Number 8 Red Grouper Soup 8号红石斑鱼汤 2nd Post

Another trip down to Jalan Besar to savour the fish soup from Number 8 Red Grouper Soup 8号红石斑鱼汤. As its name suggests, Number 8 Red Grouper Soup specialises in serving fish soup.
It is located at a coffee shop a stone throw away from Lavendar MRT station. It is located directly opposite Jalan Besar Stadium.

Menu
Having tried the Bittergourd Red Grouper Bee Hoon in a earlier visit. I was torn between ordering what I have ordered previously or to try something different. In the end, I decided to try something new and ordered the Pomfret Bee Hoon.
Pomfret Bee Hoon $10
The Pomfret Bee Hoon was served with slices of bittergourd, pomfret meat, bee hoon and topped with shallots and dried crispy fish. I like the fact that they are so generous with their ingredients be it slices of bittergourd or pomfret. The bittergourd are sliced at the right thickness, not too thin or thick.
Pomfret Bee Hoon $10
In addition, the slices of Pomfret were also sliced perfectly. Thick and chunky, enough to give a good bite. The reason why I am saying this is because, I have eaten at several fish soup stalls where the pieces of fish were sliced so thinly that I could not even taste the fish meat and left unsatisfied. More importantly, with the thickness, the Pomfret was obviously fresh with its delicate sweetness. I was pleasantly surprised that they gave so many slices of Pomfret as fresh Pomfret is typically quit expensive. Do note Pomfret normally comes with bones especially when the parts at the fins are served. This is also the part I like best. So if you are a fish lover, but hate fish bones, a better choice will be the Bittergourd Red Grouper Bee Hoon

Lastly, the fish soup was still as good as before. Tasty and flavourful, full of goodness. I emptied the whole bowl of soup into my tummy as usual. Yummy.

Give this a try. It maybe more expensive than the other fish soup at other coffee shops but it is worth every single cent. The fish are not only fresh, generous amount of ingredients are given too.

Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon 金华鱼头米粉 (Maxwell Food Centre)

Jin Hua Fish Head Bee Hoon 金华鱼头米粉 located at Maxwell Food Centre, specialises in serving Cantonese style fish soup. I have read many positive reviews on this stall and was looking forward to trying it for myself.

Despite being there on a weekday evening (615pm) for dinner, there was a long queue of more than 10 people. This is one of the only two stall with such a long queue. The other stall with a similar long queue is none other than Lao Ban Soya Beancurd.
Menu
Fish Porridge, Fried Fish and Sliced Fish soup and bee hoon are available.

After queuing for half an hour then was I able to order and receive my food. The reason for the long queue? Well, there is only 1 person cooking and he is cooking only 2 bowls at any one time.
Slice Fish Bee Hoon $5
Slice Fish Bee Hoon $5
The Sliced Fish Bee Hoon was filled with ingredients such as bee hoon, fish slices, vegetables and fried shallots in a milky broth. The broth was tasty and flavourful. The sesame oil added on top further enhance the flavour of the broth.
Slice Fish Bee Hoon $5
As for the fish slices, they were sliced way too thinly. It was hard to get a good satisfactory bite of the fish. The fish texture was rough and tasted bland. Disappointing.
Even after we have finish our meal, there was still a long queue at the stall.

I doubt I will be going back any time soon with or without a queue as the fish was disappointing.

Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre)

Angel Horse Teochew Fish Soup is a stall located in Albert Centre Market & Food Centre near Bugis Junction which specialises in fish soup. If you are a regular at this hawker centre, you will notice that there is always a long queue that stretches from 8 to 10 people long at this stall during lunch / dinner time.
It is important to invest in a good freezer to keep the fish fresh if you are running a fish soup stall. One can expect to queue 20 to 30 minutes before being able to order.
Fish Soup $5.00 with Rice $0.50
The Fish Soup comes in $3.00 / $4.00 / $5.00. I ordered the $5.00 portion along with a bowl of rice $0.50
Fish Soup $5.00
The Fish Soup was clear and its ingredients include bitter gourd, tomato, seaweed, toufu and slices of fish.
There are 2 main factors in a bowl of fish soup. The first is the broth / soup and the second is the fish meat. The soup was clear, tasty and not salty. I am not sure how they make the soup, but from the taste, alot of effort and time should have been taken. Also, there are very small bits of salted fish and soya bean in the soup. No milk was added to artificially enhance the taste of the soup.

Several slices of fish was given. Each piece was soft and smooth. The fish was very fresh and one can taste the sweetness of the fish. I am glad that they did not slice the fish very thinly (like what some other stalls do).

In addition, the salted bean sauce and chilli padi given complemented each other very well. However, I saw no need for them as the fish was so fresh that I preferred just the original flavour. This stall serves a very good bowl of fish soup. One of the best Fish Soup I have had thus far; simple and good. It was certainly worth the waiting time. I will be be back for more! Give this a try when you are around the area.

Number 8 Red Grouper Soup 8号红石斑鱼汤

Number 8 Red Grouper Soup 8号红石斑鱼汤 specialises in serving fish soup. The stall first started operating in Woodlands before shifting over to Jalan Besar one month ago.

Menu
There are many fish soup stalls all over Singapore. But this stall is one of the few that I have encountered that servers such a wide variety of fish ranging from Red Grouper, Pomfret, Ang Gor Li, Batang Fish and Dory Fish. In addition, they also offers Fish Head and Fried Fish for some of the fish soups. If you think that is all, well you are wrong. They even have Seafood Soup and Prawn & La La Soup!

With so many choices, I had a hard time deciding what to order. In the end, I ordered the Bittergourd Red Grouper Bee Hoon.
Bitter Gourd Red Grouper Bee Hoon $8
Bitter Gourd Red Grouper Bee Hoon $8
The Bittergourd Red Grouper Bee Hoon came in a bowl filled with with generous amount of ingredients. There were lots of beehoon, slices of bittergourd, vegetable, red grouper meat topped with fried shallots and a few pieces (3 to be exact) of dried crispy fish.

I can't recall when I was given any dried crispy fish in a bowl of fish soup. The only one I can recall was the Bak Chor Mee at Hill Street Tai Hwa. The dried crispy fish added an extra oomph into the taste of the soup. The  bittergourds were sliced thinly and cooked well till it was soft. (I like it when my fish soup contains bittegourds. But sadly not every fish soup stalls have this)

Red Grouper fish meat
Several pieces of Red Grouper fish meat were given. What I like was that each piece was not sliced very thinly (as what some stalls does). In addition, the fish was very fresh! As for the soup, it was fantastic. So tasty and flavourful that I drank all of it. I seldom drink all the soup when eating fish soup as they frequently contained MSG and sodium (salt) in it. In this case, initially I had some worries that the soup might contain MSG. The good news is that even after a few hours after having drank the soup, I did not feel thirsty. I doubt that there is any MSG in it.

Despite the price being $8 (on the higher end of the spectrum), I must say that this is worth every single cent.   A very delicious bowl of fish soup with fresh fish, dried crispy fish and the soup was really very well done! Give this a try when you are in the area and you will know what I mean.

We ordered a Fried Fish Meat Mee Hoon and a Fried Red Snapper Fish Head Mee Hoon.
Look at what is given! This is for my fish head bones.

Although the place was packed, our dishes arrived within 15minutes.
Fried Fish Meat Mee Hoon $5.50
I only tried a spoonful of the Fried Fish Meat Mee Hoon. The soup based was similar to mine. The fried fish meat was fresh and not fishy at all.
Fried Red Snapper Fish Head Mee Hoon $6.80
The Fried Red Snapper Fish Head Mee Hoon's soup with milk added was sweet and tasty. The fish head meat was very fresh and well fried. Wish that more generous portion of fish head was given. But this was certainty worth it. Definitely will be back for more.

Tsui Wah Restaurant 翠華餐廳 (Hong Kong)

Tsui Wah Restaurant 翠華餐廳 has come a long way having first started in 1967. Today, this cha chaan teng has expanded with over 17 outlets in Hong Kong and has even ventured into Shanghai and Macau.

We were on our way to Yung Kee when we spotted Tsui Wah Restaurant located directly opposite Yung Kee Building. At Yung Kee, we had to take a queue number and were told to come back 1 hour later. As we were hungry, we decided to visit Tsui Wah Restaurant and shared 2 items before going back to Yung Kee.
There was no queue at Tsui Wah Restaurant. We were directed to the second level, where there was more sitting capacity. We noticed that even the second level was full. Luckily, a big group left just as we came in.

Level 2 filled to the brim
Look at how nicely decorated the restaurant is.

As we were in a rush and did not want to order too much, we decided to just order the two recommended dishes that was 'popping' out of the menu. The two dishes were the Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Rice Noodle in Fish Soup and Prawn Balls with Stirring Noodle in XO Sauce.
Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Rice Noodle in Fish Soup
The Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Rice Noodle in Fish Soup cost HK$29 (S$4.83). A healthy dish and the rice noodle is actually kway teow. The fish soup was fragrant and flavourful. Moreover, there was no fishy taste.
Prawn Balls with Stirring Noodle in XO Sauce
The Prawn Balls with Stirring Noodle in XO Sauce is priced at HK$45 (S$7.50). The noodle was QQ, but a tad too dry. The bonus was that the prawns were big, firm and very fresh! Delicious!
Milk Tea (cold)
Milk Tea (hot)
Despite the crowd, the service here was prompt and efficient. Overall, a good meal that achieved our aim of going somewhere with good and fast food without compromising our queue at Yung Kee and yet help fill our stomach with some food.

ps: Tsui Wah Restaurant is also famous for their crispy bun with condense milk.
