Seng Huat Prawn Noodles 成發 (Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre)

Prawn Noodles $3
Seng Huat Prawn Noodles 成發 is probably the most popular stall at Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre judging from the queue whenever it is open. As age is catching up with the owner of the stall, the stall is now closed 3 days a week instead of 2 days. Whenever the stall is open, Sat to Mon, there is a queue at the stall.
I visited the stall during weekday lunch time. There was a queue of around 7 persons in front of me. It was around 20 minutes of waiting time. Interestingly, I noticed that the signage of the stall indicates that it sold fishball noodles too. But everyone was ordering prawn noodles!
Prawn Noodles $3
I ordered the $3.00 prawn noodles, dry with chilli. I was impressed by the generous serving of ingredients given for the price. The prawns were sliced into half and deshell except for the tail end. Moreover, the prawns were deveined! Most other stalls do not bother to do this as it is tedious.
Prawn Noodles $3
The prawns were fresh, firm and easy to savour as it was deshelled. Also the sambal chilli sauce was delicious! It was so fragrant and addictive that it reminded me of Fishball Story’s chilli sauce! I can eat the noodles with the chilli sauce all day!

Having tried the prawn noodles, I now know why it has been so highly raved about! Give it a try before the owners retire!

Quan Ann Prawn Mee 全安虾面 (Shunfu Food Centre)

Quan Ann Prawn Mee 全安虾面 is an old school, no frills stall located at Shunfu Food Centre.
It reminds me of the school canteen stalls in the good old days. The menu and price is simple and clearly stated with only one dish offered. There are no fanciful or glamorous menu signage.

I ordered the dry version Prawn Noodles $3 with chilli. Although the broth and prawns hit the right notes, I felt that the chilli was lacking in terms of fragrance as it was just spicy with no hint of sambal fragrance in it. The prawns were fresh as they were firm and sweet. As for the broth which was cooked with pork and prawns, it was tasty with a subtle umami flavour.

While this bowl of prawn noodles may not be at the forefront among the best prawn noodle stalls, it is worth a try, if you are looking for one which is old school with resemblance to home cooked food. I suspect that it would be more appreciated by the older generation, as the younger generation may not like this, as they may fancy the likes of Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle more (big prawns, robust soup).

Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru) 2nd post

Curry Prawn in Indonesia Style 印尼虾 RM 30
Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 is a well known Chinese restaurant offering delicious food at affordable prices. It has several signature dishes, it's most famous signature dish is the Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken.

Teck Sing competitor is just next door (at the left of the restaurant) called Bamboo Restaurant which also specialises in serving paper wrapped chicken. Years ago, Bamboo Restaurant's version was more popular. However over the years, the standard has dropped. Currently, Teck Sing's paper wrapped chicken is more popular among the locals and Singaporeans.
Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡  RM 26
Teck Sing's signature Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 aka Yao Cai Ji now cost RM 26. It used to cost just RM18 four years ago! The eatery uses kampung chicken which is wrapped in  a few pieces of thick superior paper and baked for several hours with various Chinese herbs. The chicken was incredibly fresh, soft, tender and juicy. It was so fork tender; the flesh fell part from the bones easily. So delicious and delectable! One of the best Yao Cai Ji I have ever had. A must order!
Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli RM10
The Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli  RM10 was very well executed. It was well-cooked and the Kang Kong was still crunchy. The Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli strangely was more sweet than spicy with the fragrance of garlic and shrimp. Despite that, this dish was so savoury and delicious that we polish it off within minutes. This is a common dish that is available at most eateries and yet Teck Sing has proven that their cooking technique is still one of the best.
Curry Prawn in Indonesia Style 印尼虾 RM 30
Another dish that we tried was the Curry Prawn in Indonesia Style 印尼虾 RM 30. Cooked in a claypot, it arrived pipping hot with several huge prawns in curry broth! The prawns were fresh as they were easy to deshell. Moreover, the meat was firm, succulent and sweet. The curry broth was spicy, fragrant and milky. It is best accompanied with plain rice!

Kok Sen Restaurant 国成餐室 (Keong Saik Road)

Big Prawn Bee Hoon Soup
Kok Sen Restaurant 国成餐室 is a popular cantonese zi char eatery located at Keong Saik Road. It is around 10 minutes walk away from Outram MRT station. Despite not being air-conditioned, the eatery is nearly always full during lunch and dinner time. Over the years, the eatery has garnered quite a following and is known as one of the best cantonese eatery in Singapore.
Big Prawn Bee Hoon Soup
The Big Prawn Bee Hoon Soup is one of their signature dish. It consists of thick bee hoon, kai lan and large prawns in soup, topped with fried onions (shallots). The large and meaty prawns were sliced in half making it easy to extract the meat. The soup broth was just so robust and tasty! It was red, slightly spicy and full of shrimp flavour. It was so tasty that we drank nearly all the soup! Overall, this dish was delicious! A must try! No wonder one can spot this dish on early every table at the eatery.
Big Prawn Hor Fun
The next signature dish which can also be spotted on nearly every table is the Big Prawn Hor Fun. The dish consists of flat rice vermicelli noodles, kai-lan and large prawns. Similarly, the large prawns were sliced in half. The vermicelli noodles was very well fried with a smokey fragrance and wok hei. The sauce was just out of the world. A bowl of plain rice accompanied with the sauce would suffice! This is a must try too!
Prawn Paste Chicken
The Prawn Paste Chicken is another signature dish at Kok Sen. Interestingly, unlike most places where the prawn paste chicken consist of chicken wings, at Kok Sen, other chicken parts were used. The chef controlled the heat well as the chicken was not greasy. While the flavour of the prawn was evident, it thought that as a whole it was on the salty end.

This is my second time back at Kok Sen Restaurant. Their signature Big Prawn Bee Hoon Soup and  Big Prawn Hor Fun are fantastic! These two dishes are a must try. But do note that you may expect long waiting times at times and not-so-fantastic service. But the food would make up for it.

River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles 河南肉骨大虾面 (Macpherson)

Abalone Clams & Big Prawn Noodles $5.50
I have heard about River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles 河南肉骨大虾面 for sometime but have not tried it as I seldom pass by this area of Singapore.
River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles as its name suggest specialises in prawn noodles. It is so popular and famous that it owns the entire coffeeshop and in fact is the only stall in that coffeeshop (other than the drink stall). This reminds me of the famous Bak Chor Mee (minced meat noodles); Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle which also owns the entire coffeeshop.
They offer a wide range of prawn noodles (normal prawns or big prawns) with the option to add abalone clams, intestines, pig tails or baby abalone.
Abalone Clams & Big Prawn Noodles $5.50
I visited on a weekday at around 2.30 pm. I wanted to order their Intestines & Big Prawn Noodles but it was sold out. Hence, I ordered the Abalone Clams & Big Prawn Noodles $5.50 instead.

I ordered the dry version which was served with a bowl of soup. The chilli sauce was decent. What stood out was the freshness of the prawns. Although there were not very big, the prawns were extremely fresh and sweet in taste. Also, the prawns were deshelled, except for the head and tail.

The bowl of soup also stood out. It was yummlicious! In terms of appearance, it was slightly cloudy and light brown in colour. Taste wise, it was robust and tasty; full of umami flavour. It is one of the best prawn soup I have had. Unfortunately, there is a charge of $1 for refill of soup. Else, I would probably have refilled the soup several times.

Now I understand why the prawn noodles at River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles has been so highly raved about!

The Old Stall Famous Hokkien Prawn Noodles 第四代福建虾面 (Alexandra Village Food Centre)

Pork Ribs Noodle with Prawns $5
You may have heard of The Old Stall Famous Hokkien Prawn Noodles 第四代福建虾面  as it has been in operation since 1943 where it was located along Hokkien Street. Today, it can be found in at least 2 hawker centres (i.e. Hong Lim Food Centre and Alexandra Village Food Centre).
As the stall name suggests, it specialises in serving prawn noodles.
Pork Ribs Noodle with Prawns $5
Pork Ribs Noodle with Prawns (dry with chilli) $5 served with kangkong, beansprouts, pork ribs, prawns and pork lard, was sprinkled with their popular chilli powder. The dish was ordinary with nothing much to shout about except for the chilli powder. The seasoning base for the noodles was disappointing. The soup which they claimed that no MSG was added was tasty and full of umami flavour.

Their chilli powder was so popular because they fried their chilli powder with dried prawns (Hae Bee) which gave it a distinctive fragrance. They retail the chilli powder in small tubs at $4.

Hock Prawn Mee 福鰕面 (Jalan Besar)

Pork Rib Prawn Noodle $5
Hock Prawn Mee 福鰕面 is a prawn noodle stall located at a quiet coffeeshop in Jalan Besar area, oppsite Sim Lim Tower, near Sim Lim Square. It is located just opposite Wanderlust Hotel.

This prawn mee is located in the same coffeeshop as the Hainan Chicken Rice Ball.
I was surprised that Hock Prawn Mee is open 24 hours.
It was manned by an elderly lady and a gentleman in his 40s-50s during the day time when I went on several occasions. The elderly lady was in charge of cooking the food (including the soup stock) while the gentleman was in charge of taking down orders, serving and collection of payment.
Intestine Prawn Noodle $5
Seeing that they offer pig small intestines, I ordered the Intestine Prawn Noodle which cost $5. I was surprised that the price of the prawn noodles at this coffeeshop start from $4 onwards. Was expecting more of $3 or $3.50.
Intestine Prawn Noodle $5
The small intestine was delicious. It was very well cleaned with its innards still intact inside. regretted ordering the dry version as the chilli sauce was disappointing. It lacked fragrance and was not spicy. The soup provided was yummy though! It was very tasty.
Pork Rib Prawn Noodle $5
On the subsequent visit, I ordered the soup version of the Pork Rib Prawn Noodle $5. This was delicious as the soup base was very well done and full of umami flavour. In addition, the pork rib was tender.

Personally, I prefer their soup version. Their dry version was disappointing due to the chilli. Pricewise, it is on the higher end compared to its peers in coffeeshops and hawker centres.

Restoran Todak (Orang Asli) (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

 Prawns cooked in Indonesian Curry
Restoran Todak (Orang Asli) is a well known kelong seafood restaurant located in Johor Bahru. Although this restaurant is located around 30 minutes drive away from the checkpoint, it is popular among Singaporeans. At the car park which is unmarked, you are likely to see more Singapore registered cars compared to Malaysia vehicles.
Restoran Todak is unique as the whole restaurant located along the coast on kelong stilts.

The restaurant is located directly opposite Singapore's Sembawang Coast and provides a picturesque view. As you can see from the photo above, those cranes in the background are from Sembanwang shipyard.
Although the restaurant has indoor seats, most of the tables and chairs are located outside (without a roof) - alfresco style dining with the sea breeze. We arrived early for dinner as we were aware that the restaurant would be packed and some of the seafood would be sold out if we arrive late.

The live seafood are displayed with the prices indicated. For their crabs, they have different pricing depending on the prices. The cheaper ones typically get sold out before 730 pm. The you will need to wait and see if new stock comes in in the next couple of hours or order a more expensive crab.
We used the big menu (above) and ordered our food based on the recommendation of the type of cooking style for the food.
 Prawns cooked in Indonesian Curry
The Prawns cooked in Indonesian Curry were delicious! The prawns of different sizes were relatively big and very fresh; succulent and sweet tasting meat!
Fried Buns (Man Tou)
We ordered fried buns (man tous) which complemented perfectly with the Indonesian Curry gravy.
 Salted Egg Crab
The Salted Egg Crab was unique. I was expecting this to come with sauce and was surprised when it was a 'dry' dish. Taste wise, there was just a slight hint of salted egg flavour. Initially, we thought that the wrong order was delivered to us as this tasted more like fried garlic crab! I was not too impressed with the taste. But the saving grace was that the crab was so fresh! The meat could be easily extracted from the shell and was so tender.
Japanese Snail (Japanese Escargot 日本螺) Gong Bao 宫保Style
The Japanese Snail (Japanese Escargot 日本螺) was cooked Gong Bao 宫保style. This dish was very well executed. The Japanese snail had a smooth texture and was springy! The Gong Bao style complement the Japanese Snail quite well. If the sauce was slightly more spicy, it would be more ideal!
Egg Omelette (Fu Rong Egg 芙蓉蛋)
Egg Omelette was fluffy and addictive - very well executed.
Butter Crayfish
Had great expectations for the Butter Crayfish. But it disappointed in terms of presentation and taste. I was expecting a more buttery flaovour that would make this addictive.
Lala
The Lala too was just 'meh' disappointing. The Lala were not meaty and plump enough. This is definitely not the best lala; is average.
Sweet Potato Leaves with Belacan
The Sweet Potato Leaves with Belacan was well fried. Cooked and tasted just right. It complemented the plain rice extremely well.
Complimentary Fruits
After each meal, every table would be served with a plate of Complimentary Fruits.
Receipt
The total cost of our meal. Relatively cheap after converting to Singapore dollars considering this meal fed five persons.

This restaurant is definitely worth coming back to. I saw several tables ordering their fish and oysters. The oysters were huge! The downside is the distance from the causeway; you would probably need a vehicle.

Datouxia (Da Tou Xia 大頭蝦 Prawn Noodles)

*Edited on 21 Sep 2014. Closed*
Super Prawn Noodles (dry) $10.80
Datouxia (Da Tou Xia 大頭蝦 Prawn Noodles) opened recently, less than 2 months ago specialises in Prawn Noodles and Ngoh Hiang.
The non-air conditioned eatery, located just outside a bus stop has a large seating capacity. When I visited on a Friday evening, the restaurant was empty except for another couple (probably in their 50s).
The menu with their prices indicated are nett prices. They sell a variety of prawn noodles (including jumbo prawns), pork ribs, pig tails and even abalone noodles.
They also have a separate menu for Ngoh Hiang (variety of fried Chinese food).
Super Prawn Noodles (dry) $10.80
I ordered the Super Prawn Noodles (dry) $10.80 and a Golden Wing(s) $0.90.

Surprisingly, the Super Prawn Noodles (dry) was served with pig tails which was weird since I did not request for that and its not indicated in the menu for such an order. Nevertheless, I went ahead and try this bowl of Super Prawn Noodles.
Super Prawn Noodles (dry) $10.80
There was three jumbo prawns sliced into halves which made it easier to savour the prawns. The jumbo prawns did not disappoint. Big in size, they were so fresh and its meat was firm and sweet. Prawn lovers would love this. Chilli, fried shallots and pork lard were mixed with the noodles and beansprouts. The chilli was very spicy, you may wish to ask for less chilli.

As for the soup, it was tasty and robust, full of essence of the prawns. However, I felt thirsty after drinking the bowl of soup.
Golden Wing(s) $0.90
I spotted the Golden Wing(s) $0.90 in the Ngoh Hiang menu and decided to order one to try. As I order this, the staff informed me that they had only one piece left as he was probably worried that I would order more than one. The Golden Wing, did not impress me. It was over fried and the interior was dry.
As shown in the above receipt, the prices indicated in the menus are in nett.
