Song Fa Bak Kut Teh 松發肉骨茶 (New Bridge Road)

Song Fa Bak Kut Teh 松發肉骨茶 has been serving Teochew style Bak Kut Teh (pork ribs soup) to its customers since 1969. Today, they have 3 outlets. Two of which are located a few units away from each other along New Bridge Road, directly opposite Clarke Quay MRT station.
Upon stepping into Song Fa Bak Kut Teh, I could feel a sense of nostalgic with its wooden ceiling, stools and tables that were used in the past and also the decoration with black and white photos of the olden days. What was most pleasant was that it was neat, clean and air-conditioned.

Bak Kut Teh was invented by Chinese immigrants in Malaya in the 19th century. In those days, the immigrants were manual workers who were poor. As their job require lots of energy, they had to find ways to boost their energy. As such, they used cheap pork ribs and herbs like coriander, cloves, star anise and pepper to cook soup. Besides being able to drink the nutritious soup, they were also able to enjoy the meat on ribs. Satisfying their hunger pangs and the need to replenish their energy. As a result, the Teochew style Bak Kut Teh  (as what we know today) unlike the Klang version is peppery and clear. Personally, I prefer the Teochew Style Bak Kut Teh (I am a Teochew).
Menu
They offer several many other dishes such as Pork Liver Soup, Pork Stomach Soup as well as Braised Pig Trotter to complement the peppery Bak Kut Teh as shown in the Menu above.

Pork Ribs Soup $6.50, Rice $0.60, You Tiao (油条) $1
I ordered the Pork Ribs Soup (Bak Kut Teh) along with a bowl of rice and You Tiao.
Pork Ribs Soup $6.50
Three pieces of pork ribs was served in the Pork Ribs Soup (Bak Kut Teh). The meat on the pork rib was quite tough; not as tender as I hope it would be. Fortunately, the soup saved the day. Clear, tasty and peppery. Full  garlic and star anise flavour, so aromatic. The soup was refillable and I refilled it three times in total!
You Tiao (油条) $1
I could not resist ordering the You Tiao (油条) aka Dough Fritters to go along with the Bak Kut Teh. The best way to savour this is to dip it into the soup to allow it to soak up all the soup. Shiok!

Overall, a decent bowl of Bak Kut Teh. Certainly not the best. In terms of price, it was affordable considering that the place was air conditioned and there was no service charge (the service in terms of ordering, serving, refilling of soup was prompt and efficient).

Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh 梁记(巴生)肉骨茶 (Beach Road)

Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh is located along Beach Road. Whenever I walk pass the place, the place is always bursting with customers. I decided to try it for myself on a weekday lunch.

Menu
I ordered the Bak Kut Teh (Ribs) with a bowl of Rice. As the place was very crowded, I waited for more than 20 minutes before my order was served.
Bak Kut Teh (Ribs) $5.50 with Rice $0.50
Bak Kut Teh (Ribs) $5.50
This bowl of Bak Kut Teh soup is very different from the peppery version. The Bak Kut Teh soup was  thick, cloudy with a bitterish herbal taste. Personally, I prefer the peppery version with hints of garlic fragrance. Inside, there are vegetables, pork ribs and bean curd skin. The pork ribs were very tender and soft.  However, I felt that the pork ribs were not meaty enough.

I doubt that I am coming back any time soon. I still prefer my Bak Kut Teh soup to be the peppery type. Maybe this (Klang style) will suit your taste bud, but it certainty did not suit me. There's another Bak Kut Teh outlet located nearby, just across the road. I hope to give it a try one day.

Yew Chuan Claypot Rice (Golden Mile Food Centre)

Yew Chuan Claypot Rice is located at a corner of the basement of Golden Mile Food Centre (also know as  Beach Road Army Market )

Menu
After ordering, you will need to wait for a minimum of 15 to 20minutes. I do not mind waiting as the claypot dishes are cooked only upon a customer's order.
Claypot Chicken Rice $5

Generous portion of Claypot Chicken Rice that can be shared among two people. I like the fact that customers can add the amount black sauce as preferred themselves. The vegetables on top help add colour to the dish and make it even more welcoming.
Add in the black sauce and mix it well. Be careful not to be scalded by the hot claypot.

A generous portion of chicken and sausages was given. The flavours were infused into the rice which was perfectly cooked (not too wet, not too dry). Moreover, with the ability to control the saltiness (through the black sauce). This claypot chicken rice was delicious! The best part was to scrap the burnt and charred rice stuck to the sides of the claypot. Best eaten together with the rice (unburnt) and chicken providing this whole mixture with a crispy and crunchy taste!

On another occasion, I ordered the Claypot Bak Kut Teh.
Claypot Bak Kut Teh $4.00
The Claypot Bak Kut Teh cost just $4.00! So value for money.

Lots of pork ribs
Many pieces of pork ribs were in this Claypot Bak Kut Teh. The meat was soft and tender, coming off the bones easily. The soup contained spices, garlic and pepper. However, the soup seems to lack body and the would have been much better if the flavour of spices was enhanced. I still prefer the one at Song Huat (Rocher).

Song Huat Bak Kut Teh (Rochor)

Song Huat Bak Kut Teh is located at Rochor Centre. Rochor Centre is slated for redevelopment in the next few years to make way for the new North-South Expressway. If you want to try the stalls in Rocher, try it fast before it is gone.

Needless to say, Song Huat Bak Kut Teh specialise in dishing out Bak Kut Teh.

Menu (sorry for unclear picture)
Bak Kut Teh ($5), You Tiao(油条) ($1), Rice ($0.50)
You Tiao(油条) ($1)
The You Tiao (油条) (also known as Dough Fritter) is basically fried dough. It was not crispy, however I like to dip it into the Bak Kut Teh Soup so that it absord the soup. Shiok!
Bak Kut Teh ($5)
The Bak Kut Teh comes with 4 big and long pieces of soft and tender pork rib. I was surprise at how tender the meat was and it was easy to separate the meat from the bone. Perfectly cooked pork ribs. The soup was full of flavour from the spices, garlic, pepper and pork meat. Not too peppery too. Quite a nice, decent bowl of bak kut teh. I was tempted to take my empty bowl and ask for more soup.

If you pass by Bugis, this stall is worth a try before it moves away. I will definitely be back after all it is so near my office.
