Kok Kee Wanton Noodle 国记云吞面 (Lavendar)


Kok Kee Wanton Noodle 国记云吞面 (Lavendar) has been a stall I have been wanting try for years.I was thrilled to be sent on course with the course location a 5 minutes walk away from Kok Kee. 
Jumbo seems to have completed the $2.1 million acquisition for a 75% stake in the stall and brand as the owners are not spotted at the stall. 
In addition, the staff are now wearing uniforms. 
Price wise, I understand that it has not changed since the acquisition. Each plate of Wanton Noodle starts at $5. 
I wanted to try both the dumplings and wanton. Hence, I ordered the $5 wanton noodles and added on two dumplings for $2. Which means each dumpling cost $1 and the total cost of the meal was $7. If you ask me, price is on the higher end. Unless Jumbo expands the number of outlets aggressively, I wonder when they are going to breakeven and generate returns for their shareholders. 
I have never tried Kok Kee before and cannot compare the taste prior to the acquisition. What stood out for me was the wanton noodle. It tasted so difference from elsewhere. Each strand of noodle was so smooth, soft yet springy. With their home made special sauce I found myself slurping the noodles endlessly. It was that good. The two pieces of wanton and char siew were average. At least the dumpling was decent, big in size and had a crunchy bite. The star of the dish was really the noodles with the special sauce. Not too sure that it is worth the $5 price tag.

ENG's Wantan Noodle (Vivo City)

I have heard so much about ENG’s wanton noodle before but not given it a try as it is located away from where I stay.

Ironically, in a twist of events, the recent dispute between the founder's son and business partner over how the original stall was run resulted in them splitting. Which led to Eng’s Wanton Noodle expanding aggressively across the island.

This happened when the business partner decided to exit the business and transferring the lease to the chief executive of Lao Huo Tang (老火汤), who decided to bring Eng’s wanton noodles to the heartlands to make it more convenient for customers to grab a bite instead of going all the way to Tanjong Katong Road.

If you are still confused, ENG's Wantan Noodle is managed by Lao Huo Tang while ENG'S Char Siew Wantan Mee is by the founder's children. By now, you may have noticed ENG's Wantan Noodle appearing in many heartlands. Besides Vivo City, they are also at many other locations such as Westgate, Bukit Panjang, Eastpoint Mall, AMK Hub and 287 Tanjong Katong Road, Northpoint City, Causeway Point and Tiong Bahru Plaza.

Their menu at Vivo City is limited as the unit space is small. They sell only Wanton Mee, Wanton, Ngoh Hiang, Oyster Sauce Vegetable and Drinks. The pork lard is free flow. The outlet at Northpoint sells Toast and Soft Boiled Eggs too.

This is the large version of the dry Wanton Mee which cost $5.50. The wanton noodles was cooked perfectly. The texture, springiness and taste of the noodles was spot on. It was good enough such that you can keep slurping only the noodles and not feel jelak (sick of eating).

The Fried Wantan $3 did not stand out. The filling and taste was typical of the fried wantan you can get elsewhere.

The $6 Fried Ngoh Hiang was average too. As a Teochew, I may have been too particular about this dish and am too used to having chestnuts in my Ngoh Hiang (which provides a crunchy bite).

Taste wise, I was expecting to be wow. Although I was not wow, I must say that the taste of the wanton mee, specifically, the noodles was above average. Surprisingly, considering how fast the business has expanded. I can foresee myself coming back just for the Wanton Mee again and again.

632 Yishun Wanton Noodles

632 Yishun Wanton Noodles is another stall in Yishun that is quite popular. It is located in a coffeeshop at a quiet neighbourhood in Yishun. The only tell tale sign of its popularity is the queue at this stall.
As the name of the stall suggest, it sells Wanton Noodles, which most people orders. The second most popular dish is the Chicken Feet Noodles. One unique item available is the Spinach Noodles.  
The stall opens daily from 6am and the stall would typically close slightly after 10am when they have sold out their food. In fact it is quite ridiculous, I have visited on two weekends and on both occasions, their dumplings noodles and pork ribs noodles were sold out at 8.30am!

On weekdays, they close at around 1pm (will be earlier if they have sold out their food).
Wanton Mee $2.50
Their most popular dish; Wanton Noodles was really value for money. At $2,50, it was served with a generous serving of mee, char siew, vegetables and 3 wantons. There were pieces of chestnut in the wanton which provided helped provided a crunchy dimension. 

Taste wise, it was pretty decent. You really can't find fault with this dish when it cost only $2.50. In fact, my personal opinion is that it taste pretty good and was quite filling considering the price tag.

As for the Chicken Feet Noodles $3.00, it was served with 2 pieces of braised chicken claws, 2 pieces of mushroom and a very generous serving of mee.

Taste wise, while the chicken claws taste pretty decent, it was a waste that the mushrooms were dry and not fragrant. Else, this would have been a very good dish.

A tip, instead of ordering this mee kia noodles, you can consider ordering kway teow/horfun! Somehow, it taste way better =).

Chin Seng Cooked Food (Tekka Centre)

Chin Seng Cooked Food is a noodles stall located at Tekka Market and Food Centre run by an elderly couple.
The stall owners make the Char Siew themselves each morning. The lady owner explained that making the Char Siew themselves is nicer compared to buying it (outside). Although their opening hours is from 7am to 3pm daily, they have to come before 5am to prepare. And after closing, they would also need to wash the dishes, clean the stall and prepare for the next day. Sometimes they have to stay till as late as 5pm. It is literally a 12 hours job. Despite that, they do not have any rest day as they need to earn a living.
This is also partly the reason why, you would see them wrapping wanton / dumplings whenever they have any free time.

For just $3, this plate of Wanton Noodles (mee) is value for money. It came with lots of noodles, char siew, vegetables and a bowl of wanton soup.

Lot at the amount of carbo (noodles) give. The noodles was not overcooked and there was lots of sauce underneath it. The char siew which they made themselves was delicious. It was not dry and had a good balance of lean meat and fats.

There were five pieces of wanton given. The wantons were delicious. They were so generous with the meat  fillings and seasoned it well.

On another occasion, I ordered the Dumpling Noodles $3 and topped up $0.50 for their char siew.

The char siew which they made themselves was so delicious. I love the charred bits at the exterior!

Four pieces of dumplings was given. These were big and delicious! They have probably added pieces of chestnuts into it to give it a crunchy bite.

I also tried their Chicken Chop Noodles $3. The chicken is fried just before serving. In bite sizes, children will love this!

I can forsee myself coming back for more wanton noodles and dumpling noodles! The food here is cheap and good!

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee 十九街雲吞麵 (Ang Mo Kio)

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee 十九街雲吞麵 is a Thai style wanton mee stall that opened 2 years ago in Ang Mo Kio. If just seeing/hearing the name makes you think of the Bangkok's Saeb X2 Wonton Noodles, then you must be a foodie! The address of Saeb X2 is also Soi 19! 
According to makansutra, the owner of this stall is a Singaporean called Mr Ng Sing Chow who learnt how to cook Thai style wanton mee in Thailand. This stall in Singapore is not related to Saeb X2. 
The minimum order is $3.50 and customers have a choice to upsize, going up to $5. I have tried visiting this stall on a previous occasion, but the queue was just way too long (at least 15 to 20 people long). I was lucky on my second time when I visited on Sunday at 2pm. The queue was just 5 person long.

After waiting a good 15 minutes, we received our order. The Thai Wanton Mee was served with a bowl with 2 wantons. Customers can help themselves to the condiments such as dry chilli flakes, sugar, green chilli and fried pork lard.

The bowl of Thai Wanton Mee consisted of egg noodle, vegetables, char siew, fried wanton and was topped with spring onions. Unlike our local style wanton mee, the Thai Wanton Mee was not accompanied with any sauce. Although it seems dry, once you mix this up, you would actually taste and find out that each strand of egg noodles was well 'oiled' with the pork lard fragrance. Although the egg noodles coupled with the pork lard oil tasted wonderful, it was a tad too oily for my liking. The other ingredients such as char siew, fried wanton and vegetables were really just average.

The soup with a little sweetish and salty. The two wantons in it did not wow me.

I bought back a packet of Thai Wanton Mee $4 for my family to try. 

From what I remember of my experience at SaebX2, the wanton mee at Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee tasted better. However, I would not queue for too long for this and would certainly prefer for it to be less oily. Do note the that this stall is only open from Thursday to Sunday from 730am to 3pm.

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House (Sunshine Plaza)

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House is located at Sunshine Plaza. Over the years, it had gained quite a number of fans including celebrities for its wanton mee. 
Previously, Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House had two outlets. One located in Sunshine Plaza and the other at North Bridge Road just opposite Bugis Junction Shopping Centre. Recently; 1 year ago, their second outlet at North Bridge Road closed. This means that they are now located only in Sunshine Plaza.
Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House at Sunshine Plaza owns two units; directly opposite each other. There are lots of sitting capacity available.

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House's revised menu. As you can see, they sell a wide variety of food. Their most well-known food are the Yun Tun Mee (Wanton Mee) and Fried Yun Tun (Fried Wanton).
Fried Yun Tun Noodles $4
The Fried Yun Tun Noodles comes in either $4 or $5. Regulars might notice that there has been a price increased since November 2011 . Previously, it was $3.50 or $4.50.

The Fried Yun Tun Noodles (Wanton Mee) was served with fried wantons, char siew and vegetables in dark soya sauce. The noodles was QQ, springy and well cooked. Mixed with the dark soya sauce, it was not dry and added flavour to the noodles. The char siew which is also an important ingredient in a plate of wanton mee was tender and flavourful However, some slices were slight hard.  

The Fried Yun Tun (Fried Wanton) is a popular item in Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House. Many customers would order $2 worth of fried wantons to share. The fried wantons were addictive, however I wish that more meat was wrapped in it.
The  Fried Yun Tun Noodles (Wanton Mee) was also served with a small bowl of soup with two pieces of Yun Tun (Wantons) in it. 
Old Cucumber Soup $3.80
Although the Old Cucumber Soup seemed full of ingredients, this was because it was served in a very small metal bowl. The ingredients include pork meat, old cucumber, carrot and wolf berries. I thought that the soup was real decent, but it was on the salty end.

Overall, I thought that the wanton mee was not bad and certainly worth making a trip down for it.

Tai Seng Noodle House (Amoy Street Food Centre)

I have been to Amoy Street Food Centre several times during lunch time on weekdays. To say the place is crowded is an understatement. Wait till you see the queues that stretch more than 20 people long and the tables are not cleared as the cleaners could not cope with the crowd. 

This time, I came down for lunch at 140pm. The lunch crowd was starting to slowly disperse away and more than half of the tables in the level 2 food centre were empty. But the tables were full of plates, bowls, trays as the cleaners struggle to clear them. As you walk inwards, you will notice that some of the utensils including trays are on the floor as customers had to clear the tables themselves. 

I knew that this was a good opportunity to try out one of the stalls that always have a long queue during lunch. I decided to zoom straight to Tai Seng Noodle House as there was no queue and I was hungry. Normally, if you come during lunch time, there will be a long stretching queue. There were a couple manning the song. The uncle taking orders and collecting the cash while the lady boss prepares and cooks the food.

Not knowing what to order, I decided to order their Cha Shao Yun Tun Noodle (Char Siew Wanton Noodle). As usual (in fact I will say act smart..), I 'upsized' my order, ordering $4 instead of $3. 
I was quite shocked when the uncle gave me my order. It was messy and  big huge massive!

This was the $4 Char Siew Wanton Noodle which was served with a bowl of wanton soup. They were extremely generous with the ingredients; char siew, noodles and even wantons. 

The Char Siew given was tough and mainly lean meat. If there was a better ratio of fats to lean meat, it would have been better. With such a generous portion of Char Siew given, I got quite tired of chewing the Char Siew. A very generous serving of noodles was given too. The noodles was well cooked, with springiness and not too soggy. It was delish when mixed with the sauce which ensures that each strand of noodles was well lubricated.

The Wanton Soup was normal, there might be some MSG added into the soup. It came with lots of wantons, more than 10 pieces. Although each piece of wanton was small, with such a generous amount given, it was very filling. I especially like the skin of the wanton which was smooth and thin with a chunk of meat fillings in it. (for the sake of comparison, the fillings of each wanton was slightly bigger than those given at Pontian Wanton).

I should not have 'upsized' my order and just order the $3 version. Although I finish the Wantons, I did not manage to finish the noodles and Char Siew. 

Tai Seng Noodle House may not serve the best food, but it certainly must be the most value for money food stall around. The portions given are huge. No wonder there is always a long snacking queue at this stall. I heard that the pork rib noodles at this stall are good. If I have another opportunity, I would be keen to try it.

Tow Seng Wanton Mee (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre)

Tow Seng Wanton Mee is located at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre. You are spoilt for choice at this food centre as it is big! I find it amazing whenever I come here and notice the same few stalls having a queue. Tow Seng Wanton Mee is one of them!
They sell just 3 items; Wanton Mee, Chicken Mushroom Mee and Chicken Drumstick Noodle. You can expect to queue more than 15 minutes during lunch/dinner time.
Wanton Mee (Dry) $3.00
You can either choose to order the $2.50 or $3.00 Wanton Mee. I ordered the $3.00 version with no chilli. The noodle was springy (QQ) and not stuck together as a lump. With the self-made sauce, each strand of noodle was well oiled and delicious. It was so yummy that I found myself continuous eating the noodle! The Char Siew was too dry while the green chilli enhanced the taste of the dish.

The wanton was average but still this is a very decent bowl of wanton meal saved by the perfectly cooked noodles and sauce!
Chicken Mushroom Mee $2.50 
This is the Chicken Mushroom Mee. Shredded chicken, steamed vegetables and fragrant mushrooms are the normal ingredients for such a dish. The highlight is the perfectly self-made sauce! Brings the taste of this dish to a whole new level. Where can you find such a decent bowl of Chicken Mushroom Mee at $2.50!

I certainty do not mind queuing as this is one of the better Wanton Mee and Chicken Mushroom Mee stall in the food centre. Think most people knows this too, that explains the perpetual queue at this stall. This also made me realised that the sauce plays an important role too.
