Goodwood Park Hotel Durian Fiesta 2012 - Dessert Buffet

The Goodwood Park Hotel Durian Fiesta is back again. The dessert buffet is available from 26 May to 31 July 2012 at the Coffee Lounge during lunch and dinner time. Over the past few years, during this period, I would buy their Durian Puffs from their booths in shopping centres.

This time round, I decided to try out the dessert buffet. There were a variety of durian and non-durian items available.

Durian Cappuccino Cake, Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Puff

Durian Cappuccino Cake, Mini Chocolate or Vanilla Waffle Cones filled with Durian Mousse

Durian Pancake, Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Pengat with Glutinous Rice and Gula Melaka
Here comes the non-durian part.
Raspberry Mascarpone Cake, Caramel Vanilla Cream Puff

Chocolate Tart with Mixed Fruits
Bread & Butter Pudding
Kueh Lapis, Nonya Kueh
Fruits, Movenpick Ice Cream

Clockwise from top left: Durian Pengat with Glutinous Rice with Gula Melaka,  Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Cappuccino Cake, Durian Puff
The new item; Durian Pengat with Glutinous Rice was disappointing as the rice was dry and hard. The Durian Mousse Cake which has been their signature item since 1983 did not disappoint. Soft, fluffy cake with lots of durian mousse on it. It was just right, rich yet not overly sweet nor heavy. The Durian Cappuccino Cake introduced last year (2011), was equally good. Coffee lovers will like this. The Durian Puff continue to be one of my favourites, had several helping of it.
Clockwise from top left: Bread & Butter Pudding with Vanilla Sauce,  Mini Chocolate and Vanilla Waffle Cones filled with Durian Mousse, Chocolate Tart with Mixed Fruits, Durian Pancake
I am not a big fan of Bread & Butter Pudding, but Goodwood Park's version was good! Give the Mini Chocolate and Vanilla Waffle Cone filled with Durian Mousse a skip. The cones were not crispy having been left out there for too long. Besides, the durian mousse is similar to those on other items. The Chocolate Tart with Mixed Fruits was hard and dry. The Durian Pancake was freshly made on the spot.
Pulut Hitam
Barley with Ginko Nut & Quail Egg
There were also 2 traditional hot desserts available; the Pulut Hitam and Barley with Ginko Nut & Quail Egg. The Pulut Hitam was normal. Whereas the Barley with Ginko Nut & Quail Egg was unique as it came with Quail Egg!
Mango with Pomelo and Sago
Besides fruits and ice cream, there was Mango with Pomelo and Sago too.

I did not enjoy the buffet as much as what I would have expected. The main reason was because after trying out several items I felt sick of the food as the filling were the same (durian mousse). It was a case of durian overdose. To think that I had only one helping of the items except for the durian puffs which I took 3. I will just stick back to the buying of the durian puffs when they setup shop in shopping centres.

As you can see read from this post, I am not such a big fan of durian. If you are a durian lover, you will love this dessert buffet!

The prices for the Durian Fiesta are:
- $32.80++ (Dessert Buffet)
- $26.80++ (Top-up with any a la carte main course order)
- $48.80++ (Taiwan Porridge a la carte buffet with dessert buffet)
Note, this is only available during lunch and dinner timings daily.

Island Creamery (Serene Centre)

Island Creamery a ice cream parlour specialises in producing freshly made premium ice creams with local flavours. Premium ingredients are used with no artificial flavours, colourings, preservatives, eggs or gelatine.
I visited Island Creamery at Serene Centre, located at the junction of Bukit Timah Road and Farrer Road. Island Creamery and Tom’s Palette seems to have similar branding. But the key differentiator is that Island Creamery is known for its local flavour ice cream such as Teh Tarik, Pulut Hitam, Pineapple Tart, Holicks and Bandung. The lastest addition they have is Bak Kwa ice cream!

Menu
Another differentiator is that besides Ice Creams, there are Ice Cream Cakes, Baked Alaska and Mudpies.
Fridge full of Ice Cream Cakes, Mudpies and tubs of Ice Cream for take away
Double Scoop Ice Cream [Pulut Hitam (left) & Nutella (right)] $4.50
We ordered the Double Scoop Ice Cream with the 2 flavours Pulut Hitam and Nutella. Pulut Hitam is also know as Black Glutinous Rice. The Pulut Hitam ice cream taste just like the real thing! Whoever though of making this dessert into an ice cream is a genius! The Nutella was good too. I wish that there was more chunks of Nutella in it.
Mud Pie $4.80
Top to bottom layer of ice cream: ReversO, Cookies'n Cream and Burnt Caramel)
The Mud Pie is highly recommended by my sister. The top layer and bottom layer is covered in Oreo crumbs. In the middle, there are 3 layers of ice cream namely; (top to bottom) ReversO, Cookies'n Cream and Burnt Caramel. The Mud Pie was superb! I like their crunchy Oreo crumbs. And it certainty helps that their ice cream is fabulous too! Another must try item!

We decided to buy a tub of ice cream back home, had a hard time deciding what to buy.
Used to pack the ice cream
Tub of Nutella Ice Cream $9.00
Tub of Nutella Ice Cream $9.00
After hesitating for a long time, we decided to buy a tub of Nutella. We were torn between buying Pulut Hitam or Nutella. This time round, I felt that the Nutella taste slightly different from the one I had at Serene Centre. It was more diluted with much even lesser chunks of Nutella. Do note that the ice cream has to be consumed within 3 days as no preservatives were added.

I wish that I live near Island Creamery. However, I am putting up in the north and Serene Centre is located too far away. If not for that, I would frequent this ice cream parlour for its Pulut Hitam Ice Cream! If you are in the area, try the ice cream there!

ps: Readers in Indonesia who happen to read this, Island Creamery has opened a Indonesia (near Jakarta)

Sugalight Factory (Joo Chiat Place)

Sugalight Factory specialises in ice creams that are sugar-free low-fat. Most ice cream contains dairy cream, sugar and egg yolks. Sugalight uses none of this!
Sugalight ice creams are made using a premium natural sweetener made from corn known as Xylitol. Some of us may have encountered Xylitol as it is frequently used in chewing gums as a sweetener. Xylitol is known to help prevent tooth decay, lower calories than sugar and does not contribute to high sugar levels. Hence, Sugalight's ice cream are diabetes friendly and for those who are healthy conscious.
Sugalight ice cream comes in many flavours such as Rocky Chocolate, Plain Valrhona Chocolate, D24 Durian, Strawberry Bliss, Fat-Free Mango Sorbet, Bailey's Irish Cream, Cappuccino, Italian Hazelnut, Purple Yam - Ube, Pulut Hitam etc.
Menu
Cookie Monster
Clockwise from the Left (Vanilla Macadamia, Cookie Monster, Purple Yam-Ube)
Purple Yam - Ube made from purple yam specially imported from Philippines. I like yam ice cream and will frequently try out it out. Sugalight Factory's version is unique, it taste different and is more fragrant with hint of coconut.

Cookie Monster, similar to Cookies & Cream ice cream. Generous amount of Oreo cookie chunks in the ice cream such that you re able to get a chunk with each spoonful.
Clockwise from the Left (Plain Valrhona Chocolate, Chocomint, Pulut Hitam)
Plain Valrhona Chocolate ice cream is a must order if you are a chocolate lover. Thick, dark strong chocolate taste.

Chocomint, mint ice cream with chocolate chips. Sugalight's version was just nice for both of us. The mint flavour was not overpowering with the generous amount of chocolate chips, this was refreshing!

Pulut Hitam, Black Glutinous Rice dessert made into ice cream!
Root Beer Float (Sea Salt Horlicks Ice Cream) $5.00
We were lucky to be able to try Sugalight's latest product; Root Beer FloatRoot Beer Float consists of sugar free root beer with ice cream! Yes, sugar free! The best part is that we can't taste the difference between a sugar free or non sugar free root beer! We both like this! Brings back memories of the days when A&W was still in operating in Singapore! Now you can get your Root Beer Float at Sugalight!
Besides selling these, Sugalight sells a whole range of sugar-free products such as chocolates, cookies, sweets, marshmallows etc.
Only 1 box of sugar-free Root Beer ($18) left on the shelf. This is imported from USA.
If 1 box of Root Beer is too many for you, you can buy just 1 can at $1.80. On such a hot and humid day, i wish I can grab one of these!
If you are there, say hi to the bear sitting on the ledge. He is disgruntled from getting a sore bottom sitting there for so long without any salary. (as mentioned in Sugalight's facebook). Sugalight does corporate events and parties too. If you are thinking of getting ice creams for parties, this could be it.

Currently, Sugalight is having a promotion for students. Students get to buy 1 single scoop of ice cream and get the other free. This is valid on weekdays from 12pm to 6pm. Students will need to show their student IDs.

Sugalight also offers free delivery to your home or office for orders above $50. Each tub of ice cream retails for $10.50. If the order is less that $50, there will be an additional charge of $10.

Besides those flavours mentioned above,we tried many other flavours of ice cream. Our top favourites will be the Purple Yam - Ube, Chocomint and Root Beer Float! We can now enjoy our ice cream and root beer guilt-free!

Thank you Elgin and Sugalight for the kind hospitality and invite.
