Bliss Restaurant (Ang Mo Kio)

Bliss Restaurant used to be located at Punggol Park. One and a half years ago, they relocated to Chengsan Community Centre which is just a stone throw away from Ang Mo Kio MRT station. Less than 10 minutes walk away from the station, most of which was through a sheltered walk way.
Air-conditioned  - indoor (left), Alfresco area - outdoor  (right)
Bliss Restaurant offers customers with both indoor - air conditioned and outdoor - alfresco dining areas with a seating capacity of 300! On the day of visit, I noticed that more than half of the customers were seated at the alfresco dining area. Maybe it was because it was a cold day as it was raining an hour earlier.

Customers will be spoil for choice as Bliss Restaurant offers an extensive choice of dishes ranging from Starters, Appetizers, Sides, Pasta, Meat, Ocean,  Dessert, Waffle, Sundae and Drinks (Coffee, Tea, Hot & Cold Beverages, Float, Cocktail, Beer, Liquor).  As I had a hard time deciding what to order, I decided to seek recommendations from the staff. Click here to view their menu.
Ham & Cheese Stick $6.90
The Ham & Cheese Stick has been a Bliss Specialty Since 2001. It consisted of breaded chicken ham rolled with cheddar cheese. It was topped with fried curry leaves.
Ham & Cheese Stick $6.90
I was quite impressed with the Ham & Cheese Stick. Cutting it into half and stuffing a piece of curry leaf into it heightened the aroma to a whole new different level. The only issue I have is that the cheese seems to 'solidify' pretty fast. Maybe we took too long taking photos of it.
Mussel In White Wine (1 Dozen) $13.90
The Mussel In White Wine, a dozen of half shell mussels cooked with white wine, garlic and parsley. The mussels were big, fat, juicy and fresh.
Aglio Olio Smoked Pepper Duck with Squid Ink Tagliatelle $12.90
The Aglio Olio Smoked Pepper Duck was strongly recommended by the staff. I decided to order that but decided to order another type of pasta, which was the Aglio Olio Smoked Pepper Duck with Squid Ink Tagliatelle.
Aglio Olio Smoked Pepper Duck with Squid Ink Tagliatelle $12.90
Duck meat is normally tough. However, in this case, Bliss Restaurant's Smoked Pepper Duck was soft and tender (I wonder how they cooked it). As a whole, I thought that this dish was well-executed. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise the squid ink pasta did not taste have a very strong squid ink taste which could have overwhelmed the flavours from the Aglio Olio!
Gratin RibEye Steak $18.90
The Gratin RibEye Steak accompanied by baby potatoes and greens, was served with mushroom sauce  on sizzling a sotplate. Normally, it is served with cheddar cheese, however, we decided to switch it to mushroom sauce as the starter we had earlier already had cheddar cheese in it.
Gratin RibEye Steak $18.90 - Baby Potatoes
Gratin RibEye Steak $18.90 - greens
Was pleasantly surprised by the generosity of the ingredients given. Lots of greens, baby potatoes, onions (at the bottom of the steak) and a big piece of steak!

The mushroom sauce was heavenly. It had the right blend of sweetness, fragrant and seems to be accompanied by a slight herbal taste. A perfect complement for the steak, potatoes and onions. I polished off this whole plate!  The only 'glitch' was that the carrots were a tad too hard; could have been cooked a little longer.
Traditional Italian Tiramisu $6.90
Traditional Italian Tiramisu $6.90
The Traditional Italian Tiramisu, another Bliss Specialty Since 2001 was decent. Soft, moist and creamy with the right balance in taste.
Sea Salt Caramel Banana $7.90
Sea Salt Caramel Banana $7.90
The Sea Salt Caramel Banana consisted of sliced banana tossed with salty caramel sauce topped over freshly made waffle. Unlike most waffles I have eaten so far, Bliss Restaurant's version was was thick and fluffy. The whole waffle was topped with slices of bananas and sea salt caramel sauce. How I wish I could add a scope of ice cream over it!
Deadly K Meet Mr. Dark (Alcoholic Sundae) $7.90
Leaving the best for the last, the Deadly K Meet Mr. Dark; an alcoholic sundae was essentially dark chocolate ice cream swimming in kahlua bath accompanied with wholesome chunky rich brownies cubes and drizzled with chocolate fudge. I have never try / seen / hear of something like this before (mountain tortoise) and I am not a fan of alcoholic stuff. But yet the Deadly K Meet Mr. Dark stole the show! The more you dig into it, the more you will love it. Outstanding!

Overall, I was impressed with the dining experience at Bliss Restaurant. The food was good and the prices are reasonable too. Good news for those staying in the North., there's another place to visit! I am so glad that they have relocated to Ang Mo Kio!

Thanks Pamela for invite and hosting us.

The Manhattan Fish Market (Marina Square)

This month; February 2012, there seems to be many 'Buy 1 Get 1 Free Deals'. The Manhattan Fish Market is one of those offering a Buy 1 Get 1 Free Deal called the OOHSOME TWOSOME Deal!
OOHSOME TWOSOME Deal (Source: Manhattan Fish Market Singapore)
The OOHSOME TWOSOME Deal allows customers to purchase a combination of any 2 dishes (Small Flame and/or Small Grill) for the price of just $19.90++. This deal is only valid till 8 March 2012.

Visited The Manhattan Fish Market outlet at Marina Square to try out this deal.
Large poster outside The Manhattan Fish Market promoting the OOHSOME TWOSOME Deal. Arrived at 530pm on a Saturday and saw a short queue. Luckily, there was plenty of space and we got a table straight away. I was surprised when the waiter gave us the main menu only, had to request for the OOHSOME TWOSOME menu. Guess it was an oversight as the place was packed.

The OOHSOME TWOSOME Deal allows customers to add Soup of the Day and Mocktail (Drink) for an addition fee (of course). We decided to order 1 Small Flame and 1 Small Grill and top up $9.90 for 2 Soup of the Day and 2 Mocktails.
Soup of the Day (Cream of Mushroom Soup)
The Soup of the Day was Cream of Mushroom Soup. It comes in a very small bowl (wish that more was given). Lots of fragrant mushrooms bits in the soup.
Mocktail (Cala Cala)
The Mocktail which I choose was the Cala Cala which is Sprite with Lime added inside. Very refreshing.
Small Flame
The Small Flame consist of the award winning Flaming Prawns, Battered  Fillet, Garlic Herb Rice, Crispy Chips (Fries), Broccoli and Carrots.

The Flaming Prawns was delicious, the melted cheese on top was thick and cheesy. In addition, the prawn was fresh, firm and not charred. Battered Fillet was yummy, except that I found it on the oily end. Crispy Chips which was fries. The Broccoli and Carrots are steamed, makes this dish looks bright, cheerful and appetising!
Small Grill
The Small Grill consist of grilled Fish Fillet, grilled Calamari, grilled prawns, Garlic Herb Rice, Crispy Chips (Fries), Broccoli and Carrots.

The grilled prawn was good, however I prefer the flaming prawn version. Again, prefer Batter Fillet to Grilled Fillet. The Grilled Calamari was average, I prefer their Fried Calamari which can be ordered in their A La Carte Menu.

Both Small Grill and Small Flame comes with Garlic Herb Rice. They are very generous with the portions especially the Garlic Herb Rice. We were unable to finish our respective orders. If I was to patronise Manhattan Fish Market again, I will order 2 Small Flame instead! This deal is certainty value for money! However, the service could be improved. Many a times, we found it hard to get the attention of the waiter / waitress. When we were leaving at around 630pm, we noticed that there was a long queue outside The Manhattan Fish Market! Luckily we went for an early dinner!

Hurry enjoy the OOHSOME TWOSOME Deal! It is valid till 8 March 2012. Wish that The Manhattan Fish Market and other restaurants can have more of such deals more often!

The Kelong Restaurant (Bintan)

Went over to Bintan with her over the weekend [2days 1 night] =). Stayed at Nirwana Resort Hotel. Its called a resort for a reason. Food prices there are pretty expensive.. a meal there can set you back by SGD15 to 35 per person per meal. The Nirwana Resort Hotel has 3 restaurants located in the hotel, food there are similar no matter which restaurants you go to. Luckily for us, we decided to take the internal shuttle bus to The Kelong Restaurant. We actually took a long time to decide where to eat for dinner as the food in the hotel was lousy yet expensive.

Am blogging about this restaurant as it is a place with real good, fresh and cheap(compared to other restaurants) food.

Close up of the lamp
The Kelong Restaurant is set up on stilts in the sea. It has a open concept so that the breeze from the sea will blow in. Its a pity there was no breeze when we were there.
The Kelong Menu
Tom Yam Soup $14 (big bowl)

The waiter served the Tom Yam Soup for us into 2 smaller bowl, yet there was still half a bowl of soup (See picture above title :  Tom Yam Soup $14 (big bowl)) remaining filled with ingredients. This bowl of Tom Yam Soup was spicy yet sour.. totally my kind of tom yam soup. Surprisingly, inside there’s even about 4 pieces of flower crab! The flower crab was fresh, the meat did not stick to the shell and it was sweet. In addition, there are four pieces of prawns, squids, mushrooms, clams. These ingredients are all fresh and well cooked. The squid was not over cooked. The prawns were firm and v fresh! This bowl of tom yam soup is certainty much better than most in Singapore. Although we find it spicy, but its so good that you can’t stop drinking. Of course we ordered two bowl of steam rice.
Crispy Chicken (Half Portion) $13
Crispy Chicken. The chicken should be similar to that of a spring chicken. The skin is very crispy and its finger licking good. But certain parts might be abit dry. Still this dish was cooked much better than the crispy chickens from most wedding dinners.
Stewed Beancurd with Vegetable and Seafood $12
From the menu, we thought that this was a simple dish.. but when it came, I was WOW. Never did I expect so much. I have badly underestimated this dish. Besides vegetable, beancurd, mushroom and carrot, there was squid, 4 pieces of prawns (again) and even scallops. The prawns and squid were fresh as with the Tom Yam Soup. The surprise was really the scallops, hidden under the mushroom and carrots. The scallop was damn fresh!
Stirred Fried Prawns with Butter and Oats $22
The most expensive dish of the meal, took quite a long time to come. We did not know the previous 2 dishes will come with prawns too, hence the overdose of prawns =). Prawns were very fresh. But was disappointed that there was virtually no oats. Still a decent dish. But after the last 3 dishes which were fantastic and exceeded my expectations, this dish is definitely the worst dish when compared to the whole meal.
The Bill
The damage, total cost SGD76.23. The preferred choice of currency is Singapore Dollars.

I would say it was quite a worth while meal as it would cost the same eating elsewhere in Bintan and the food variety will be lesser and of worse quality. If you are going to Bintan, this place is highly recommended. Food quality wise it is very good. Although the place was crowded, there were many serving staff. The service there was very good, fast, prompt, friendly and polite. They are very approachable and will willingly take pictures for you or even teach you how to eat crabs (as we saw a waiter teaching 2 Koreans/Japanese how to eat crab. Kudos to this place.

The Kelong Restaurant is definitely a ‘Die die must try‘ place to go to in Bintan.
