Fat Papas (Northpoint City)

Wimpy Beef Burger $15 + upgrade to Beef Chilli Cheese Fries $2
You may probably be thinking of Fat Boys when you read the post title "Fat Papas". Well, this is quite normal. Fat Papas is in a way related to Fat Boys. In fact, it is the Halal version of Fat Boys.
If you are wondering why Fat Papas logo is so familiar, well, you are not alone too. The logo looks like Sheikh Haikel right? Well, it is Sheikh Haikel, the popular Singporean rapper and comedian! He is the one who pitched the idea of a Halal version of Fat Boys to the Bernice Tay, the owner of Fat Boys, who agreed in the joint venture after seven years, as certain recipes had to be tweaked.

Menu
Fat Papas' offer a variety of burgers, beef ribs, steaks, pastas and milkshakes. You can even build you own burger (BYOB)!
Wimpy Beef Burger $15 + upgrade to Beef Chilli Cheese Fries $2
We ordered Fat Boy's signature dish, Wimpy Beef Burger $15 which consisted of beef patty, turkey bacon, fried egg, melted aged cheddar cheese and bbq sauce on a sesame seed bun. The burger was quite delicious. The beef patty itself was soft, moist and tender, and did not fall apart apart easily. Also, the turkey bacon was not hard and salty.

We also topped up $2 to upgrade our fries to Beef Chilli Cheese Fries. The only issue I had with this was that the amount of sauce should have covered all the fries as it complemented the fries so well and made them so addictive!
Country Fried Steak $19.80
One cannot walk away from Fat Papas without trying the Country Fried Steak $19.80. It is Sheikh Haikel's favourite dish at Fat Boys.

The Country Fried Steak consisted of a piece of thin breaded steak coated with cheese bechamel sauce and served on a bed of whipped potato. Though the fried steak was thin, it was huge and so crisp. This dish is best shared among at least two persons. The fried steak though decently executed would have been quite ordinary if not for the cheese bechamel sauce. This is a must try!

Charly T's (112 Katong)

Charly T's second outlet is located at 112 Katong. It's first outlet is located at Nomu Building (next to The Cathay). At Charly T's, customer first order at the counter before entering the restaurant to choose their seats. Their orders will be served to them directly when it is ready.

It has a unique concept as cuisines from different countries are put together and served at this restaurant. Essentially, your food journey can bring you from Europe to America to Asia (without the need to board a plane)!

Part of the wall in Charly T's showcase the drawings done by different children who have been to Charly T's. The restaurant will provide the colouring pencil and paper for children. Talk about family/kids friendly restaurant. This will keep the children busy while parents savour the food (peacefully).
Charly T's also have a Peranakan theme private room for six
Furthermore, there is an al fresco lounge area outside. Perfect for drinking, watching soccer matches and/or enjoying the view.
Charly T's Odysseys - Green Flash $6.50
Kick started the meal with Charly T's Odysseys - Green Flash; mix of green apple, orange and pineapple. Refreshing fruity thirst-quencher.
Rotisserie Chicken Original Recipe ($13 for quarter chicken + 2 additions, $24 for half chicken + 3 additions, $42 for whole chicken + 4 additions)
The signature Rotisserie Chicken (original recipe) was marinated for over 13 hours before being slow-cooked rotisserie-style.  It did not disappoint. Marinated with herbs and spices, the exterior was crisp while the interior was juicy and tender. Yummlicious.

When ordering, you can request for your favourite chicken part.
Rotisserie Chicken Kansas City BBQ ($15 for quarter chicken + 2 additions, $27 for half chicken + 3 additions, $46 for whole chicken + 4 additions
Rotisserie Chicken Black Pepper ($15 for quarter chicken + 2 additions, $27 for half chicken + 3 additions, $46 for whole chicken + 4 additions
The Rotisserie Chicken Kansas City BBQ was my favourite. Executed slightly different from the original recipe and black pepper, it was well marinated. It was more flavourful and tasty. In addition, the thigh meat was so soft, tender and juicy that I had to go for second serving to satisfy my palate.
(Left to right):  Kansas City BBQ  Sauce, Creamy Roasted Sesame Sauce, Chermoula Sauce, Charly T's Original Sauce
Four different type of sauces to complement the Rotisserie Chicken. (I did not see a need for the sauces, as I like the original flavour (marination) of the chicken)
Clockwise from top left: Macaroni & Cheese, German Potato Salad, Fresh Vegetables, Butter Garlic Rice
Four additions (sides) available when you order the Rotisserie Chicken; namely Macaroni & Cheese, German Potato Salad, Fresh Vegetables and Butter Garlic Rice
Macaroni & Cheese
My favourite was the Macaroni & Cheese (it was tough choosing between German Potato Salad and this). You will either hate this or love this. To me, this was superbly executed. This uses a recipe from award-winning Chef Rozanne Gold's 'Eat Fresh Food' cookbook. It contains less cheese and includes fresh cauliflower.
Kalua Pork $16
Kalua Pork $16
A popular Hawaiian (Honolulu) dish, the Kalua Pork was marinated and slow-cooked for 48 hours! The top layer of fats and skin have been removed, leaving just the lean meat behind. It was so soft and tender that the meat could be easily pulled apart. If you prefer a healthier choice compared to Chinese-style pork belly, this is a good alternative as you can indulge guilt-free.
Jumbo Schnitzel Burger $14
An Austrian German dish, the Jumbo Schnitzel Burger consists of  a big piece of deep fried chicken cutlet and slices of bacon sandwiched by 2 buns served with fries. The chicken was coated with bread crumbs and deep fried till golden brown. It was incredibly crispy on the outside yet tender and moist on the inside. The fries deserve a mention too. Lightly salted, the fries were crispy on the outside and soft, fluffy on the inside. Exactly the way I like my fries to be. (I am sure this is a kid's favourite!  fried chicken and fries!)
CT's Beef Burger $10.50
CT's Beef Burger $10.50
CT's Beef Burger served with nachos. The beef patty was thick, meaty and tasty. However, it was on the a tad too chewy and dry.

I was impressed that Charly T's fried the bottom of each of the 2 buns before serving. Despite being full, (the usual practice will be just to skip having the bun) I found myself savouring the buns as on the bottom, it was crisp yet at the top it was soft (the little things that matters).
Kaiserchmarrn $14
Kaiserchmarrn $14 - Pancake
Kaiserchmarrn $14 - Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
Talk about ending the meal with a bang. The Austrian German dessert;  Kaiserschmarrn totally blew me off. Shredded warm, fluffy caramelised pancake dusted with powder sugar and raisins complemented perfectly with the Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. The hot and cold combination along with the raisin and powder sugar were such a perfect match that I found myself indulging endlessly despite being full. A must order (tip: get the piece with the most powder sugar and pair it with the raisins and ice cream)

Thank you Janice (FoodNews) for invite and hosting.

Everything With Fries (Bugis Junction)

Cheese Burger with Garlic & Herbs (Straight Cut) $11.90

Everything With Fries (EWF) is started by the owners of Awfully Chocolate. It is a burger joint where the use of fresh ingredients is emphasis.

Recently, EWF has opened a new outlet at Bugis Junction. It is located at level 4, directly opposite Shaw Cinema next to the escalator.

Open concept with modern decoration.
Menu
Mains Menu
All mains are served with your choice of Fries and a Caesar Salad.
Fries Menu
5 different flavours of fries along with different cut;Shoestring Cut (skinny fries) or Straight Cut (thick fries) to choose from.

I visited EWF with 3 others on 14Feb 2012. Yes, Valentines's Day. Well, it is a working day and we had to eat lunch. We arrived at around 1220pm and were informed by the staff who gave us the menu that they ran out of salad.

We placed our order and started noticing, more people entering. It was obvious that the staff and kitchen could not cope with the crowd.

After waiting for more than half an hour minutes, we requested for fries to be served first as we were starving. (by the way, the serving staff informed us that normally the food will be served within 15 minutes)
Cheese Burger with Garlic & Herbs (Straight Cut) $11.90
How long more did we wait, I do not know. My food was the first to be served. As for the rest, theirs were served between 5 to 20 minutes later).

We were pleasantly surprised when we saw the salad. As earlier we were told that they ran out of salad. If you noticed, in the picture, a whole garlic was given! Well..I ordered the Garlic & Herbs Fries (Straight Cut).
Cheese Burger
The Cheese Burger consists of beef patty, topped with cheddar and stewed tomato concasse. The beef patty was soft but too dry. On a positive note, it does not taste like frozen processed beef patty. (by the way
EWF claims that everything is made freshly) The cheddar and tomato concasse complemented the flavour of this burger well.

What is concasse? Concasse is the process of coarsely chopping a vegetable. For tomoato concasse, the tomato will need to be peeled, seeded before chopping.  After which you can season it with salt and pepper to taste and use for e.g. as a sauce or for omelette.

The food is ok. The only issue I have with EWF is their ridiculously slow service. Even when I made payment, I gave my credit card to the staff. The staff took it without checking, coming back 5 minutes later to tell me they do not accept that credit card and asked for a new one. This could have been prevented if they know what is accepted, what is not (American Express, Visa, Mastercard?..)

A few days after my visit, I happened to see someone posted a picture of EWF at Bugis on facebook, I enquired on their service and I got the same feedback. Benefit of doubt: maybe their kitchen staff and service staff are new considering they just opened. (but again, that only shows clearly the lack of training) They should rectify this problem fast as it will not do any good to their reputation.

Starliner Diner at Tomorrowland (Hong Kong Disneyland)

As mentioned in my previous post, we had lunch at Comet Cafe. For dinner, again we wanted a meal which would not take up too much time. Hence, we went to Starliner Diner at Tomorrowland. Starliner Diner with a seating capacity of 800 is the largest service restaurant in Disneyland. The interior and exterior of the Starliner Diner are decorated to give patrons a spaceport dining experience.
Menu (a)

Menu (b)
All Combo/Set are served with French Fries or Chicken Flavoured Rice along with a regular cup of Soft Drinks/Lemon Tea/Hot Chocolate/Hot Tea/Hot Coffee.
This reminds me of fast food joint. There was a short queue when ordering. But once you order, the items you order will be immediately served to you as everything is prepared.Similar concept to fast food restaurants.
Beef Burger with Cheese Combo
Beef Burger with Cheese
Beef Burger with Cheese Combo HK$70 (S$11.66) with French Fries and Hot Tea. Surprisingly, the food (french fries and burger) was still hot as if it was just cooked when it was clearly cooked before hand and placed at the counter outside the kitchen. Well, my guess is the turnover is too fast.

The French Fries with slightly thicker cut compare to Mcdonalds. It was slightly on the salty end. The Beef patty in the Beef Burger was soft, tender and juicy. Delicious! Ordering hot tea was a plus as I could refilled more hot water into it and keep myself warm during the cold weather.
Chicken Teriyaki Burger Combo
Chicken Teriyaki Burger
Chicken Teriyaki Burger Combo HK$70 (S$11.66) with French Fries and Hot Chocolate. The Chicken in the Chicken Teriyaki Burger was tender. Felt that too much teriyaki sauce was added as the sauce was dripping all over. Other than that, it was quite a nice burger.

In terms of price, it is of course more expensive as we are in Disneyland. But this meal was so much better than our lunch and certainty more value for money. Moreover, the other nmore upscale restaurants had long queues. Whereas at Starliner Diner with 800 seats, there's no need to wait. We made the right choice =)

Hence, if you are wondering what to eat in Hong Kong Disneyland, hopefully these two posts will help.
