Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru) 2nd post

Curry Prawn in Indonesia Style 印尼虾 RM 30
Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 is a well known Chinese restaurant offering delicious food at affordable prices. It has several signature dishes, it's most famous signature dish is the Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken.

Teck Sing competitor is just next door (at the left of the restaurant) called Bamboo Restaurant which also specialises in serving paper wrapped chicken. Years ago, Bamboo Restaurant's version was more popular. However over the years, the standard has dropped. Currently, Teck Sing's paper wrapped chicken is more popular among the locals and Singaporeans. 
Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡  RM 26
Teck Sing's signature Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 aka Yao Cai Ji now cost RM 26. It used to cost just RM18 four years ago! The eatery uses kampung chicken which is wrapped in  a few pieces of thick superior paper and baked for several hours with various Chinese herbs. The chicken was incredibly fresh, soft, tender and juicy. It was so fork tender; the flesh fell part from the bones easily. So delicious and delectable! One of the best Yao Cai Ji I have ever had. A must order!
Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli RM10
The Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli  RM10 was very well executed. It was well-cooked and the Kang Kong was still crunchy. The Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli strangely was more sweet than spicy with the fragrance of garlic and shrimp. Despite that, this dish was so savoury and delicious that we polish it off within minutes. This is a common dish that is available at most eateries and yet Teck Sing has proven that their cooking technique is still one of the best.
Curry Prawn in Indonesia Style 印尼虾 RM 30
Another dish that we tried was the Curry Prawn in Indonesia Style 印尼虾 RM 30. Cooked in a claypot, it arrived pipping hot with several huge prawns in curry broth! The prawns were fresh as they were easy to deshell. Moreover, the meat was firm, succulent and sweet. The curry broth was spicy, fragrant and milky. It is best accompanied with plain rice!

Chomp Chomp Hai Wei Yuan Seafood BBQ 忠忠海味园BBQ海鲜烧烤 (Chomp Chomp Food Centre)


There are at least three stalls that sells barbecue (BBQ) seafood in Chomp Chomp Food Centre. Of these, I have tried two of the BBQ seafood stalls. And out of these two stalls, there's one which I always prefer to order from. The stall is Chomp Chomp Hai Wei Yuan Seafood BBQ 忠忠海味园BBQ海鲜烧烤 (what a mouthful). I shall call it Hai Wei Yuan to keep it short.
Hai Wei Yuan is easy to spot as its at the entrance of Chomp Chomp. In fact, it is located at the left most corner at the entrance and has a unit number #01-01. This stall is fairly popular and you can expect a waiting time of at least 30 minutes (even on a weekday evening). There are tables directly in front of this stall. However, my advice would be to sit elsewhere. This is because the BBQing of the sambal chilli can cause the air around this stall to be very uncomfortable.
The seafood such as stingray, crayfish, lala clams, gong gong and cockles were displayed on a bed of ice. We ordered three dishes and two bowls of rice from Hai Wei Yuan . The three dishes were Sambal Kang Kong $8, Sambal Lala $8 and BBQ (Sambal) Stingray $12. The two bowls of rice cost $1. Payment is made only after the food is served. We waited  for around 40 minutes before our food was served (Food for thought: it was a Thursday night. Can't imagine what the waiting time would be if it was a weekend or Friday night).
Sambal Kang Kong $8
Although the Sambal Kang Kong $8 served on a piece of banana leaf had been highly raved about, I thought that it was average. I had eaten better ones elsewhere. The Kang Kong was well cooked and retained a nice crunchines. However, the dish as a whole was too spicy and was not tasty enough.

We thought that the Sambal Lala Clams was unique. The lala clams were normal, but what stood out was the sauce. It had the right balance of spiciness, sweetness and saltiness (due to the lala clams). What made the sauce so unique was that it had this slight peanutish flavour that made it aromatic and addictive. Shiok! We were scrapping whatever sauce there was and adding it onto our rice.

Needless to say, we always squeeze the lime to up the flavour by a notch or two. The BBQ Stingray was not bad. The sambal chilli spread was spicy and fragrant while the Stingray was tender, soft and more importantly fresh. However, a grouse which I had was that the stingray was too thin - not meaty considering the price. Having said that, credit must be given to the stall owner as he bothered to add slices of onions on top of the BBQ Stingray to enhance the flavour. I polished off the whole stingray (literally) including its skeleton (soft bone) which contains cartilage which is good for the joints.

Overall, the food from Hai Wei Yuan was delish. Even though we had to wait so long for the food and the price seems to be on the higher end for a hawker centre, I would still be back. Reason being the prices at the other stalls are the same. In addition, I am a foodie, I am definitely coming back to Chomp Chomp for all the other yummy and sinful food.

Whole Earth Peranakan Thai Vegetarian Restaurant (Tanjong Pagar)

Whole Earth Peranakan Thai Vegetarian Restaurant (oh such a mouthful!) is as its name suggest a restaurant that serves Peranakan-Thai style Vegetarian cuisine - such a unique concept. Their concept includes using healthy and fresh ingredients to bring out the flavours targeting healthy freaks individuals, providing a healthier choice to customers.

Whole Earth first opened its doors for business in 2003 (this year marks its 10th anniversary). The restaurant is located at Peck Seah Street within a minute walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT Exit A. It's hard to miss this place as they used the huge wall to their advantage advertising their restaurant. 
8 Treasure Cooling Tea with Rosehip
The 8 Treasure Cooling Tea with Rosehip was not bad. But to my friends, they mentioned that it smell and tasted like medicine (cough mixture). So a word of caution, not everyone would like this. 

All the dishes that we ordered and ate were their best sellers.
Sambal Kang Kong $12
The Sambal Kang Kong was well cooked and was still crunchy. The unique belachan sauce in this dish stimulated the different senses of taste (sweet, spicy and salty), to its extreme at times. It was very spicy and yet salty at the same time. I suspect that they had added Marmite to it, and if they did, they have added too much of it. If this dish was less salty, it would have been perfect. Interestingly, this dish was incredibly addictive, I wonder if it was the Marmite flavour (salty) or spiciness that made it so addictive. Beats me.. 
Oatmeal Tofu with Curry Leaves $15
The chunks of tofu in the Oatmeal Tofu with Curry Leaves were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. An addition point to note was that it was not oily. However, the oats were a disappointment. They practically tasteless. Somehow the flavours of the curry leaves was not brought out. On a side note, the Oat Tofu with Curry Leaves looks uncanny similar to Cereal Prawns.
Broccoli with Braised Monkeyhead Mushroom $19
As the name of this dish suggests, the Broccoli with Braised Monkeyhead Mushroom was made up of mushroomhead mushrooms (as mock meat). It was then braised together with broccoli, tang gui herbs and wolfberry. It was well executed and quite a decent dish (though not fantastic)
Penang Rendang $19
Similar, mushroom was used as mockmeat in the Penang Rendang. This was another spicy dish, thought not as spicy as the sambal kangkong. In terms of taste, I thought that it was quite decently executed and similar to those found elsewhere (which uses mockmeat).
Nyonya Curry $19
Leaving the best for the last, the Nyonya Curry was outstanding. 8 hours of preparation and cooking was required for this dish. This dish was made of shiitake mushrooms (as mock meat) and potato in a thick Nyonya style curry sauce. The curry was incredibly flavourful and appetising. The potato and mockmeat tasted wonder in this sauce! Taste as good, if not as even better than other Nyonya Curry found elsewhere. The curry goes well with steamed rice! Yummy!

One of the aim of Whole Earth was to create a place where vegetarians could bring their friends non-vegetarian friends to. I must say that the food was impressive. Some of them not only taste just like the real one, but was even better! You may have noticed by now that mushrooms are commonly used as mockmeat by Whole Earth instead of using soybased or flour mockmeat.

Price wise I would say that it was on the expensive end and the portions were small. The ambiance and environment of the restaurant made it difficult to chat as it amplify and hence cause the place to be very noisy. This was despite the fact that it was only half full. Overall, I would conclude that, the vegetarian food served here are unique and quite good (in terms of taste).

761 Yishun Seafood - Cze Char (2nd Post)

Another visit to 761 Yishun Seafood. 761 Yishun Seafood is a Cze Char stall located in a coffeeshop at  Blk 761 at Yishun Street 72. The eatery has been operating for a very long time; 26 years!

This post covers a consolidation of the dishes I ate over 3 occasions. 
As usual I visited this Cze Char stall during dinner time on all 3 occasions. Be prepared to wait around 10 to 30 minutes during dinner time as almost half the people at this coffee shop orders from this Cze Char stall.  
Hot Plate Beancurd $8
The Hot Plate Beancurd served sizzling hot was outstanding. Generous amount of prawns and beancurds with eggs at the bottom. The sauce that was drizzled over the dish was robust and flavourful accompanied with a spicy after taste. The spiciness was just nice for us (We requested for it to be less spicy). Furthermore, the sauce complemented perfectly with plain rice. 
Bittergourd Omelette $5
The Bittergourd Omelette also did not disappoint. For just $5, I was surprised that such a big serving of omelette was given. The omelette was well fried; big, fluffy and soft with the ideal thickness (not too thin, not too thick). The slices of bittergourd in it were well sliced at the ideal thickness. It was well cooked, did not hard and had no raw taste in it.

Wish that thy could cut down the amount of oil required for this dish. Surprisingly, the Seafood Omelette that  I had at Chong Kei Hoi Sin Yeh Mei Fan Tim 忠記海鮮魚翅飯店 (Macau) is still one of those which was not oily. Ironic as I would have thought HK/China would have had used more oil in their cooking. (no offence to anyone)

The Sweet and Sour Pork was average.

Ginger Onion Diced Chicken was average. The different flavours of the ingredients were infused into the chicken. However, it did not sees to appeal much to me.

When ordering Prawn Paste Chicken, customers can choose between the wings or meat. In this case, we chose meat. A decent dish. The prawn paste batter was not bad, just that in some parts, the batter was too thick. Another plus will be that it was not oily and inside, it was juicy and tender.

On another occasion, we ordered the Prawn Paste Chicken in the form of chicken wings. It was so delicious! (Likely to be more biased as its chicken wings haha..) Anyway, I prefer this compared to meat. Crispy on the outside and inside it was piping hot, tender and juicy! Shiok. 
Sambal Kang Kong $6
The Sambal Kang Kong was yummy. It was not overly spicy and the kang kong still retained a nice crunchiness. 
Oyster Sauce Spinach $6

The Spinach and Baby Kai Lan were both executed in the same way; with oyster sauce. Both were well fried and still retained the crunchiness. A simple dish that did not disappoint, if they were to cut down the saltiness by just a bit, it would be perfect.
'Jiu Qi' Soup $4
Shared the 'Jiu Qi' Soup among 3 persons. Anyone care to enlighten me on the meaning of 'Jiu Qi'? Is it a vegetable? Anyway this soup was very tasty and not overly salty. Filled with a wide variety of different ingredients such as vegetable, carrots, button mushrooms, straw mushrooms, squid, prawns, fish slices and egg, this is so value for money. Moreover, there was still more than half the amount of soup left after scooping it in the 3 bowls.

The food here may not be mind blowing, but it was surprisingly good and affordable. Good job!

Tung Lok Seafood 同乐酒家 (Orchard Central)

Tung Lok Seafood 同乐酒家 is part of the TungLok Group which has manages more than 40 restaurants specialising in different types of cuisines under its portfolio. The Tung Lok Seafood restaurant specialises in Singapore style seafood. 


Refillable hot Chinese Tea at $1.50 each
Appetiser - Pickle Radish $3
Crispy Fish Skin with Salted Egg Yolk $8
Crispy Fish Skin with Salted Egg Yolk is a must try! The salted egg yolk well mixed with fish skin was fried with curry leaves and slices of chilli padi. So crunchy, tasty and savoury. Sinfully Delicious and addicitive! 
Braised House Special Beancurd with Nameko Mushrooms and Vegetables $18
The Braised House Special Beancurd with Nameko Mushrooms and Vegetables was surprisingly good. A  well-executed dish all the way from the cooking to the presentation of the dish. The tofu was smooth, soft and flavourful. Moreover, the sauce was just right as it did not overwhelm the different flavours of the ingredients and yet provided sufficient flavour to the vegetables. 
Oven-baked Pork Rib with Chef's Special Sauce $10
The Oven-baked Pork Rib with Chef's Special Sauce was average. Nothing great to shout about except that the meat came off easily. 
Deep Fried Prawns with Wasabi-Mayo Sauce $26
The prawns in the Deep Fried Prawns with Wasabi-Mayo Sauce were huge, firm and fresh. However, I thought that the wasabi-mayo sauce coating the prawn was forgettable and the wasabi intensity (spiciness) seemed to have been toned down. I did not find myself longing for another piece of the prawn.  
Sambal Kang Kong $14
The Sambal Kang Kong was outstanding and well-fried. The sambal belacan with hae bee hiam (spicy  dried shrimp) was spicy, fragrant and not oily. In additional, it was extremely addictive. Even though the Kang Kong was finished, I could not resist using getting whatever sambal belacan that was left on the plate.

When we ordered the Yam Paste (Orh Nee) with Gingko Nuts served in Young Coconut, we were informed that we would need to wait at last 15 minutes as it is prepared and steamed upon order. It was well worth the wait.

This is unlike the traditional teochew style yam paste. Thick fragrant yam paste with gingko. Surprisingly, the coconut flavour did not overwhelm the taste of this dish. The coconut flesh could be easily can be easily scrapped.

Bei Sheng Seafood Restaurant 北腾泰国小食 (Yishun)

Bei Sheng Seafood Restaurant 北腾泰国小食 located at Yishun Avenue 5 has been operating for quite a long time. The restaurant specialises in serving Thai cuisine. I used to patronise the restaurant frequently a long time ago (7 years ago), however after that I stopped going there as it started getting ridiculously crowded. Back then the restaurant used to be called 'Bei Sheng Lou'

The restaurant has both indoors and outdoors seating. Indoor is air-conditioned and frequently packed. Outdoor is quite well-ventilated and easier to get seats. 

This post will be a consolidation of pictures and reviews from several visits.

Once you have ordered, normally, you do not need to wait too long even though there is a full house. They serve the dishes very fast!
Pineapple Fried Rice
A better closed up from a recent trip
The Pineapple Fried Rice was delicious. Very well fried; fragrance of pineapple was evenly mixed in the rice. Moreover, there chinese sausage was added to enhanced the taste of the dish. It was topped with pork floss that added flavour and also a crunchy twist to the dish.
Fried Tang Hoon
Give the Fried Tang Hoon a skip, not worth ordering.
Deep Fried Cuttlefish 
Deep Fried Cuttlefish was average, nothing great about it. But kudos to them that this dish arrived piping hot, was crispy and not greasy.
Thai Deep Fried Fish Delight
The Thai Deep Fried Fish Delight is a dish that I order every time I visit Bei Sheng Seafood Restaurant. The fish was deep fried till it was very crispy yet not oily. Dipping it into the sour and spicy sauce heightens the oomph of this dish to  a whole new level. A dish that I would recommend!
Chicken with Dried Chilli
The Chicken with Dried Chilli was another dish that I did not like, did not suit my taste bud.
Fried Chilli Beancurd
The Fried Chilli Beancurd was a dish recommended to us by the staff. It was disappointing, I did not like this dish one bit. The different flavours of the ingredients did not get infused together. It was as if each ingredient was cooked separately and then added on the hot plate just before serving.
Baby Kai Lan  with Oyster Sauce
The Baby Kai Lan with Oyster Sauce was very well cooked and still crunchy. The only downside is that it was slightly on the salty end.
Vegetable with Abalone Mushroom
The Vegetable with Abalone Mushroom was well cooked too. This dish suits my palate (most likely due to the abalone mushroom added).
Sambal Kang Kong
The Sambal Kang Kong was great. Well fried, retained the crunchiness of the vegetable. The sambal chilli used in it was irresistible.
Tom Yum Soup
Most Thai restaurants are well-known for their Tom Yum Soup. But in this case I would beg to differ. The Tom Yum Soup was lousy. It was sour and salty, not spicy. Give this a skip.
Lime Juice
Refreshing Lime Juice.

OverallBei Sheng Seafood Restaurant has a mixture of hits and misses. It is very affordable (wallet-friendly) and one of the cheapest Thai restaurant around. Order the right dishes, you will find this very value for money and a great meal.

I do believe it is because of its very affordable price, that is why they are able to pull in such a big crowd. If you live nearby, give this place a try (my guess is you would have probably heard of this place if you stay nearby). 

Ps: When the bill comes do, not be surprised if the person collecting the money tell you (in chinese) 'the meal cost $31, $30 will be sufficient.' This happens quite frequently. Regulars will know what I meant. Whatever, the intend of this is, from a customer perspective, this is a nice gesture.
