are all nett prices, which means there are no additional charges such as service charge and GST as these has already been factored in.

The three of us ordered Chicken MoMo $8.50, Spaghetti Bolognaise Set $10 and Fish & Chips Set $11 (Daily Set Lunch), and Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11. The Set Lunch consisted of Soup of the Day, Main Course set, Dessert and Tea/Coffee.
Chicken MoMo $8.50
The Chicken MoMo $8.50 was essentially Nepalese style meat dumplings with coriander, ginger, garlic. It is served together with home made "Nepalese Achar". It was similar to our Chinese cuisine Xiao Long Bao. The difference is that the skin is thicker and there are no broth in the dumplings. The Chicken MoMo was unique. Although I felt that the skin was too thick, the meat fillings inside was wonderfully executed. Dipping the Chicken MoMo into the achar (made of tomatoes, herbs and spices) made it just so addictive!
Minestrone Soup with Garlic Bread
The Soup of the Day was Minestrone Soup. The soup was served with slices of Garlic Bread. Their Garlic Bread fared better than Jack's Place as the garlic spread was thicker.
Minestrone Soup
The Minestrone Soup was filled with lots of ingredients at the bottom of the bowl. Look at the amount of carrots, celery and strands of spaghetti. Unlike other Minestrone soup, this had a unique herbal spice flavour.
Spaghetti Bolognaise Set $10
The Spaghetti Bolognaise Set $10 which my friend ordered. I did not try this. It was quite a big serving.
Fish & Chips Set $11
The Fish & Chips Set $11 may not be the best, but it was decently executed! The plus point would be that it was not oily. In addition, they portion was pretty generous considering the price.
Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11
I ordered the Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11 which consisted of roasted chicken with rice, achar and vegetables.
Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11
I was very impressed with this dish. It was easily the best dish! The chicken was marinated and roasted to perfection. The chicken was meaty and so tender and succulent!
We ended off the meal with a cup of tea (from the set meal) and this cake.

Overall, I was very impressed with Tims Restaurant & Cafe! I am not an expect on whether the food here was authentic or not. But taste wise, I just love it. Price wise, it's so value for money considering the quality and amount of food. I will be back for more!
