Shi Xin Western Food 时新西餐 (Tekka Food Centre)

Chicken Chop with Egg $6.20
Shi Xin Western Food 时新西餐 is a western food hawker stall located at Tekka Food Centre.

Menu
As its name suggests, the stall owner serves Western cuisine such as black pepper beef steak, fish and chips, chicken cutlet, chicken chop and pork chop. 15 varieties in total. The stall is manned by just 1 person, a lady. Not an easy feat considering that preparations are required and she has to juggle between receiving goods, taking orders, cooking and collecting payment. Moreover, this is the only western stall in the hawker centre and business can be quite good during meal times. Amazing how 1 person can handle all these. She must be very capable.
Pork Chop $5.50
This is the Pork Chop $5.50. It is served with fries, bake beans, sliced cucumbers and tomato, and a bun.
Pork Chop $5.50
Personally, the sides were decent. The down side was that the main star, which was the pork chop, was too tough.
Chicken Chop with Egg $6.20
On another occasion, I ordered the Chicken Chop $5.50. I added an egg for an additional $0.70. This fared better in terms of taste. The egg was nicely executed with its yolk still runny. The chicken chop was juicy and well marinated!

I find the price of the western cuisine at this stall very reasonable. Also, all the items come along with a bun.

328 Yi Jia Teochew Fish Porridge.Fish Soup 一家潮州魚粥.魚湯 (Tekka Food Centre)

Pomfret Mee Sua $5
328 Yi Jia Teochew Fish Porridge.Fish Soup 一家潮州魚粥.魚湯 is a fish soup stall located in Tekka Hawker Centre / Food Centre.
You may find the name familiar as it has a similar stall in Maxwell Food Centre.
Menu
As its name suggests, the stall specialises in selling fish soup and porridge.
They offer a variety of fish such as batang fish and pomfret fish, and prawns with porridge, rice or noodles (e.g. bee hoon and mee sua).
Batang Fish
The batang fish (also known Spanish Mackeral) is the most popular food fish in Singapore that most fish stall offers. The sliced of batang fish are all deboned.
Pomfret and Fish Roe
They sell the pomfret fish which is popular among teochews. The pomfret they use is likely to be the Chinese Silver Pomfret 斗鲳. Sometimes, the pomfret gets sold out pretty early at around 1230pm. As you can see in the above photo, they also sell fish roe.
Pomfret Mee Sua $5
This is the Pomfret Mee Sua $5. The freshness of the fish is an essential point. The slices of  fish were smooth and nicely cut with sweet tasting meat. There are several slices with bones though, which not some people will it troublesome and dislike the whole dish.
Fish (Batang) Soup $4
On another occasion, I ordered the Fish (Batang) Soup $4 with rice of course. Similarly, the fish slices were smooth and fresh.

During both occasion, I thought that the soup was clear but too bland. The essence of the fish was not extracted. This stall offers many condiments including salted beans (a favourite among teochews), shredded ginger, raw garlic and the usual chilli padi with light soy sauce. This is a huge plus point for me as I love adding salted beans into my chilli padi with light soy sauce. This is the way how teochew love to savour their fish (pl do not judge me).  =)

Chin Seng Cooked Food (Tekka Centre)

Wanton Noodles $3
Chin Seng Cooked Food is a noodles stall located at Tekka Market and Food Centre run by an elderly couple.
The stall owners make the Char Siew themselves each morning. The lady owner explained that making the Char Siew themselves is nicer compared to buying it (outside). Although their opening hours is from 7am to 3pm daily, they have to come before 5am to prepare. And after closing, they would also need to wash the dishes, clean the stall and prepare for the next day. Sometimes they have to stay till as late as 5pm. It is literally a 12 hours job. Despite that, they do not have any rest day as they need to earn a living.
This is also partly the reason why, you would see them wrapping wanton / dumplings whenever they have any free time.
Wanton Noodles $3
For just $3, this plate of Wanton Noodles (mee) is value for money. It came with lots of noodles, char siew, vegetables and a bowl of wanton soup.
Wanton Noodles $3
Lot at the amount of carbo (noodles) give. The noodles was not overcooked and there was lots of sauce underneath it. The char siew which they made themselves was delicious. It was not dry and had a good balance of lean meat and fats.
Wanton Noodles $3
There were five pieces of wanton given. The wantons were delicious. They were so generous with the meat  fillings and seasoned it well.
Dumpling Noodles $3 (with Char Siew $0.50)
On another occasion, I ordered the Dumpling Noodles $3 and topped up $0.50 for their char siew.
Dumpling Noodles $3 (with Char Siew $0.50)
The char siew which they made themselves was so delicious. I love the charred bits at the exterior!
Dumpling Noodles $3 (with Char Siew $0.50)
Four pieces of dumplings was given. These were big and delicious! They have probably added pieces of chestnuts into it to give it a crunchy bite.
Chicken Chop Noodles $3
I also tried their Chicken Chop Noodles $3. The chicken is fried just before serving. In bite sizes, children will love this!

I can forsee myself coming back for more wanton noodles and dumpling noodles! The food here is cheap and good!

545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles (Tekka Centre)

Prawn Noodles (dry) $3
545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles is a prawn noodles stall located at Tekka Centre operated by a young hawker; Ruifang and her parents. Those who find the stall name familiar (or notice a familar face), it is because Ruifang's father used to operate a prawn noodle stall with the same name at Blk 91 Whampoa Drive Market.
It is heartening to know that this stall is operated by a family (team), just like the good old days. The turnover is pretty fast, so do not be surprised if there's no queue or the queue moves quickly during lunch hours. As the recipe was passed down by Rui Fang's grandfather, this is a old school style prawn noodles stall.
Only dry and wet versions of prawn noodles are available.
Prawn Noodles (dry) $3
I ordered the Prawn Noodles (dry) $3.
Prawn Noodles (dry) $3
Personally, I prefer their dry version compared to the soup version. The soup was rich and robust in flavour (not diluted), but there was just an aftertaste that did not resonate well with my taste buds.
Prawn Noodles (dry) $3
The dry version came with bean sprouts, lean meat, prawns and noodles with chilli sambal and ketchup sauce, topped with fried shallots was delicious. Their sauce complemented really well with the noodles. In addition, even the little details such as fried shallots was excellent. The shallots were so crisp and fresh, love it! At $3 this is so value for money!

If you are a fan of this stall, you should follow their facebook page appended below. The page is frequently update on closures and when blue-tail Sua Lor prawns are available.

Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice 兴记鸡 鸭饭 (Tekka Centre)

Braised Duck Meat, Duck Feet and Gizzard with Rice $5
Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice 兴记鸡 鸭饭 located at Tekka Centre has been in business for more than 60 years. It is now operated by the original owner's disciples. The original owner of this stall no longer runs the business at this stall and started a stall called Ah Heng Duck Rice 同濟前阿興鴨飯 at Hong Lim Food Centre.
During lunch time you can expect a long queue at this stall. Service is fast though.
The stall sells braised duck (meat, wings, feet), organs, pork belly, pig ears, pig head meat, bean curd (tau kwa) and egg. You will notice that most of their customers are generally older in age partly because of the food offerings that are being sold. They no longer sell goose meat.
Braised Duck Meat, Duck Feet and Egg with Rice
This plate of Braised Duck Meat, Duck Feet and Egg with Rice cost either $4.50 or $5 (my memory is failing me sigh..). The white rice is drizzled with the braising sauce (lor).

The braised duck meat, feet and egg are plated on top of the braised sauce.
Braised Duck Meat, Duck Feet and Gizzard with Rice $5
On another occasion I ordered Braised Duck Meat, Duck Feet and Gizzard with Rice which cost $5.
Braised Duck Meat, Duck Feet and Gizzard with Rice $5
Look at how meaty and thick the duck meat are. Definitely not layered! In addition, they are so generous with the serving of duck meat. The duck feet could have been braised longer so that they are softer. As for the braising sauce, although it was fragrant, it was a tad too salty. I felt very thirsty towards the end of the meal on both occasion.

Nevertheless, this is stall worth checking out! The prices here are very reasonable.

ps: They normally take order and sell braised duck (whole) for Chinese New Year period. This year, they are no longer taking orders and selling the braised duck during this period.

Cocotte at Wanderlust Hotel (Little India)

Cocotte a 2 year old French restaurant located at the lobby of Wanderlust Hotel, is located in between Bugis and Little India MRT stations along 2 Dickson Road. I took about 15 minutes to walk over from Bugis MRT station cutting through Rochor Centre.
Wanderlust Hotel

The restaurant managed by Head Chef Anthony Yeoh was recently named as one of the top 500 restaurants in the 2013 edition of the Miele Guide.
Cocotte had a unique environment. An assortment of chairs with different colours and rustic timbre tables of brown and white colour. It gave a bight cheerful and country style ambience.
Pastry Counter
Cocotte has recently opened a Pastry Counter and will be serving Brunch everyday. The Pastry Counter will be opened from Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 10pm and on Sunday from 12pm to 3pm.
Pastry Menu
The Pastry Counter offers a wide variety of choices with its prices displayed clearly next to it.
Our table dining table, I like the brown timbre table.
Shredded Pork Confit $15
Shredded Pork Confit $15
The Shredded Pork Confit Sandwich - Confited Free Range Australian Pork Shoulder, Wholegrain Mustard Dressing, Fresh Tarragon, Parsley & Cucumber with Toasted Country Baguette. The filling in the sandwich were delicious. However, the downside was that the toasted country baguette was too hard compared to the tender soft fillings. The shredded pork confit deserved a special mentioned. Coming from the pork shoulder, it was tasty, moist and incredibly soft and tender. In addition, the cucumber provided a nice crunch.
French Onion "Soup" Sandwich $10
French Onion "Soup" Sandwich $10
The French inspired French Onion "Soup" Sandwich blew me away. It consisted of Caramelised Onion Confit, Melted Gruyere Cheese, Thyme Leaves and Toasted Country Baguette. Instead of a soup, you get the dry version which is probably grilled with gruyere cheese on top so that it melts. I believe that gruyere cheese was used not only because it is 'the' cheese which is traditionally used in French Onion Soup but also because of its rich, creamy, slightly smokey and nutty taste. If you are a fan of French Onion Soup, you have got to try this!
Grilled Boneless Chicken Leg With Fresh Herb & Garlic Butter $12
Grilled Boneless Chicken Leg With Fresh Herb & Garlic Butter $12
The Grilled Boneless Chicken Leg was served with Garlic Roasted Potatoes and French Beans. As the whole the dish was well executed. The boneless chicken leg was grilled perfectly. Crisp cracking chicken skin with juicy tender meat. The partner and I also particularly like the roasted potato. At $12, it is cheaper in price than most of restaurants and I would consider this quite value for money considering the quality!
Left to right: Chocolate Tart, Pistachio Creme Brulee, Nectarine Tart, Citron Lemon Tart
For desserts, we tried the Chocolate Tart, Pistachio Creme Brulee, Nectarine Tart and Citron Lemon Tart.

The Citron Lemon Tart was their best seller. On the first bite, it had a tangy sour taste that was too strong for my liking. The main reason was because this was made from lemon. However, I started to like it from the second bite downwards  It is a light dessert and is the type that the more you dig into it, the more you will like it. Among the four, this was our favourite. This is best accompanied by a cup of hot tea!

The Chocolate Tart was made of 72% Valrhona - dark chocolate. Chocolate fans will love as it is made of intense thick dark chocolate; not diluted. The bitterness of the chocolate is followed by a slight hint of sweetness. Best to share this!

Overall, I enjoyed the dining ambience at Cocotte. Quiet and cozy, Cocotte is a good place for a chat among friends or for a date. Foodwise, the quality of food was top notch. I am still thinking (craving) of the French Onion "Soup" Sandwich.

Thank you Grace for the invite.
