Top 1 Home Made Noodle 一级棒好吃面粉粿 (Beauty World Centre)

You Mian with Meat Balls and Egg
This is a stall; Top 1 Home Made Noodle 一级棒好吃面粉粿 that I have been wanting to visit. But because it is out of the way, I have procrastinated until now. Thanks to the government efforts for a “Car-Lite Singapore”, we now have Downtown Line 2 which has a station located next to Beauty World Centre. So convenient! Located at the 4th level of Beauty World Centre is an open air food centre; Beauty World Centre Food Centre.
Top 1 Home Made Noodle 一级棒好吃面粉粿 has been highly raved about and is (known) as one of the must try at Beauty World Centre Food Centre.
As the name of the stall suggests, it specialises in a variety of hand made noodles. Customers can also choose the cooking style and main ingredient. The different varieties are displayed (as shown on the above photo).
You Mian with Meat Balls and Egg
I ordered the You Mian with Meat Balls and Egg. I heard about how long the waiting time could be; 1 hour. But I did not encounter such a waiting time. In fact, the stall owners were free and they cooked my food immediately. I visited on a weekday during lunch hour at 12.30 pm.

The You Mian with Meat Balls and Egg was served with 3 slices of mushroom, 2 meat balls, 1 stalk of green vegetables and topped with ikan bilis and shallots. The portion/serving of ingredients was quite pathetic. Taste wise, it was an ordinary bowl of hand made noodles which was similar to those that you can get commonly elsewhere. The main difference was the bowl of soup which was flavourful, rich and with a hint of sweetness. I polished off the soup and still felt hungry.

I don't think that this is worth queuing 1 hour for. Nevertheless, as I am a great fan of handmade noodles, I would like to try the dry version if I do come back one day.

Teo's Noodles (Bedok Interchange Food Centre)

Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams $4
Teo's Noodles is a popular traditional Fishball Minced Meat Noodles (aka Bak Chor Mee) stall located at Bedok Interchange Food Centre which is just minutes away from the Bedok MRT station and interchange.
Teo's Noodles is very popular and I understand that their food can get sold out as early as 12pm on certain days. I visited on a weekday at 9am and was surprised to see a queue (of about 6 persons) at this stall.
Menu
They sell mainly Fishball Minced Meat Noodles with the option to add Razor Clams.
Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams $4
I ordered the Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams $4. I requested for the dry version with chilli and mee pok.
Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams $4
It was served with a bowl of soup that was filled with fishball, meatball, button mushroom, minced meat, and otah fishcakes and normal fishcakes.

The Fishball Minced Meat Noodles With Razor Clams was delicious! The bowl of noodles was well cooked. The mixture of chilli sauce and vinegar complemented the noodles perfectly. In addition, the crispy bits of pork lard was the icing on the cake. The bowl of noodles which contained all the "liao" (i.e fishball, meatball, button mushroom, minced meat, and otah fishcakes and normal fishcakes) was decent. My only complaint is that they could have been more generous with the ingredients especially the minced meat.

I will certainly patronise this stall again if I visit the hawker centre.

BeefSteak Nam Son (Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh)

BeefSteak Nam Son also known as "Nam Sơn" among the locals is a no frills Vietnamese restaurant. I understand the locals love coming to this restaurant for breakfast and some visit as early as 6am or 630am!
BeefSteak Nam Son as its name suggests specialises in serving Vietnamese style western food; beefsteak (Bít tết). It has 2 branches. The branch that we went to was located along the Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai (main road).
After seeing the signboard, we turned in and found ourselves in a long alley filled with rows of motorcycles. At the end of the alley, we reached the entrance of the restaurant.
Entering the restaurant, we were greeted by rows of dark wooden tables and white plastic chairs that were arranged systematically to maximise the space. The above photo shows part of the outdoor dining area. There was also an indoor dining area with the same type of tables and chairs. In terms of furnishing, it was simple and basic. Although there was no air conditioners, the restaurant had high ceiling with many ceiling and wall fans. Hence, it was well-ventilated.

We were surprised to see that the restaurant was full when we arrived at 9am for breakfast as it had such a large sitting capacity. Despite the crowd, we were able to find a table shortly at the indoor dining area.
Menu
The menu with most of main and side dishes. This should be for foreigners as it was translated in English language.
Menu
On the other side, it was the beverage menu. We noticed that most of their customers seems to be regulars as they did not need a menu and ordered on the spot. It was fairly easy ordering as they had many staff who were able to multitask. You could order through anyone (e.g. the person who is clearing or serving the food.

The condiments (chilli sauce, fish sauce, pepper) on every table.
Daily Homemade Passion Fruit with Ice (Chanh dây) 25,000 VND (S$1.50)
This was the Daily Homemade Passion Fruit with Ice (Chanh dây) 25,000 VND (S$1.50).
Baguette (Bánh Mì), Salad, Cucumber and carrot mixed with olive oil (Món Chua), French Fries (Khoai tây chiên)
Although the restaurant was full, shortly after we ordered, these [Baguette (Bánh Mì), Cucumber and carrot mixed with olive oil (Món Chua), French Fries (Khoai tây chiên)] were served at our table!

The Baguette (Bánh Mì) and Salad were complimentary dishes. The Baguette deserves a mention. It was very well executed and it was so good that we requested for more after our main dishes came! (You can request for unlimited replenishment of Baguette)
French Fries (Khoai tây chiên) 15,000 VND (S$0.90)
We ordered French Fries (Khoai tây chiên) 15,000 VND (S$0.90) for sharing. Although it was average, this was a good side dish was soaking up all the sauce in the hotplate of meat!
Ostrich Steak (Bít tết Đà Điểu) 90,000 VND (S$5.40)
The partner ordered the Ostrich Steak (Bít tết Đà Điểu) 90,000 VND (S$5.40) which was served with a sunny side up egg on a hotplate.
Nam Son Specialty Combination of Steak, Sunny Side Up Egg, Meatball and Pate (Beefsteak Thập Cẩm) 60,000 VND (S$3.60)
I ordered the Nam Son Specialty Combination of Steak, Sunny Side Up Egg, Meatball and Pate (Beefsteak Thập Cẩm) 60,000 VND (S$3.60) which was also served on a sizzling hotplate which splattered the oil and sauces out. The serving was generous as the cut of the meat was fairly large. We followed what the local did and shredded our Baguette into small pieces and dipped them into the sauces and also spread pate on it.

If you are wondering what pate is, it is actually minced pork liver.

Never underestimate the influence of western breakfast in Vietnam. It was so crowded when we visited and majority of the crowd was locals except for another foreign couple. Despite the crowd, the service was prompt and efficient! In addition, the food was unique. This is worth a visit if you are interested in trying what the locals eat.

IKEA Restaurant & Cafe (Alexandra)

IKEA Restaurant & Cafe at Alexandra is also known as The IKEA Food Store. According to a report published last year, the best seller is actually their chicken wings and their Swedish Meatballs are their second best sellers in Singapore selling up to 39,000 meatballs daily! If that is the case, I wonder how many chicken wings they sell each day!
IKEA Restaurant & Cafe is normally very crowded, but the good news is that their dining area is huge! It was quite easy getting a table.
There are also microwaves available should you need to heat up your food.
IKEA Restaurant & Cafe is a self-service restaurant. Its concept is similar to a school's or army's cafeteria where customers queue up to take a tray, going to the different sections to order their food. There are also trolleys specially to put trays on it to make it easier to buy lots of food! Great concept. The flip side is that the food is typically prepared before hand and place on warmers. They are not cooked on the spot.

Once you have collected your food, you will be required to pay up at the cashier. Fortunately, there was no need to lift all the trays up from the trolley. The cashier is able to tally the items without you needing to lift a finger.
Swedish Meatballs (10 pcs) $5.50
IKEA changed their Swedish Meatball recipe to make it softer and also more authentic. There were many customers who posted in IKEA Singapore's Facebook and also on forums requesting for IKEA to switch back to the previous Meatball recipe. After trying the Swedish Meatballs (made of a mixture of pork and beef), I am also one of those who prefer the previous version. This new version was way too soft, lacked texture and was not springy. The potatoes at the side were disappointing. they were hard and powdery.

Editor Note: IKEA Singapore temporary stopped the sales of their meatballs amid the horse meat scandal and sent their meatballs for DNA testing to ensure that they contain no horse meat. After the test results showed that there were no horse meat in the meatballs, IKEA Singapore released a press statement on 7 March stating that they will resume the sales of meatballs on 8 March 2013. To mark the return of the meatballs, IKEA will sell the meatballs at $0.10 per piece on 8 March 2013.
Chicken Wings $2.80

The Chicken Wings were mouthwatering. The Chicken Wings were so well marinated that even the meat on the inside were tasty and fragrant. As for the outside, the skin was so crispy. Finger licking good and addictive. It will be hard to stop at one. Almost every table in here has a plate of Chicken Wings.
Poached Salmon with Chives Sauce $7.90
The Poached Salmon with Chives Sauce was delish. A generous serving of salmon was given and the sauce complemented it perfectly. Again, the potatoes were hard and powdery.
Ribeye Steak  $9.90
The Ribeye Steak served with potatoes, broccoli and mushroom sauce was disappointing. The steak was hard, tough and chewy. While the broccoli was overcooked and potatoes were powdery. The only consolation was that the mushroom sauce was quite good.

This time round, I was very disappointed with the quality of food at Ikea Restaurant and Cafe. The Swedish Meatballs, Ribeye Steak and Potatoes were terrible. The Chicken Wings are the only item that makes me want to go back. Can we have the old Swedish Meatballs back, please.
