Jack's Place (Marina Square)

Back to Jack's Place again. Jack's Place a restaurant chain specialises in serving affordable western cuisine such as steaks. The restaurant first start back in 1966 and now has 15 outlets in Singapore and evolved to include restaurants with other concepts such as Eatzi Gourmet, Seafood Harvest, Brewbaker's Kitchen & Bar, Hoshigaoka and Jack's Place under the JP Pepperdine Group. It's newest concept restaurant is the Kkongdon Korea BBQ, that offers Korean BBQ cuisine.
Exterior
The exterior of Jack's Place restaurant at Marina Square. All their outlets have the same similar exterior with the same corporate colours.
Interior
Even the interior is consistent. Same type of furnishing decoration. Classy modern furnishing and ambience with its signature white and green table cloth. Nostalgic!

Kudos to their marketing and branding team for keeping a consistent image at all 15 outlets. Makes me feel so comfortable despite being at a different outlet.

Spotted something new among their decorations. Nice touch. Cute design of animal cut outs in their corporate colour.
Daily Set Lunch Menu
Before we stepped in, we already know what we would be ordering. Its the N.Z. Ribeye Steak with Brown Sauce ($16) from the Executive Set Lunch which comes along with Soup of the Day, Garlic Bread, Day's Dessert and Coffee/Tea.
Garlic Bread
Two slices of Garlic Bread, one for each of us.
Soup of the Day
The Soup of the Day was carrot, potato, leek and chicken soup. It came piping hot. The soup was filled with the natural flavours of the ingredients. The chunks of potatoes, carrots and leeks were well cooked; soft yet retaining the flavours. The chicken chunks in it was surprisingly tender. Souperlicious Soup of the Day!
Executive Set Lunch: NZ Ribeye Steak with Brown Sauce $16
The steaks at Jack's Place are served sizzling on a hot plate. Hence, whenever we hear the sizzling sound coming out from the kitchen, we will turn and keep a look out (anticipating) for ours.

As expected, the piping hot sizzling NZ Ribeye Steak with Brown Sauce was served on the hot plate with seasonal vegetables and a baked potato. Do note, the hot plate is well... hot, touch the wooden parts instead if you need to shift the plate.
Executive Set Lunch: NZ Ribeye Steak with Brown Sauce $16
I requested for my steak to be cooked 'medium' so that it will be soft and somewhat firm. The brown sauce was 'darn' good and complemented the steak perfectly.

The seasonal vegetables served consisted of slices of carrots, radish and french beans. The carrots and radish were soft but the french beans were a tad too hard. A healthy side dish as no oil was used. I believed they were blanched and cooked in hot water.
Executive Set Lunch: NZ Ribeye Steak with Brown Sauce $16
Baked Potato topped with Sour Cream sauce, Chicken Bacon bits and Spring Onions. I like how Jack's Place executed this as the potato was moist and soft on the inside. Moreover, the chicken bits were fragrant. If I did not know, I would have thought that this was pork bacon bits.
Day's Dessert with Tea
Concluded the meal with Day's Dessert and tea.

Overall, a fulfilling and satisfying meal. Still my favourite place for an affordable and decent steak. In terms of service, the waiter and waitress were prompt. In addition, one of the staff came over and asked if the steak was cooked to our expectations. I did feedback to her that the steak was to our liking and that the french beans were a tad too hard. A little softer would have been ideal. Furthermore, feedback to her that it was a great meal thus far. I noticed that she also did the like wise for other customers. It was a nice gesture and I was impressed with her service.

ps: I always ask for extra brown sauce. It comes with no extra charge! Yummy!

Rasa Sayang Western Food 啦莎沙央西餐 (Ang Mo Kio)

Rasa Sayang Western Food 啦莎沙央西餐 is a Western food stall located at the S11 at Ang Mo Kio Central (next to Jubilee). This western stall is one of the most popular stall in the hawker centre due to its  quality, generous portions and affordable prices. It has been around for a long time, since I was studying in junior college, that was at least 10 years ago!
It has been at least 2 years since I stepped into the S11 again. With this visit, I knew I had to try the western food. It was good to know that the stall still exists. There was a short queue; customers waiting to order.
Menu
Once you have ordered, (remember to take note of your table number) you can go back to your seat and order a drink while waiting for the food to arrive.
Chicken Chop with Black Pepper Sauce $5.80
Despite the many orders in front of me, I got my food within 15 minutes, which was fast! I thought that I would need to wait for at least half an hour.

The Chicken Chop with Black Pepper Sauce was served with Garlic Bread, Fries, Baked Beans and  Coleslaw. A big, thick, juicy chunk of chicken chop was given. I do vaguely remember the chicken chop given was much bigger last time. But well, I can't complain much as this was still bigger than those served elsewhere at other western stalls. The chicken chop was well-marinated and grilled. I thought that the black pepper sauce was just nice. Not too salty and not overly pepperish.

As for the fries and baked beans, they were normal. The coleslaw deserve a mention, it was fresh and crunchy. Moreover, there was no artificial taste to it. *thumbs up*

Not mind blowing, just an average Chicken Chop with Black Pepper Sauce. The ingredients given were fresh and generous. It used to be better (in taste and portion) last time. Nevertheless, this is still value for money!

Vanilla Pastry and Bakery (Alexandra Retail Centre)

Vanilla Pastry and Bakery is a shop selling Muffins, Cup Cakes, Swiss Roll, Choux Pastry and Cakes & Mini French Pastry. It is located in the newly opened Alexandra Retail Centre (shopping mall) which is just next PSA Building, NOL Building and Mapletree Business City, a 5 minutes walk away from Labrador Park MRT Station. With the sheltered walkway, it was a breeze walking over from the MRT station as there was no need to worry about rain, sun or even cars.
Back to the food. Vanilla Pastry and Bakery is simple; no-frills and unpretentious compared to the other shops next to it.
The many different types of muffins, cakes and pastries displayed. The muffins start from just $1 and the most expensive muffin cost just $1.20.
Double Chocolate Muffin and Banana Walnut Muffin are their top 2 bestsellers!
More variety of muffins.
Clockwise from Top Right: Double Chocolate, Oreo, Banana Walnut, Orange Chocolate Chips,
I bought a box of muffins back home. Five muffins for just $5.60. That's very value for money considering that I am buying this from a shopping mall.
Double Chocolate Muffin $1.20
Banana Walnut Muffin $1.20
Oreo Muffin $1.00
Orange Chocolate Chip Muffin $1.00

I quite like the Vanilla Pastry and Bakery's muffins. They balanced the texture and density of the cake pretty well. Moist and not dry. In addition, not too fluffy and not too dense, not too heavy. In terms of flavour, it was not overly sweet. Overall, the muffins may be mind blowing, but they were decent. For this price, you are unlikely to find such delectable muffins in any other shopping malls.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka (Orchard Cuppage Terrace)

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is a Japanese ramen chain, started by Hitoshi Hatanaka in 1988, in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. It all began because Hitoshi Hatanaka was not satisfied with the taste of a ramen he had at a ramen shop. Hence, he used his own recipe and started off small with only 9 seats and one item on the menu. Today, almost 25 years later, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka operates 54 ramen restaurants worldwide in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Canada as well as United States of America.
So what made them so successful? Read on to find out.
Visited the outlet at Orchard Cuppage Terrace, next to OG Orchard Point and Centrepoint. Although it was a weekend afternoon, the restaurant was only half full, with plenty of seats available. There were more seats available outdoors compared to indoors (where it is air-conditioned).

Chawanmushi $3.50
The Chawanmushi; steamed egg pudding with salmon roe was impressive. It was very smooth and wobbly. In terms of taste, it was amazingly aromatic and tasty! One of the better Chawanmushi I have had. Reminds me of the one from Shin Yuu Japanese Restaurant.
Shin-Aji Shoyu Ramen $3.50
I ordered the Shin-Aji Shoyu Ramen. The ramen (noodle) was quite good. Thin, curly and chewy with a smooth texture. More the ramen was springy (QQ) springy and not soggy. The broth was clear, rich and robust. Light brown in colour because soy sauce was used (hence the word 'Shoyu'). It was so aromatic with sweetness and saltiness well-balanced.

Three big pieces of Char Siew were given. They sliced at the ideal thickness for me to get a good bite on it; not too thinly sliced. The Char Siew was incredibly tender with the right ratio of meat and fats that provided it with a melt in the mouth sensation. The bamboo shoots were crunchy providing a good texture to this bowl of ramen.

The Flavored Egg / Ajitsuke (Hanjuku) Tamago / Japanese Runny Egg was perfectly cooked. Firm on the outside and yet inside, it was so soft with almost all its yolk (molten) oozing out. One of the best I around here in Singapore. If you are wondering how you can make this on your own, click here for the recipe.

All in all, the Shin-Aji Shoyu Ramen was well executed  All the ingredients used in it were superb! It was a joy savouring and slurping this bowl of ramen.
Awase-Aji (Mixed Soup Ramen) $14
Awase-Aji (Mixed Soup Ramen) $14
The partner ordered the Awase-Aji; a mixed soup ramen, served with a bowl of Japanese rice topped with crunchy fried bits had a combination of salt, soy sauce and soybean in its broth. After finishing the ramen, the Japanese rice can be added into the soup.
After this meal, I know why there has been so many rave reviews of Ramen Santouka. It's ramen is truly outstanding. Looks like this is the Best Ramen in Singapore thus far. It overtakes Nantsuttei (Parco Marina Bay) as my favourite Japanese Ramen restaurant. Forget about Ippudo and the Ramen stalls at Bugis+ Ramen Champion in the meantime. Ramen Santouka is the place for a decent bowl of Japanese ramen!

The Naked Fish Shoppe (Yio Chu Kang)

I have recently purchase a Groupon deal that allows me to buy $30 worth of food from The Naked Fish Shoppe for just $15. I have been there several years ago and recall that the food was not bad. Hence, I purchased the voucher. If you are keen to find out more about this deal, you can click here. (but do note that the deal is over)
The Naked Fish Shoppe is a western style fish casual restaurant serving many types of fish cuisines cooked in different styles. Besides that, they also serve other type of western cuisines such as Oxtail Stew, chicken and steaks combos. This place is also halal certified!
The Naked Fish Shoppe is located right smack in the heartland at level 1 of The Grassroot's Club, 5 minutes away from the Yio Chu Kang MRT station. It is fairly easy to walk over from the station to the club. In addition, its a shelter walkway.

Brightly lit with a fish theme, the walls were bright blue in colour. A cozy environment
The table although small was nicely decorated with real orchid. What a nice gesture. However, the chair was very uncomfortable especially if one was to lean back.

We wanted to order the Austrailan Flounder and Australian Barramundi Fillet as this was after all a place that specialises in fish. However, both these fishes were not available that day. As such we had to change our orders to Baked Crayfish Thermidor & Fish, Mediterranean Seafood Platter (For One Person) and a bowl of New England Clam Chowder Soup.
Salad
The Mediterranean Seafood Platter was served with a bowl of salad. The vegetables and tomatoes were fresh. However, they were too generous with the sauce.
New England Clam Chowder Soup $4
The New England Clam Chowder Soup was served with a piece of Garlic Bread. The Garlic Bread was cold and hard.
New England Clam Chowder Soup $4
New England Clam Chowder Soup $4
The New England Clam Chowder Soup was not any better. It had a sour after-taste and certainly lack any flavour/essence of clam(s). There were no clams in the soup, only small pieces of potatoes and carrots. What a let down.

Baked Crayfish Thermidor & Fish $17.50
The Baked Crayfish Thermidor & Fish was served with Tartar sauce. Crayfish Thermidor consisted of a creamy mixture of crayfish meat, carrots, mushrooms, onions egg yolk and cheese stuffed into the crayfish shell which will then be baked. The amount of crayfish meat given was pathetic. This dish was saved by the fish which was fresh and complemented well with the tartar sauce.
Mediterranean Seafood Platter (For One Person $16.80)
After shifting the fries to another plate
The Mediterranean Seafood Platter consisted of a combination of Prawn, Mussel, Calamari, Capelin, White Bait and Fish Finger Baked with Cheese. In addition, French Fries was added on top while Garlic Butter Rice was at the bottom. It was also served with a bowl of salad (as shown earlier).

As I ordered this dish, I could not help but notice the similarity between Manhattan Fish Market's and this. Manhattan Fish Market's version was certainly better (tastier, fresher). For The Naked Fish Shoppe's version, its prawn were not fresh (meat stuck to the shells) and the fries were hard. The Capelin was fishy, Calamari was overcook and the Garlic Butter Rice was not fragrant enough (tasted like plain rice). Need I say more?

Overall, this was a very disappointing meal. I had expected much better food. Even though I had purchased the Groupon voucher, I still had to top up $14.15 on top of the $15 I had paid for the voucher. (total bill amount was $44.15) I would have been better off visiting Manhattan Fish Market.

End of 2012 and the next leap into 2013!

2012 has just flown by. Time seems to pass faster and faster. Before I know it, its now 2013. Since FoodieFC has been started in 2010, it has come a long way with more than 800,000 non-unique hits (in wordpress and blogspot). [Thanks everyone for for supporting] In addition, I have managed to post on my foodie experience in other countries such as China (Guangzhou), Hong Kong, India (Chennai, Pune), Indonesia (Bintan), Macau and Malaysia (Johor Bahru). Furthermore, I was also caught in the 'PSY Oppa Gangnam Style' craze, posting on the meaning of Gangnam Style and the interpretation of the song. It was not a silly and ridiculous song after all if you go deeper into the song.

In 2013, the objective will still be the same. There will not be any drastic changes. Food posts and sharing of food deals will still continue. In addition, I will be able to add on some posts on my foodie experience in Europe.

Last but not least, thanks for dropping by. Wishing everyone Happy New Year. May it be a fruitful and exciting year for each and everyone of you. Happy eating.
