Piao Ji Fish Porridge 標记 (Amoy Street Food Centre)

Fish and Prawn Soup $13
There are two popular fish soup stalls at level two of Amoy Street Food Center. One is Piao Ji while other is Han Kee. Both stalls are bounded to have long queues with waiting time of more than 30 minutes during lunch time.
I first ate at Piao Ji Fish Porridge 標记 in 2011, when FoodieFC was on WordPress instead of BlogSpot. Long time patrons of Piao Ji would know that the original owner, Yar Choon Phiow then 79 announced in 2023 that he was planning to sell the business due to health reasons. If there were no takers, he would close down the business.

I am glad that he managed to sell off the business since he had been running it for 54 years. Our hawkers do deserve to retire and cash our their hardwork (legacy) when needed.
Fish and Prawn Soup $13 with Rice $0.50
With a new owner, only Fish and Fish & Prawn are offered. The fish used is Batang (Spanish Mackerel). Pomfret fish which is considered a more expensive and premium fish due to its smoother and tender texture and taste, is no longer being sold.
Fish and Prawn Soup $13
I ordered the Fish and Prawn Soup $13 with Rice ($0.50). It came with two prawns and several slices of Batang (Spanish Mackerel).
Batang Fish
Look at how thick this slice of Batang Fish is. Each piece was chunky yet smooth. The taste of the sweetness retained in the fish, showed how fresh the fish was. There was no fishy smell or taste.

The freshness of the fish reminds of the one at Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup which is located in Albert Centre Market & Food Centre (Bugis).

Prawn
The two prawns were big and fresh. Look at the size of it compared to the spoon.
It was so fresh that when you held it by its head, the head remained firmly attached to the body. The prawn had also been deshelled in the middle and deveined.

I love just how fresh the fish and prawns were.

The soup seemed slightly difference from the previous owner with the additional of pork lard. It was more robust and flavourful compared to the one by the original owner.

Definitely, still a stall worth checking out especially if you like fish soup.
