Teochew Meat Puff 潮州香饼 (Pasar Malam - Street Market)

Teochew Meat Puff 潮州香饼 is a very popular pasar malam stall in Singapore. It does not operate at a permanent physical location as it roams around Singapore, making it presence felt at certain pasar malam locations. 
As such, fans of this stall are updated on its location through its Facebook Page. It has over 7,500 followers on its page. I guess by MOF's standard, this would mean that it is a ''Facebook influencer''! (pun intended)
The teochew meat puffs come with different varieties such as oyster, crab, octopus, prawn, scallop and vegetable. The popular ones are the oyster and prawn versions. 
If you are a frequent visitor of pasar malam, you would probably have seen this stall before. It is fairly easy to spot it as it would be the stall with the longest and slowest moving queue.  
The reason main reason why the waiting time is long is because each puff is made freshly upon order. It is important to take note that each meat puff takes about 45 seconds to handmade and 10 to 15 minutes to cook. Also, most people in the queue are ordering minimally two meat puffs. Some order five meat puffs! These add up to the waiting time. 

Just to illustrate the waiting time, during non-peak hours at 2pm on a weekday with a queue of 6 persons in front, the waiting time can be around half an hour. During peak period, evening time, a queue of 12 persons will easily mean a waiting time of at least 1 hour! I have even heard of people waiting for 2 hours! 
It is not an easy job making the meat puffs and cooking them in the sweltering heat. I really salute the owners for their effort in ensuring each handmade meat puffs are perfectly made and cooked in the heat.

So how was the meat puff? It was huge. The outer layer was crisp while the inner layer was filled with moists minced pork meat and mushrooms, lots of Chinese parsley and the filling of your choice. This is best shared among at least 2 persons! I would certainly order this again if the queue is less than half an hour long!

Huat Kee Kway Chap 發記馃汁 (Yishun)

Huat Kee Kway Chap 發記馃汁 is located in a coffeeshop at a quiet neighbourhood in Yishun. Although it is not located near the MRT station, this Kway Chap stall is relatively popular. 
This stall is so popular that they nearly alway sell out their food way before closing time. When I visited on a weekday, they started closing the stall at 11.10 am! Yes, that is how popular they are. 
Although we visited at 10.30am, which is no considered a peak period, we had to wait more than 30 minutes for our food. I cannot imagine the waiting time on weekends.
The broth of the  kway teow, which was light brown, had a tasty and savoury taste. Also, there was a distinct herbal flavour.
We ordered quite a few items to accompany the kway chap. The items were accompanied by a rich and savoury flavoured gravy. Also, the pork belly were tender and soft. I enjoyed dipping them into the homemade chilli which added a refreshing tangy twist to the items.

If you intend to try this, do remember to come early!

Hock Lee Fishball Noodle (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre)

Fishball Noodles (dry with no chilli) $3.50
If you are working around Bugis area and are looking for a good breakfast, give Hock Lee Fishball Noodle a try! This stall is located at Albert Centre Market and Food Centre. It opens only in the morning and start selling their noodles at 6.30 am onwards.
 So what is so unique about Hock Lee? Well, it sells handmade fishballs, not factory-made fishballs.
The fishball noodles comes at different prices, ranging from $3.50 to $5. There is always a short queue at this shop, but they clear them quite fast. Another point to note is that although the shop closes at 12 pm, sometimes they sell out by 11 am. So if you are an office worker, it is nearly impossible to try this during lunch time as they would be closed by then.

The Fishball Noodles (dry with no chilli) $3.50 came with 6 pieces of fishball. The star of this is definitely their handmaded fishballs. The fishballs, of different sizes as they were handmade, were firm and springy, and slightly smooth!

As their signboard mention about their special chilli, I had to give it a try. Hence, on another occasion, I ordered the Fishball Noodles (dry with chilli) $3.50. Personally, I thought that it was just average. Maybe it was because I felt that there was too much chilli oil. I prefer the version without chilli. 

To conclude, this is worth a try! Priced at $3.50, you get 6 pieces of fishballs along with noodles. That is effectively $0.50 for each piece of fishball and the bowl of noodles! Definitely worth it!

Peperoni Pizzeria (Thomson)

Portobello Funghi Pizza
Peperoni Pizzeria, owned by the Les Amis Group, specialises in serving Italian cuisine such as its wood-fired pizzas and traditional pasta. I first patronised Peperoni Pizzeria in 2012 at Hillcrest (Greenwood Avenue). Back then, they had only 3 outlets. Today, they are so successful that they have expanded to 7 outlets with its newest outlet at Thomson! 
Their Thomson outlet opened in 2016 and is located at the end of the row of shophouses where UOB is located at. We visited on a weekday afternoon and was not surprised to see that there were few customers. This was also partly due to the construction works for the upcoming MRT station. When the station is operational, I am sure the area will be bustling with people.

The pizzas are cooked using traditional wood-fired oven. I like the fact that customers are able to see the kitchen and how the food are being cooked. It is visually appealing and provides assurance on not only hygiene, but also the standard of the food.
Peperoni Set Lunch
The Set Lunch, available only during lunch time on Mondays to Fridays, is so value for money considering that it cost $14.90 nett! Moreover, it includes salad and drink. 

We ordered two set lunches. 
Garden Salad, Coke, Sprite
The Garden Salad along with Coke and Sprite.
Amatriciana 
We ordered the Amatriciana pasta; linguine with sauteed Bacon and Onions in Tomato Sauce, which was excellent! The bacon bits provided a savoury flavour while the onions provided a crunchy texture. Also, the taste of the tomato sauce was just right and had the right amount of tangy-ness.
Portobello Funghi Pizza
Being someone who likes mushroom, it should not be a surprise that I ordered this - Portobello Funghi Pizza. It consisted of portobello mushroom, tomato concasse, scallion served with a sunny-side up egg and a dash of truffle oil. The wood-fire pizza's crust was thin and crisp, and it was delicious!

I quite like the food at Peperoni Pizzeria. Moreover, in terms of cost, the price is NETT which means that there is no service charge!

IT Roo Cafe (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

IT Roo Cafe is widely known as the place to go to for chicken chop in Johor Bahru. Its concept is more of an eatery or coffee shop rather than a cafe. It is located 10 minutes away from the causeway and is in fact 1 minute walk away from its competitor;  Hua Mui Coffee Shop 华美茶餐室
The interior of IT Roo Cafe was simple and traditional with a mix of indoor and alfresco seating. There were many old photographs and articles put up against the wall showcasing its history. 
I visited at 12 noon sharp, which was the start of the eatery's operating hours and was surprised to see that there was already three customers sitting down and waiting to collect their takeaway order. I thought that I would be the first customer.

This is IT Roo Cafe's menu. They sell a variety of food, other than western food, they also sell local cuisines such as fried rice and noodles which is again similar to Hua Mui Coffee Shop.

I ordered the Grilled Chicken Chop with Mushroom Sauce RM 16 and Mushroom Soup RM 4.50.

The Mushroom Soup RM 4.50 was just average.

As for the Grilled Chicken Chop with Mushroom Sauce RM 16, it was delicious! I appreciated the generous amount of mushroom sauce with slices of mushrooms and potato wedges. The sauce had a delicate mushroom flavour. They used a whole chicken thigh for their chicken chop and grilled it perfectly, resulted in a succulent chicken chop which retained the flavour and juices.

IT Roo Cafe serves two types of chicken chop; grilled or deep fried. The next time I visit, I will try their deep fried chicken chop as they are popular for both versions. During my visit, I saw many customers ordering the IT Roo Fried Rice which cost RM 7.50. It seems to be another item worth ordering.

Kimdo BBQ 金都串串烧 @ JB City Square (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

If you are someone who frequently cross the causeway using public transport (i.e. bus), you would likely know about Kimdo BBQ 金都串串烧 . Kimdo BBQ is a small stall located at City Square which you would need to pass if you are entering the mall after clearing the customs. It is popular for its signature BBQ Single Bone Chicken Wing and Lau Shu Fen Noodles (Silver Needle Noodles). Kimdo BBQ as its name suggests is a BBQ specialist. Their stall in City Square is in fact a BBQ expresss stall offering 15 to 20 BBQ items. Their main outlet is located at Taman Sentosa.

I heard so much about their Lau Shu Fen Noodles (Silver Needle Noodles) but have never tried it before since its quite troublesome and heavy to pack this back into Singapore. Fortunately, I got an opportunity recently. 

The Lau Shu Fen Noodles (Silver Needle Noodles) was delicious. It was filled with generous serving of ingredients ranging from salted fish, cabbage, mushroom, minced chicken and shallots. The soup was tasty too! 

Kimdo BBQ would among the first few stalls I'll visit. I think the concept of a barbecue pitstop in a shopping mall is pretty unique. You’ll get to choose from about 15 to 20 items for the staff to barbecue on the spot, ranging from the normal fishballs to the broccoli.
Single Bone Chicken Wing, Seafood Tofu, Curry Quail Eggs and Hokkaido Scallops
For the BBQ items, after you have ordered the items, the staff would BBQ them on the spot. Our favourite items are the Single Bone Chicken Wing, Seafood Tofu and Hokkaido Scallops. The chicken wings are unique as they are flat and just have a single bone. It was easy to eat it and the meat was full of smokey fragrance. Their homemade chili complement it perfectly even though it was so spicy. 

This is a stall that I always patronise for their BBQ items whenever I cross the causeway via public transport! If you have not tried this yet, you should!

Serangoon Garden Carrot Cake & Wanton Noodle 菜頭粿雲吞面 (Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre)

While queuing for Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle's Fish Maw Soup Noodles, we noticed that most people who were eating the fish maw soup also had a plate of carrot cake at their table. We realised that the carrot cake was from a stall called Serangoon Garden Carrot Cake & Wanton Noodle, which seems like the only carrot cake stall at the food centre. 

Although the stall also sold wanton noodles, nearly everyone who ordered from this stall ordered their carrot cake. 
White Carrot Cake $3
We ordered the White Carrot Cake which cost $3. Taste wise, it was decent. It  had a crisp texture on the exterior, and was firm and soft on the inside. And I like the fact that it was not overly oily or tasty.

I noticed that most people ordered their Black Carrot Cake. I wonder if that was their more popular dish.

Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 胜记香菇肉脞面 (Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre)

Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle 胜记香菇肉脞面 is a popular minced meat noodles stall. Its unique selling point is and most popular dish is in fact another dish; Fish Maw (鱼鳔) Noodles. It is indeed surprisingly that a hawker stall would sell fish maw as it is considered a luxury item that is more commonly sold at a restaurant. This stall has been so successful in this dish that most people who patronise the stall would not hesitate to order this dish. 
The stall has been in operation for more than 30 years. It used to be located at Eunos before moving to Changi Road and eventually to its current location at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre. When we visited this stall on a weekday afternoon at lunch time there was a queue of 8 persons. The queue was slow moving as each dish was cooked individually. This was also one of the few stalls where there was a perpetual queue. 

We ordered the Fish Maw Noodles (Soup) $10 and Minced Meat Noodles (Dry) $4.50.

If you are visiting Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle, you have to order their signature Fish Maw Noodles (Soup) $10 since this is a dish that is not available at other hawker centres.

The Fish Maw Noodles (Soup) $10 was filled with lots of ingredients. There were lean meat, minced meat, pork liver, braised mushrooms, egg, beansprouts and 3 slices of fish maw! They were so generous with the fish maw and braised mushrooms. If you have cooked and ate fish maw at home, you would know that choosing and buying one of good quality is hard and costly. Cooking it is another art of its own. If you buy one of lousy quality you risk making the whole dish fishy. This stall executed the fish maw extremely well. The fish maw was not fishy and did not make the soup tasted fishy! *Claps*  

The soup was robust and tasty with a natural sweetness. Moreover, it had a unique smokey fragrance in it and the bites of dried fish sole enhanced the taste of the soup. No wonder most of their customers ordered the soup based version.
 Minced Meat Noodles (Dry) $4.50
The Minced Meat Noodles (Dry) $4 (also known as Bak Chor Mee) was quite unique as the sauce used was a concoction of dark soya sauce (instead of vinegar), mushroom sauce with chilli. The serving of ingredients was also very generous. There were many slices of lean meat, pork liver and minced meat. There were also lots of beansprouts at the bottom along with fried pork lard and  dried sole fish. What I liked most was the amount of braised mushroom given. Most minced meat noodles stall no longer cook and provide this, even if they do, they would just provide 3 slices. 

If you are at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre, do give their Fish Maw Soup Noodles dish a try. Its real good!

Loco Loco (Northpoint)

Loco Loco a newly opened stall located at the basement one of Northpoint is well-known for its Churros. This is in fact the first permanent stall as all along, it had operated in the form of pop up stalls in pasar malams and bazaars
What is even more interesting is that Loco Loco is opened by a young lady who is currently studying Business Management at SMU! 
The churros menu. There are a total of 5 variety of churros! They even sell the localised flavour such as Ondeh Ondeh and Chilli Crab Churros!
They also offer other items such as Scotch Eggs and Thai Milk Tea. We went during the first week as there was a 1 for churros promotion. It was so crowded! We were told that the waiting time was at least 45 mins. By the time we received our churros, we heard the staff telling other customers who were ordering that the wait timing is at least 1.5 hours!

The churros were made on the spot from scratch and then fried. Hence the long waiting time. Glad that they did not compromise on the quality despite the crowd..

Anyway jokes aside. I think these are the two founders of Loco Loco. The lady is Crystal Cheng while the guy is called Zi Yao.

Oreo Churros (with chocolate sauce), Chilli Crab Churros
The Oreo Churros $5.50 came with a choice of sauce (chocolate, white chocolate or caramel). I was told the the Chocolate sauce was not too sweet hence I went for that option. Taste wise, I thought that it was just average.

The Chilli Crab Churros $5.90 consisted of original churros with chilli crab sauce. The chilli crab sauce was the bomb! Paired with the churros, it was out of the world! A must try!

The Salted Egg Yolk Churros $5.90 consisted of original churros with salted egg yolk sauce. The sauce was lacking in salted egg taste.

As for the Ondeh Ondeh Churros $5.50 consisted of original churros coated with cinnamon sugar and sprinkled with coconut flakes with gula melaka sauce. I had high expectations for this as I heard so much about it and was expecting to experience the ondeh ondeh taste. But I was left disappointed.

Forgive us, we were bored, so we took too many photos and even a video. 

Overall, the Churros were all served warm and crispy on the outside as they were just fried. On the inside they were soft and chewy. Hence, be sure to eat this immediately as it would not be crisp once it cools down. No prizes for guesssing, my favourite is the Chilli Crab Churros which is a must try!
