Yung Kee Restaurant 鏞記酒家 (Hong Kong)

Yung Kee Restaurant is a Chinese Cantonese restaurant reowned for its Roasted Goose and Century Eggs. It has been reported that they sell as many as 300 Geese per day!
Yung Kee restaurant is located along Wellington Street, 5 minutes walk from Central MTR Exit D2. It is located in Yung Kee Building (yes, they owned the building!). If you are lost, ask the locals!
We were directed to level 2 where we saw a large crowd of people gathering around a lady who was in charge of giving out queue numbers and assigning seats. We were assigned a number and told to come back 1 hour later. We decided to go to Tsui Wah Restaurant located opposite for some bites before coming back as we were starving.

When we came back, I spotted this sign saying waiting area. True enough, Yung Kee has dedicated a corner as a waiting area with seats and magazines on a rack. We waited just like everyone else. Luckily for us, we managed to get a table soon after coming in. In total, the time when we got the queue number to the time we were assigned a table was 45minutes.

Chrysanthemum tea (per person) HK$12 (S$2) to quench our thirst. It comes in a pot which is refillable.
Century Egg and Pickled Ginger (per person) 
The famous Century Egg served with Pickled Ginger (per person) at HK$10 (S$1.66). Each person gets half a slice of the century egg. This appetizer looks different from those in Singapore. It is the best century egg I have eaten. So smooth, so soft, so tasty! Now I know why some people take the trouble to bring this back to Singapore!
Roasted Goose (Half)

Braised Soya Beans beneath the Roasted Goose.
The award winning Roasted Goose (half) HK$230 (S$38.33). Fragrant and flavourful roasted goose that was crispy on the outside yet soft, tender and juicy on the inside. There were braised soya beans beneath the roasted goose that soaked up all the drippings from the goose making it fragrant and flavourful. Description is pointless for this dish, you got to try this yourself!
Vegetable with Oyster Sauce
Vegetable with Oyster Sauce HK$75 (S$12.50). Honestly I have no idea what this vegetable is. The vegetable was big and fresh, paired well with the oyster sauce.
Chinese 'Waxed' Sausage & Preserved Fresh Goose Liver Sausage 
We also ordered the Chinese 'Waxed' Sausage (lap cheong) & Preserved Fresh Goose Liver Sausage. The Chinese 'Waxed' Sausage was delicious. But the Preserved Fresh Goose Liver Sausage was too adventurous for me.
Fried Rice in Yangzhou Style
Fried Rice in Yangzhou Style (Large Portion) HK$145 (S$24.16). Lots of ingredients (shrimps, char siew, egg, scallions) and was well fried. Certainly another dish to try.

From this meal, I can conclude that a stay in Hong Kong is not completed without stopping over at Yung Kee. The 'die die must try' dishes are the Roasted Goose and Century Eggs. The food here is definitely worth the wait!
As we were leaving, we saw this sign that states that all the roasted geese have been sold out!

If you know when you are coming over, do ensure that you make a reservation for not only a table but also the goose!

Tsui Wah Restaurant 翠華餐廳 (Hong Kong)

Tsui Wah Restaurant 翠華餐廳 has come a long way having first started in 1967. Today, this cha chaan teng has expanded with over 17 outlets in Hong Kong and has even ventured into Shanghai and Macau.

We were on our way to Yung Kee when we spotted Tsui Wah Restaurant located directly opposite Yung Kee Building. At Yung Kee, we had to take a queue number and were told to come back 1 hour later. As we were hungry, we decided to visit Tsui Wah Restaurant and shared 2 items before going back to Yung Kee.
There was no queue at Tsui Wah Restaurant. We were directed to the second level, where there was more sitting capacity. We noticed that even the second level was full. Luckily, a big group left just as we came in.

As we were in a rush and did not want to order too much, we decided to just order the two recommended dishes that was 'popping' out of the menu.The two dishes were the Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Rice Noodle in Fish Soup and Prawn Balls with Stirring Noodle in XO Sauce.
Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Rice Noodle in Fish Soup
The Fish Balls & Fish Cakes with Rice Noodle in Fish Soup cost HK$29 (S$4.83). A healthy dish and the rice noodle is actually kway teow. The fish soup was fragrant and flavourful. Moreover, there was no fishy taste.
Prawn Balls with Stirring Noodle in XO Sauce
The Prawn Balls with Stirring Noodle in XO Sauce is priced at HK$45 (S$7.50). The noodle was QQ, but a tad too dry. The bonus was that the prawns were big, firm and very fresh! Delicious!

Despite the crowd, the service here was prompt and efficient. Overall, a good meal that achieved our aim of going somewhere with good and fast food without compromising our queue at Yung Kee and yet help fill our stomach with some food.

ps: Tsui Wah Restaurant is also famous for their crispy bun with condense milk.

Starliner Diner at Tomorrowland (Hong Kong Disneyland)

As mentioned in my previous post, we had lunch at Comet Cafe. For dinner, again we wanted a meal which would not take up too much time. Hence, we went to Starliner Diner at Tomorrowland. Starliner Diner with a seating capacity of 800 is the largest service restaurant in Disneyland. The interior and exterior of the Starliner Diner are decorated to give patrons a spaceport dining experience.

All Combo/Set are served with French Fries or Chicken Flavoured Rice along with a regular cup of Soft Drinks/Lemon Tea/Hot Chocolate/Hot Tea/Hot Coffee.
This reminds me of fast food joint. There was a short queue when ordering. But once you order, the items you order will be immediately served to you as everything is prepared.Similar concept to fast food restaurants.

Beef Burger with Cheese Combo HK$70 (S$11.66) with French Fries and Hot Tea. Surprisingly, the food (french fries and burger) was still hot as if it was just cooked when it was clearly cooked before hand and placed at the counter outside the kitchen. Well, my guess is the turnover is too fast.

The French Fries with slightly thicker cut compare to Mcdonalds. It was slightly on the salty end. The Beef patty in the Beef Burger was soft, tender and juicy. Delicious! Ordering hot tea was a plus as I could refilled more hot water into it and keep myself warm during the cold weather.

Chicken Teriyaki Burger Combo HK$70 (S$11.66) with French Fries and Hot Chocolate. The Chicken in the Chicken Teriyaki Burger was tender. Felt that too much teriyaki sauce was added as the sauce was dripping all over. Other than that, it was quite a nice burger.

In terms of price, it is of course more expensive as we are in Disneyland. But this meal was so much better than our lunch and certainty more value for money. Moreover, the other nmore upscale restaurants had long queues. Whereas at Starliner Diner with 800 seats, there's no need to wait. We made the right choice =)

Comet Cafe at Tomorrowland (Hong Kong Disneyland)

Went to Hong Kong Disneyland! My first time here. The easiest way to Hong Kong Disneyland is via MTR! There is a dedicated Disney Resort Line from Sunny Bay Station! How convenient!

Our first destination in Disneyland was to have a fast and light lunch. As there was long queues at restaurants, we skipped that. We came to Tomorrowland where we saw Comet Cafe. We deicded to eat at Comet Cafe. It was like an outdoor food court with just 3 stalls. There was plenty of seats available and with no queue.

The price of the food here are marked up. I am sure it is not just Comet Cafe, all the eateries here will have their food marked up too.
Braised Duo of Mushrooms and Marrow Cucumber with Rice
Braised Duo of Mushrooms and Marrow Cucumber with Rice HK$58 (S$9.66) from Fiery Wok stall. Really a mushroom dish. The rice was hard. Luckily, the sauce help to soften to soften the rice. Did not like the taste of the dish. 
BBQ Pork with Rice Glazed with Maltose Syrup
BBQ Pork with Rice Glazed with Maltose Syrup HK$65 (S$10.83) from Classic BBQ stall. Another dish which was so-so.

No wonder there was so few people eating at Comet Cafe. But we achieved our aim of having a quick bite without queuing so that we could have more time for rides.

Chilled Beancurd Recipe

Last year (2011), Lao Ban Beancurd has lead the craze on Chilled Beancurd. Today, there are several similar stalls such as 51 Soya Bean, QQ Soya Bean Curd and many more popping up. All selling the same type of chilled beancurd!

Many people online have frequently been searching for the 'Lao Ban Beancurd recipe'. Just last month, the recipe was shared on edmw. With that, I went about trying to make it too. 
Phoon Huat's 'Jelly Man Instant Jelly Powder (200g) $4.90
The trick in making the chilled beancurd is the Phoon Huat's 'Red Man Instant Jelly Powder'. I bought the small bottle, 200g at $4.90.
Ingredients Required
Other than the fact that the Instant Jelly Powder can be bought from Phoon Huat, the rest of the ingredients can be bought from NTUC. (Not all outlets in NTUC has Polleney Soya Bean Milk Powder)

Items required: 
1) Pot
2) Whisk
3) Sieve
4) Measuring Cup
5) Measuring Teaspoon (tsp) and Tablespoon (tbsp) or Measuring Scale
6) Bowls or Plastic Containers
*as I do not have measuring scale I will estimate the number of tsp or tbsp required.

To make Soya Milk (3 bowls):
60g of Polleney Soya Bean Milk Powder (2 tbsp + 1 tsp)
30g of Unisoy Soya Bean Milk Powder
700ml of Water
Stir to ensure that all the powder are dissolved. Ensure that there are no lumps.

To make Chilled Beancurd:
700ml of Soya Milk (or Drinho/Vitasoy/Yeo's/Seasons Soya Milk)
30g of Nestle Coffeemate Coffee Creamer (6 packets)
30g of Sugar to taste (not required if using carton-ed Soya Bean Milk) (2 tbsp)
14g of Phoon Huat's Instant Jelly Powder (2.5 tsp)

Steps:
1) Heat the Soya Milk in low heat till it is hot (Do not boil)
2) Add in coffee creamer and stir till it is fully dissolved
3) Add in Sugar and stir till it is fully dissolved
4) Do a taste check for sweetness level
5) Add in Instant Jelly Powder and stir till it is fully dissolved
6) Sieve out the bubbles
7) Pour into 3 bowls and leave to cool
8) Put in fridge for at least 3 hours and after that it is ready. Enjoy the Beancurd

Tips:
1) Keep stiring to ensure that the ingredients are fully dissolved. Using a whisk is better compared to a spoon/fork/chopsticks. This is to ensure that the Beancurd will not have 2 layers. (which was what happen to my first attempt)
2) Too much Instant Jelly Powder will result in the Beancurd being too hard (which was what happen to my first attempt)
3) Ensure you do a taste test before adding in Instant Jelly Powder. Add more sugar if required.
4) Pure Soya Bean Extract from Vitasoy did not really work as the taste was not right

My own chilled beancurd using the above recipe. Smooth, jelly-like and silky. Very similar to 51 Soya Bean taste. But not Lao Ban standard.

Yee Shun Milk Company 義順牛奶公司 (Hong Kong)

Yee Shun Milk Company 義順牛奶公司  is a well established and well known dessert restaurant in Macau. Subsequently, it ventured into Hong Kong and opened 4 outlets. Yee Shun Milk Company specialises in milk based dessert, is famous for their Steam Milk in Two Films and Steam Milk with Ginger Juice. We were not actively looking for this place. But when we happen to walk pass this outlet at Nathan Road (near Yau Ma Tei MTR) , we decided to enter and try it for ourselves.

Chiller with bowls of Steam Milk. Kind of remind me of the fridge with lots and lots of Lao Ban Beancurd.
Typical cha chaan teng layout. Slightly more than half of the tables was occupied. It was around 930pm to 10pm, most patrons must be coming here for dessert.
Steam Milk in Two Films (hot)
Steam Milk in Two Films is priced at HK$23 (S$3.83) is one of their signature dish. As the name of this item suggests, there is a thin piece of film/skin on the surface. The steam milk was smooth and sweet.
Steam Milk with Ginger Juice (hot)
The Steam Milk with Ginger Juice is priced at HK$24 (S$4). It was smooth with a ginger taste. However, the ginger taste was way too strong for my liking and overwhelmed any sweetness if any. I chanced upon this blog with a recipe for ginger milk curd (or should I say Science).

There are many other flavours of steamed milk you can try such as chocolate, almond, coffee or even red bean.
Egg Sandwich
Egg Sandwich priced at HK$15 (S$2.50). Nothing fantastic about this. Very normal with nothing inside except egg. I have no idea why this cost $2.50.

I wonder what is the hype about Yee Shun Milk Company. Their 2 signature dishes (Steam Milk in Two Films and Steam Milk with Ginger Juice) are really just average when compared to Australia Dairy Company. Will I be back for this? I really doubt.

Lee Keung Kee North Point Eggette/ Egg Waffle 利強記北角雞蛋仔 (Hong Kong)

Lee Keung Kee North Point Eggette is a stall that sells Hong Kong Style Egg Waffle 雞蛋仔. The egg waffle is a popular snack in Hong Kong, a honeycomb shaped waffle that is crispy on the outside and hallow and soft on the inside. It is made out of flour, eggs, sugar and evaporated cooked using an iron mold.
Notice the many pictures of celebrities who patronise the stall and also the numerous food reviews. There was a small crowd gathering around this stall as a result, this stall caught our attention.
The egg waffle cost HK$15 per piece. If you buy 2, it will cost HK$28.

Although there was a small crowd gathering at the stall, we received our Egg Waffle within 1 minute of ordering. The crowd ensure that the egg waffle you purchase is fresh out of the 'oven'. The egg waffle is crispy on the outside. Inside, it is soft, moist and fluffy. It was fun plucking the 'eggs' off and eat them. In terms of taste, I felt that it was bland. It is supposed to be slightly sweet.

For me I started 2012 by having steamboat and also experimented making a chilled beancurd (recall Lao Ban Beancurd / 51 Soya Bean)
