Chef Wai Hometown Noodle (Blk 461 Yishun) - CLOSED

Having stayed in Yishun nearly all my life, I was surprised to see a few photos showing the same food from Instagram. Curiosity got the better of me and when I clicked the location geo tag, I noticed that the stall was located in Yishun. 

The stall called Chef Wai Hometown Noodle is located at Blk 461 in Yishun. The owners are husband and wife. The menu offers Signature Seafood Pork Noodle, Pork Noodle, Meat Ball Noodle and even Bitter Gourd Pork Noodle.

I ordered the most expensive item on the menu, which is the Signature Seafood Pork Noodle (dry) which cost $6.50. Interestingly, it comes with an onsen egg on top of the noodles, which gave the noodles, a creamy and silky texture when they are well mixed. 


The bowl of cloudy soup was definitely the differentiating factor that makes this stall stands out. It was robust, flavourful and full of ingredients. It came with two deshell crunchy prawns, two squid rings, two meatballs, minced meat patty and slices of lean meat, fishcake and cabbage. 

The minced meat patty was unique in terms of taste, it taste as though powdered dried sole fish was added in it. I liked the soup so much that I finished the whole bowl of soup. 

I have gone back to visit the stall around 4 times thus far. Can't wait to visit them again.

Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 来興香菇肉脞面 (Toa Payoh)

Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 来興香菇肉脞面 is a very popular bak chor mee stall in Toa Payoh. They used to be located at Blk 51 but have shifted to Blk 73 in late 2018. Their relocation is good news for most foodies as it is now walking distance from Toa Payoh MRT station and Interchange.
Do not be deceive when you visit the stall and notice that there is no queue. They have adopted a queue system where you would be given a number after ordering and making payment. There is a sign next to the stall showing the number when the food is ready for collection.

I visited during lunch time on weekdays and slightly more than half an hour during each visit. Each time, the mee pok was already sold out!

I saw many people ordering the soup version and decided to give it a try. Boy, I had no regrets. The $5 Bee Tai Mak (Soup) tasted way better than the dry chilli version.

The bowl of Bee Tai Mak came with slices of braised chinese mushroom, lean meat, minced meat, bean sprouts, seaweed, liver, pork lard and even mock abalone. This whole combination provided different combination of taste and texture to the dish. The pork lard and beansprouts gave it a crisp and crunchy dimension while the mushroom provided the soup with so much flavour. 

This is one of the best soup bak chor mee I have tried.

The $5 Kway Teow Noodles (Dry) came with similar ingredients as the soup version. The bowl of soup that accompanied it tasted drastically different from the soup version of minced meat noodle.

The taste of the dry minced meat noodle was average. The sauce and chilli did not combine well with the ingredients. The chilli was just very spicy and lack the fragrance. As a result, the taste of the chilli overwhelmed the other taste of the ingredients and the sauce.

Go for the soup version! That is the food to try out!

Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 胜记香菇肉脞面 (Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre)

Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 胜记香菇肉脞面 is a popular minced meat noodles stall. Its unique selling point is and most popular dish is in fact another dish; Fish Maw (鱼鳔) Noodles. It is indeed surprisingly that a hawker stall would sell fish maw as it is considered a luxury item that is more commonly sold at a restaurant. This stall has been so successful in this dish that most people who patronise the stall would not hesitate to order this dish. 
The stall has been in operation for more than 30 years. It used to be located at Eunos before moving to Changi Road and eventually to its current location at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre. When we visited this stall on a weekday afternoon at lunch time there was a queue of 8 persons. The queue was slow moving as each dish was cooked individually. This was also one of the few stalls where there was a perpetual queue. 

We ordered the Fish Maw Noodles (Soup) $10 and Minced Meat Noodles (Dry) $4.50.

If you are visiting Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle, you have to order their signature Fish Maw Noodles (Soup) $10 since this is a dish that is not available at other hawker centres.

The Fish Maw Noodles (Soup) $10 was filled with lots of ingredients. There were lean meat, minced meat, pork liver, braised mushrooms, egg, beansprouts and 3 slices of fish maw! They were so generous with the fish maw and braised mushrooms. If you have cooked and ate fish maw at home, you would know that choosing and buying one of good quality is hard and costly. Cooking it is another art of its own. If you buy one of lousy quality you risk making the whole dish fishy. This stall executed the fish maw extremely well. The fish maw was not fishy and did not make the soup tasted fishy! *Claps*  

The soup was robust and tasty with a natural sweetness. Moreover, it had a unique smokey fragrance in it and the bites of dried fish sole enhanced the taste of the soup. No wonder most of their customers ordered the soup based version.
 Minced Meat Noodles (Dry) $4.50
The Minced Meat Noodles (Dry) $4 (also known as Bak Chor Mee) was quite unique as the sauce used was a concoction of dark soya sauce (instead of vinegar), mushroom sauce with chilli. The serving of ingredients was also very generous. There were many slices of lean meat, pork liver and minced meat. There were also lots of beansprouts at the bottom along with fried pork lard and  dried sole fish. What I liked most was the amount of braised mushroom given. Most minced meat noodles stall no longer cook and provide this, even if they do, they would just provide 3 slices. 

If you are at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre, do give their Fish Maw Soup Noodles dish a try. Its real good!

Ah Hua Kway Teow 亚华粿條(Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

Ah Hua Kway Teow 亚华粿條 is a Teochew kway teow soup eatery located 10 minutes walk from the causeway. In fact, it is near Hua Mui Coffee Shop and Hiap Joo Bakery
You can find Ah Hua Kway Teow 亚华粿條, by looking out for the big signage "Restoran Sekee". It is essentially the only stall operating in this coffeeshop/restoran.
Inside, there is a big seating capacity which can easily fit in 40 customers. When I visited on a Tuesday morning at 10 am, it was not crowded. There was less than 10 customers.  
There was just 2 person manning the stall. The lady took the orders, prepare the ingredients and cook them. Once the food was ready, a man would then deliver it to the table and collect the money. 
What caught our attention was this. The broth and ingredients were cooked over the charcoal stove! Wow, I really wonder how she manage and control the heat!
In terms of product offerings, it is simple. Just 2 sizes (i.e. small bowl for RM8 and big bowl for RM16). Of course you can choose the type of noodles and whether it should be dry or wet version etc.

Since I rarely visit Johor Bahru these days, I went for the RM16 (big) soup version. For the RM16 version, customers can choose for more ingredients or oysters. I chose more ingredients. 

When the bowl of kway teow arrived, I was surprised... because of the food presentation. The ingredients were were presented neatly. Noodles and meat slices were underneath. Liver slices were placed at one sie while kidney slices were on the other side. It was even topped with a piece of seaweed, that was placed at the top of the pile of kidney.

The Kway Teow RM16 was served with lots of kidney and liver slices, lean meat, minced meat, kway teow (noodles), pork lard, shallotand topped with seaweed. She was really very generous with the ingredients. There was more than 6 thick slices of kidney!

The kidney tasted difference from those that I had before. There was no yucky after taste and it was jelly like. Normally, when you cooked kidney soup, the flavour would overwhelm any other flavour in the broth. But for this version, it did not happen. Having said this, I must say that the broth was disappointing. Although it was cooked in pork bone over a charcoal stove, it was quite bland tasting, with just a mild-sweet flavour. Also, I had expected a smokey fragrance as it was cooked over a charcoal stove.. but that was clearly missing. I guess I had my expectations too high.

I noticed that most people ordered the dry version which comes with lots of orangey sauce. Maybe I should have ordered the dry version instead! (anyone ate that before?)

Parklane Teochew Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle (Bras Basah Complex)

Bras Basah Complex is a place frequent by art students from nearby art schools as it houses old-school bookstores and a full range of printing shops with different services. At a corner of the complex at level 1, it is home to Coffee Express 2000 Food Court. 
There is hidden gem within this food court and that is the stall selling minced meat noodles - Parklane Teochew Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle. If you frequent this food court, you will notice that this is one of the stalls with the longest queue. This stall used to be located at Paradiz Centre (now renamed as POMO) which is 10 minutes walk away. Judging from the queue, their loyal customers might have followed them to Bras Basah Complex.

For $4.30, the Teochew Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles came with noodles, minced pork, slices of fish cake, beans sprouts, lettuce, a fishball, two meatballs, a Teochew dumpling and pork lard. Taste wise, this was decent and in fact taste better than other bak chor mee stall. The addition of vinegar was a plus point for me. Also, the dumpling was flavourful. At $4.30, this bowl of noodles was relatively value for money.

Teo's Noodles (Bedok Interchange Food Centre)

Teo's Noodles is a popular traditional Fishball Minced Meat Noodles (aka Bak Chor Mee) stall located at Bedok Interchange Food Centre which is just minutes away from the Bedok MRT station and interchange. 
Teo's Noodles is very popular and I understand that their food can get sold out as early as 12pm on certain days. I visited on a weekday at 9am and was surprised to see a queue (of about 6 persons) at this stall.

They sell mainly Fishball Minced Meat Noodles with the option to add Razor Clams.

I ordered the Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams $4. I requested for the dry version with chilli and mee pok.

It was served with a bowl of soup that was filled with fishball, meatball, button mushroom, minced meat, and otah fishcakes and normal fishcakes.

The Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams was delicious! The bowl of noodles was well cooked. The mixture of chilli sauce and vinegar complemented the noodles perfectly. In addition, the crispy bits of pork lard was the icing on the cake. The bowl of noodles which contained all the "liao" (i.e fishball, meatball, button mushroom, minced meat, and otah fishcakes and normal fishcakes) was decent. My only complaint is that they could have been more generous with the ingredients especially the minced meat. 

I will certainly patronise this stall again if I visit the hawker centre.

761 Fishball Noodles (Yishun)

761 Fishball Noodles is located in a coffeeshop at Blk 761 at Yishun Street 72. The stall operates in the morning to early afternoon offering fishball noodles, minced meat noodles (bak chor mee) and laksa.
The waiting time is at least 20 minutes even on weekdays. Not an easy feat considering all the other stalls including other neighbourhood stalls have a lesser waiting time.

I have eaten at this stall several times. Every time I would order the Minced Meat Noodles (mee kia dry with chilli) $3, also known as Bak Chor Mee. They have got every aspect just right. The noodles was cooked just right and was not lumpy. The chilli sauce along with the noodles and minced meat was delicious. As for the fishballs, they were big, bouncy and not fishy.

The Minced Meat Noodles may not be the best, but it was certainly delicious. This is probably one of the reason why the waiting time is so long even on a weekday! Worth a try if you are staying around this area!

Kim Bak Chor Mee 金肉脞面 (Balestier Road)

Kim Bak Chor Mee 金肉脞面 is a minced meat noodles (bak chor mee) stall operated by an elderly man called Mr Ng. The stall located along Balestier Road has garnered quite a fair amount of reputation on the blogsphere in this year.
Mr Ng is in the photo above. I arrived on a weekday afternoon during lunch time and waited around 10 minutes before the food was served.

The Bak Chor Mee cost $4 consisted of noodles with braised mushroom served with a bowl of soup with sliced meat, pork liver, minced meat and meatballs in it.

This bowl of mee pok was quite good. The noodles were well cooked and the sauce was tasty with a hint of hae bee (dried shrimps). I particularly liked their braised mushroom which was so fragrant.

As for the bowl of soup, it was just so disappointing. The livers were sliced too thinly and was overcooked despite me removing them from the soup earlier. The rest of the ingredients like sliced meat, meatballs and the soup was mediocre. 

I am not too sure what the hype is about as there are other better bak chor mee stalls.

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle 吊桥头大华猪肉粿条面 (Lavendar)

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle has been in operation for over 75 years. This stall is extremely famous for its Pork Noodle also know as Bak Chor Mee (BCM) / Minced Pork Noodle. The owner of this stall, Mr Tang Chay Seng, first selling minced meat noodles 1936 at Hill Street before shifting to Marina Square in 1986, its present location is now at Crawford Lane. Located 5 minutes away from Lavendar MRT station, Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle can be found in a coffee shop (the coffee shop is called Tai Hwa Eating House) at the back of Immigration & Checkpoint Authority of Singapore (ICA).
I first got to know of this Bak Chor Mee stall in 2006. Since then, this has always been my favourite Bak Chor Mee. Long queues were a norm during lunch and dinner period with queues stretching out of the coffee shop (which means 45 minutes to 1 hour wait)! In the recent years, queues are frequent even during non-peak hours (e.g. 11am, 5pm). 
The prices of the food have increased significantly. From $3 in 2006 to  $4,$5,$6 in 2011 to $5,$6,$8,$10 in 2015 The owner is smart, as many customers including myself goes for the $8/$10 version after queuing for such a long duration, we just want to make our wait worthwhile (may as well right)? In addition, this is the kiasu Singaporean mentality.

Look at the amount of ingredients given. This Teochew style Bak Chor Mee was perfect. The ingredients were so fresh and cooked to perfection. The Pork Liver which was cooked just right deserved a mention; soft and tender with no unpleasant taste or smell. Can't find any fault with their meatballs, minced meat, dumplings, fried crispy fish and pork lard. They were all so good. Toss everything up with the mixture of chilli and vinegar sauce. The vinegar they used intensified the oomph factor of this dish. Irresistible!

It consisted of pork slices, minced meat, liver, meatballs, dumplings and seaweed! So tasty! The soup is full of essence of pork flavour that can only be achieve through hours of boiling pork meat and bones. I drank every single drop. 

Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle's Bak Chor Mee is still (and will be) my favourite Bak Chor Mee after all these years. In fact, its the best (die die must try!) Bak Chor Mee in Singapore. Fresh quality food that is well worth the money spent and time queuing. This is one food worth the wait and money! Can't wait to have more of this! This is the one and only Hill Street Tai Hwa! There are no other outlets!
