Street Food: Porridge and Chicken Rice near Baiyoke Sky Hotel (Thailand, Bangkok)

During our stay in Bangok, we explored around the streets and alleys near our hotel; Baiyoke Boutique Hotel. There were numerous street food stalls. One particular stall caught our eyes one morning and we decided that it would be the place for breakfast before we flew back to Singapore. 
This street food stall caught our eyes because it was the only one which sold porridge. Moreover, there was a constant queue. Furthermore, those in the queues were locals. In fact, we did not see any tourist even though we ate near the stall.

This particular stall is manned by two persons, a gentleman and a lady with red apron who seemed to be the boss. She was the one who cooked the porridge.  
The ingredients that goes into the bowl of porridge before they are served includes liver, pig intestines (large and small), chunks of pork meat, ginger slices and scallions. If you would like to add an egg into the porridge, you would need to inform the lady when making your orders.
A huge pot of porridge which the lady constantly stirs. 
After selling every few bowls of porridge, the lady would add chunks of pork meat into the pot of porridge. Her action showed how much she cared about the food she cooked.

There were three makeshift tables and chairs along the alley behind this stall. Most locals pack the porridge back. After making our orders, we proceeded to the tables and chairs. The gentleman would delivery the porridge to the tables. 
Porridge with egg 35 Baht (S$1.50)
We requested for an egg to be added into the porridge. This cost 35 Baht (S$1.50). The porridge was served with chunks of pork meat, a few pieces of large and small intestines and liver. It was topped with scallions, slices of ginger, pepper and light soya sauce. The egg which was added in it was half cooked; semi solid egg white and runny yolk (similar to the type you get in Yakun / Toast Box).

We mixed the egg with the porridge to give it a creamier texture and taste. The porridge was not fantastic, but it was very decent. For just 35 Baht, you would be getting quite a fair variety of ingredients. I can't complain much. But if you looking for someplace for breakfast, this could be an alternative.

This chicken rice stall is located next to the porridge stall. 
Compared to its neighbour (i.e. porridge stall), this stall had no customers. Nevertheless, we ordered a  pack of chicken rice to share.

The chicken rice was average. The chicken meat fared better than the rice.

Todai Singapore - International Seafood And Sushi Buffet Restaurant (Marina Bay Sands)

Todai Singapore an international seafood and sushi buffet restaurant opened at Marina Bay Sands in 2011. It  is an international brand with presence in United States, Hong Kong and China South Korea, and has been hailed as 'The Mother of All Seafood Buffet' by a famous food critic. Todai Singapore presence in Singapore has not been exactly smooth sailing. In late 2011, a group of customers had food poisoning after consuming the oysters in Todai. Those who followed the news would have known that the Todai's management responded quickly and compensated the customers. It was heartening to note that they did not reacted negatively or defensively.

I have been wanting to visit Todai Singapore as I am a fan of Seafood. I have to try this 'mother of all seafood buffet'!
Todai Singapore is located at the corner of the basement of Marina Bay Sands (the portion nearer to Bayfront MRT station entrance / Exhibition Center).
Abalone Festival and Alaskan Crab Buffet

For the month of May and June, Todai held a Premium Abalone Festival along with Alaskan Crab Buffet.
Stepping into the restaurant, I was most impressive with the long line of buffet spread. Todai Singapore had quite an extensive spread of food. The seating capacity was huge! Even on a weekend, they restaurant had just 50%  of the tables occupied.

There were Salads & Cold Cuts, Sushi & Sashimi, Cold Seafood, Italian Pizza & Pasta, Brazilian Churassco, Korean food, Noodles, Western food, Chinese food, Deep Fry and Desserts.
King Crab, Snow Crab and Red Crab

Baby Octopus, Green Mussuel, Scallop
The King Crab, Snow Crab and Red Crab section, and the Baby Octopus, Green Mussuel, Scallop (Cold Seafood) section were the most popular sections.
Desserts and Macaroons
Todai Singapore had a unique way of displaying the Macaroons in the shape of a pyramid. The dessert section was next to it.
Food from the Cold Seafood section; Snow Crab, Abalone, Baby Octopus, Green Mussel and Scallop. The Snow Crab was great! Fresh and sweet! The best item among all the food in the Cold Seafood section. The mussel was average. The first batch of Scallop was very fresh. However, the subsequent batches were not as good.
Abalone
The highlight for the month was supposed to be the Abalone. It was small in size and taste wise was not impressive. The snow crab stole the limelight.

The Abalone Porridge was tasty, flavourful and not diluted. Although there were only a few pieces of abalone bits in it, it was surprisingly delish.
Sushi and Salmon Sashimi

The Sushi seen in the above photo was just the tip of the ice berg. There were more different varieties of sushi available.
Western food

Deep Fry food
The Grill Lamb Rack and La Galbi (Beef Short Rib) were tough and hard. The other sections in the Deep Fry section was equally disappointing. Especially the Vegetable Tempura which had a thick coat of batter and were oily. The Miso Shisamo with Gratin Sauce had such a fishy smell that I did not finish it.

The Salmon Steak with Digon Sauce fared better.

The Abalone Gratin was a hard to get item. I walked past the counter several times to try to land my hands on it. They replaced this item at a very slow rate. Out of all the abalone items (Abalone, Abalone Porridge, Abalone Gratin), the Abalone Gratin was the most disappointing.

The food at the Churassco section was incredibly oily. Even the mushroom was soak fully of oil. The chicken wings were overcooked and tasteless. The Italian food fared much better compared to the food at the Churassco section.

I went back for more of the abalones and snow crabs. The Snow Crab was the only item which I went back several times for. Look at how big they are.
Desserts and Macarons
 The Macarons were not bad.
Ice Cream
I need to improve in using the ice cream machine. The ice cream was quite delish!

Overall, I only like Todai Singapore for their King Crab, Snow Crab, Red Crab and Ice Cream. Although there was a wide variety of food, I did not fancy most of the food. As we ate during lunch on a weekend, after adding up all the additional charges, the bill came up to $75.33 nett per person. Quite pricey, I would be better off going to Kuishinbo if I was to just spam on the Snow Crab (which was what I did).

Tiong Shian Porridge 長城粥品 (New Bridge Road) 3rd Post

Another visit back to Tiong Shian Porridge 長城粥品 at New Bridge Road. I realised that whenever I visit Chinatown, I will always visit Tiong Shian Porridge for dinner. Having to travel all the way from the North, how could I miss such an opportunity. If you would like a quick introduction of this, check out my previous posts. 
As usual (from my previous visits), we waited around half an hour for our food to arrive.
The good thing is that the food always arrive all together at the same time! 
Raw Fish (small) $3.90
Tiong Shian Porridge's Raw Fish which ordered by almost everyone who patronise this coffee shop. The Raw Fish was served with slices of raw fish, ginger, chilli, shallot, spring onion, lettuce and a lime. The sauce underneath seems to contained sesame oil. The fish was fresh with no fishy taste. Soft and smooth with a hint of sweetness. A must order dish. How I wish I could order this fish and add it into my Chinese New Year Yu Sheng! 
Braised Beancurd $2.60
The Braised Beancurd (Lou Beancurd) was soft, smooth and silky. The sauce and the chilli provided complement the beancurd perfectly. This is the only beancurd dish that I know is served with chilli! Shiok! Another dish worth ordering. Simple yet delicious. 
Chicken Porridge $3.20
The chicken given in the Chicken Porridge were well marinate and tender. However, the porridge was on the salty end else it would be perfect.

The must order, Dried Chilli Frog Leg. It was well executed. The frog meat was well marinated and well coated with immense flavours of spiciness and sweetness. So delectable. 
Plain Porridge $0.60
A bowl of plain porridge for me to savour by adding the sauce from the Dried Chilli Frog Leg.

If you are wondering where to get a good bowl of porridge with Dried Chilli Frog Leg or what to eat in Chinatown, Tiong Shian Porridge is unlikely to disappoint. To me the food here is irresistible!

Shin Yeh 欣葉 (Liang Court)

Shin Yeh 欣葉, a well known Taiwanese restaurant chain has established itself in Singapore at the 2nd level of Liang Court. It is brought over to Singapore under the Tung Lok Group (might be a franchise agreement, I am not too sure).


The interior of Shin Yeh was spacious and classy. There are many private rooms suitable for (large groups) family gatherings. There is a nice view of the Clarke Quay river towards the very end of the restaurant. If you would like a table with such a view, it would be advisable to make reservations.

Wok-seared Pig's Liver with Coriander $14
The signature Wok-seared Pig's Liver with Coriander had garnered the most raves on the net. It did not disappoint. No wonder this is a must order dish at Shin Yeh. Very tasty, it was still tender and soft in the interior. It was quick fry under high heat to seal the flavours in and prevent the liver from being overcook. 
Pan-fried Turnip Cake $10
The signature Pan-fried Turnip Cake was very well executed. The crunchy dried turnips (chye poh) were not overly salty while the egg was fluffy and moist. Despite being so thick, it was well cooked. Moreover, it was not oily and certainly not soggy after a period of time. This dish was a test for the chef's skill and I am most impressed by the execution of the dish. A case of minimal seasoning, non-greasy and using the freshness and natural flavour of the ingredient (turnip). However, $10 for this, is quite expensive. In layman terms, it is just egg with turnips (chye poh)..
Poached Savoury Kampong Chicken $16
The Poached Savoury Kampong Chicken was another hit. The skin was crunchy while the meat was very tender, juicy and tasty. There was a layer of jelly underneath the skin (this occurs when the chicken is dunked into iced water after the cooking process to chill it to ensure that the chicken will not be overcooked).  Polished off this dish and still wanted more despite it being just the 2 of us.

This bowl of Doubled-boiled Shark's Fin with Bamboo Pith, Dried Scallops and Cabbage was incredibly delish! The bamboo Pith was cooked till soft, retained its shape and texture, and had absorbed essence of the soup. The cabbage added sweetness to the soup. While the scallop enhanced the flavour further. It was a delight drinking this flavourful, tasty soup together with the ingredients including the Shark's Fin. Desipte the fact that not a lot of shark's fin were given, this bowl of soup was unforgettable for all the positive reasons stated above.
Wok-fried Seasonal Vegetables (Broccoli) $12
The Wok-fried Seasonal Vegetables (Broccoli) was decently cooked. Not overcooked, not undercooked. The timing was just right and it was tasty.
Taiwan-style Sweet Potato Porridge $1.50 (per person)
Pipping hot Taiwan-style Sweet Potato Porridge to complement the dishes ordered. For this dish, it is refillable. We had two bowls each. The porridge was cooked till the rice grains were soft and still retained its shape. 
Chinese Tea $12 (per pot)
Pot of Chinese tea that was kept warm by the tea light below. 
Complimentary Muah Chee
Complimentary Muah Chee with grounded peanuts. The peanuts were too finely grated for my liking.

The dishes that we had were impressive and delicious. To me, it was all hits except for the complimentary Muah Chee. The only issue I have is the service. The dishes were served quickly (which was a good thing for us). Initially, the service was prompt, our pot of tea was refilled with hot water constantly. However, towards 730pm when the place was packed (almost full house). We had to request thrice before our pot of tea was refilled with hot water. In addition, to pay the bill, I waited for almost half an hour! Furthermore, The Muah Chee was served after I received the bill slip. It was pretty obvious that there were insufficient staff as several customers were also trying to get the attention of the waitress/waiter.

Another point to note, is that the prices of the food are on the higher tier. But for this quality, I can't complain much as the dishes were delicious and used quality ingredients. Worth the price! It is highly recommended that reservations be made if you are coming over for a meal on weekends or Friday as the restaurant was full during my visit on a Saturday night.
