Bak Kut Teh • Ipoh Hor Fun (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre)

Bak Kut Teh • Ipoh Hor Fun is a hawker stall located at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre. This food centre located a stone throw away from Bugis MRT station is just behind Bugis Village. This stall is unique as it offers both Bak Kut Teh and Ipoh Hor Fun.
The Bak Kut Teh Menu.
Ipoh Hor Fun Menu. They offer a few variety of hor fun.
This stall is operated by two person. The gentleman at the foreground is the owner while the lady is the helper. The lady has since left and the owner had to operate as a one man show for a number of weeks.
I was glad that during a recent visit, I found out that the owner had managed to hire another helper to help him. Heard from him that it was tough looking for a helper who was willing to work at the food centre as it was hot, stuffy and long hours.
Shredded Chicken Hor Fun $4
As usual I was a greedy glutton and upsized the Hor Fun to $4.
Shredded Chicken Hor Fun $4
The Shredded Chicken Hor Fun $4 was served with many pieces of shredded chicken meat, vegetables, slices of mushrooms and a lots of hor fun. I liked the mushrooms which absorbed the hor fun sauce and was so juicy. The other ingredients were normal. What stood out was the dark Hor Fun gravy which was well executed. The gravy was pleasantly flavourful with the right amount of starch. In addition, there were wolfberries aka Goji in the gravy which gave it a slightly sweet taste.

The gravy complemented the ingredients well making the whole dish so pleasant and delicious.
Fried Wanton Hor Fun $4
Char Siew Wanton Hor Fun $4
Both the Fried Wanton Hor Fun $4 and Char Siew Wanton Hor Fun $4 were not bad too. The gravy played an important role.

I have always been back and tried their different variations of Ipoh Hor Fun and have not tried their Bak Kut Teh before. If you have tried it, do let me know how it fared.

Overall, this stall; Bak Kut Teh • Ipoh Hor Fun serves a decent plate of Hor Fun accompanied by generous serving of ingredients. It may not be the best but, for the price it was certainly value for money.

Ji De Chi 记得吃 (Liang Seah Street)

Ji De Chi 记得吃  is a dessert shop located along Liang Seah Street  (Bugis), opposite Ah Chew Desserts. Ji De Chi has three outlets. The other two outlets are located in Jurong Point and Plaza Singapura. Visited the eatery on a couple of occasions.
Sawdust Pudding - Green Tea Flavour with Red Bean $5
The Sawdust Pudding (also known as Serradura) is a well-known pudding (dessert) in Macau. It is typically made of crushed biscuits (sawdust) and cream. We ordered the Green Tea Flavour which came with Red Beans. The pudding had 2 layer of biscuits between the cream. My first time trying this, it was satisfying.
Ji De Chi Special Beancurd - Ji De Chi Traditional Ginger Syrup Soya Beancurd (cold) $3
Syrup
Ji De Chi Special Beancurd tasted normal to me. It was no different from other beancurd sold elsewhere.
Hot/Cold Dessert - Barley Beanstick with Gingko $2.50
Hot/Cold Dessert - Barley Beanstick with Gingko $2.50
The Barley Beanstick with Gingko was simply yet delicious. Fans of this dish would not be disappointed with Ji De Chi's. It was not diluted and came with lots of beancurd skins.
Hot/Cold Dessert - Egg Drop Water Chestnut Paste $3
The Egg Drop Water Chestnut Paste was average. I would have preferred it more if the chestnut flavour was more intense.
Steam Egg White Walnut Paste (Hot) $4
What I normally try else where was Walnut Paste. Ji De Chi's Steam Egg White Walnut Paste was unique to me. The Walnut Paste was underneath the layer of steamed egg white.
Greem Tea Flavour Snowy Ice $5
One of the flavourite among many customers due to the hot weather was the Geen Tea Flavour Snowy Ice topped with Red Bean, Nata-De-Coco. Value for money and best for sharing with a group of friends!
There were hits and misses in Ji De Chi 记得吃's desserts. Those that were good were really well... so good! Try it for yourself!

Cocotte at Wanderlust Hotel (Little India)

Cocotte a 2 year old French restaurant located at the lobby of Wanderlust Hotel, is located in between Bugis and Little India MRT stations along 2 Dickson Road. I took about 15 minutes to walk over from Bugis MRT station cutting through Rochor Centre.
Wanderlust Hotel

The restaurant managed by Head Chef Anthony Yeoh was recently named as one of the top 500 restaurants in the 2013 edition of the Miele Guide.
Cocotte had a unique environment. An assortment of chairs with different colours and rustic timbre tables of brown and white colour. It gave a bight cheerful and country style ambience.
Pastry Counter
Cocotte has recently opened a Pastry Counter and will be serving Brunch everyday. The Pastry Counter will be opened from Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 10pm and on Sunday from 12pm to 3pm.
Pastry Menu
The Pastry Counter offers a wide variety of choices with its prices displayed clearly next to it.
Our table dining table, I like the brown timbre table.
Shredded Pork Confit $15
Shredded Pork Confit $15
The Shredded Pork Confit Sandwich - Confited Free Range Australian Pork Shoulder, Wholegrain Mustard Dressing, Fresh Tarragon, Parsley & Cucumber with Toasted Country Baguette. The filling in the sandwich were delicious. However, the downside was that the toasted country baguette was too hard compared to the tender soft fillings. The shredded pork confit deserved a special mentioned. Coming from the pork shoulder, it was tasty, moist and incredibly soft and tender. In addition, the cucumber provided a nice crunch.
French Onion "Soup" Sandwich $10
French Onion "Soup" Sandwich $10
The French inspired French Onion "Soup" Sandwich blew me away. It consisted of Caramelised Onion Confit, Melted Gruyere Cheese, Thyme Leaves and Toasted Country Baguette. Instead of a soup, you get the dry version which is probably grilled with gruyere cheese on top so that it melts. I believe that gruyere cheese was used not only because it is 'the' cheese which is traditionally used in French Onion Soup but also because of its rich, creamy, slightly smokey and nutty taste. If you are a fan of French Onion Soup, you have got to try this!
Grilled Boneless Chicken Leg With Fresh Herb & Garlic Butter $12
Grilled Boneless Chicken Leg With Fresh Herb & Garlic Butter $12
The Grilled Boneless Chicken Leg was served with Garlic Roasted Potatoes and French Beans. As the whole the dish was well executed. The boneless chicken leg was grilled perfectly. Crisp cracking chicken skin with juicy tender meat. The partner and I also particularly like the roasted potato. At $12, it is cheaper in price than most of restaurants and I would consider this quite value for money considering the quality!
Left to right: Chocolate Tart, Pistachio Creme Brulee, Nectarine Tart, Citron Lemon Tart
For desserts, we tried the Chocolate Tart, Pistachio Creme Brulee, Nectarine Tart and Citron Lemon Tart.

The Citron Lemon Tart was their best seller. On the first bite, it had a tangy sour taste that was too strong for my liking. The main reason was because this was made from lemon. However, I started to like it from the second bite downwards  It is a light dessert and is the type that the more you dig into it, the more you will like it. Among the four, this was our favourite. This is best accompanied by a cup of hot tea!

The Chocolate Tart was made of 72% Valrhona - dark chocolate. Chocolate fans will love as it is made of intense thick dark chocolate; not diluted. The bitterness of the chocolate is followed by a slight hint of sweetness. Best to share this!

Overall, I enjoyed the dining ambience at Cocotte. Quiet and cozy, Cocotte is a good place for a chat among friends or for a date. Foodwise, the quality of food was top notch. I am still thinking (craving) of the French Onion "Soup" Sandwich.

Thank you Grace for the invite.

Middle Road Pork Ribs Prawn Mee (Queen Street) Revisit

This is my second visit to Middle Road Pork Ribs Prawn Mee. Middle Road Pork Ribs Prawn Mee is located in a coffee shop behind Bugis+. It is located at then second coffee shop, the middle one among the row of three coffee shops.

There was a short queue at the stall. Luckily, we did not have to wait too long before it was our turn to order.
Prawn Pork Rib Noodles $4.00
Prawn Pork Rib Noodles $4.00
I ordered the Prawn Pork Rib Noodles which cost $4. The Prawn Pork Rib Noodles consisted of noodles, pork ribs, prawns (de-shelled), bean sprouts and pork lard. The prawns this time tasted different. They were hard and salty. The pork ribs on the other hand were tender.

The light brown soup / broth was robust, flavourful and tasty. However, this time I felt thirsty after drinking the soup.

Standard seems to have dropped.

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House (Sunshine Plaza)

Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House is located at Sunshine Plaza. Over the years, it had gained quite a number of fans including celebrities for its wanton mee.
Previously, Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House had two outlets. One located in Sunshine Plaza and the other at North Bridge Road just opposite Bugis Junction Shopping Centre. Recently; 1 year ago, their second outlet at North Bridge Road closed. This means that they are now located only in Sunshine Plaza.
Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House at Sunshine Plaza owns two units; directly opposite each other. There are lots of sitting capacity available.
Menu (a)
Menu (b)
Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House's revised menu. As you can see, they sell a wide variety of food. Their most well-known food are the Yun Tun Mee (Wanton Mee) and Fried Yun Tun (Fried Wanton).
Fried Yun Tun Noodles $4
The Fried Yun Tun Noodles comes in either $4 or $5. Regulars might notice that there has been a price increased since November 2011 . Previously, it was $3.50 or $4.50.
Fried Yun Tun Noodles $4
The Fried Yun Tun Noodles (Wanton Mee) was served with fried wantons, char siew and vegetables in dark soya sauce. The noodles was QQ, springy and well cooked. Mixed with the dark soya sauce, it was not dry and added flavour to the noodles. The char siew which is also an important ingredient in a plate of wanton mee was tender and flavourful However, some slices were slight hard.

The Fried Yun Tun (Fried Wanton) is a popular item in Parklane Zha Yun Tun Mee House. Many customers would order $2 worth of fried wantons to share. The fried wantons were addictive, however I wish that more meat was wrapped in it.
The  Fried Yun Tun Noodles (Wanton Mee) was also served with a small bowl of soup with two pieces of Yun Tun (Wantons) in it.
Old Cucumber Soup $3.80
Although the Old Cucumber Soup seemed full of ingredients, this was because it was served in a very small metal bowl. The ingredients include pork meat, old cucumber, carrot and wolf berries. I thought that the soup was real decent, but it was on the salty end.

Overall, I thought that the wanton mee was not bad and certainly worth making a trip down for it.

Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee 福乐炒虾面 (Sunshine Plaza)

If I am not mistaken, Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee 福乐炒虾面 opened at Sunshine Plaza early last year (2012). I have walked past Sunshine Plaza a couple of times and noticed this eatery because of the aroma of its Hokkien Mee.
I was thrilled when I found an opportunity to patronise this eatery on a weekday night for dinner at around 730pm. To my surprise, I was the only customer. When I walked past previously during lunch time, it was nearly always full.

Menu
Menu
Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee 福乐炒虾面 offers five items on their menus (exuding drinks), namely, Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee, Hor Fun, Oyster Omelette, Prawn Omelette and Home Made Ngo Hiong. In addition, customers can choose to order Set Meal A or Set Meal B which includes the Hokkien Mee with a Drink.

I ordered the Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee as it was their signature dish. It was served to me within a few minutes.
Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee $4.50 (Regular)
The Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee was the wet version type. The noodles were soaked in the brown gravy till they were all brownish in colour. If you look closely at the pictures, you might have noticed that a mixture of yellow noodles and thick beehoon (white) were used. Both type of noodles had turn brownish in colour. This was most probably because it was cooked earlier, left in the work and then re-heated when a customer comes in to make an order. In addition, the squids and prawns were overcooked. There was just 3 pieces of prawns and 3 pieces of squids in this plate of Hokkien Mee. If there were many customers or if the turnover was fast, this might not have been an issue (prawns/squid over cooked and noodles turning brownish in colour).

The gravy was another let down. It was not flavourful, instead was salty. In fact, there was an after taste which gave a strong hint that too much light soy sauce was added (or I will put it in another aspect, it tasted like light soy sauce except that it was thicker and more gooey). A very disappointing bowl of Hokkien Mee. At $4.50 the ingredients given (e.g. prawns, squids, egg) were miserable. The plate looks huge mainly because of the generous portion of the yellow noodles and thick beehoon.

Honestly, I doubt that I am going back to Fu Le Fried Hokkien Mee 福乐炒虾面 again. There are other eateries in Sunshine Plaza that I would rather visit such as Victor's Kitchen, Ichi Tei (Japanese Bento & Udon) and Aroy Dee Thai Cafe.

Just in case you do not know where Sunshine Plaza is, it is located in between Bugis and Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. It is a 5 minutes walk away from POMO and Peace Centre. It is just across the road from the new Singapore Pools building along Middle Road.

Four Seas Fried Mee & Rice•Fried Hor Fun (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre) 2nd Post

Four Seas Fried Mee & Rice•Fried Hor Fun is located in Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, near Bugis Junction. The stall specialises in dishing out Hor Fun, Fried Mee, Fish Head Soup, Slice Fish Soup and Seafood Soup. It had been almost 6 months since I patronised Four Seas Fried Mee & Rice•Fried Hor Fun. The main reason why it took me so long to visit this stall is not because of the food. Instead it was because I did not have the patience to wait. I still remember that the Hor Fun served here was outstanding, its gravy was tasty and flavourful.
This time round, I resisted the temptation to order their Hor Fun and was determined to be patient and order another dish; the Fish Head Soup with Rice. I queue for 35 minutes during lunch hour!
Fish Head Soup with Rice $4.50
At long last I got my food. The Fish Head Soup with Rice at $4.50 was value for money! (I shall come to this part on why it was value for money later.) Customers can choose the fish soup with preserved vegetable or bitter gourd. In this meal, I chose preserved vegetable.
Fish Head Soup
Fish Head Soup
You would have noticed from the above pictures, that they were very generous with the amount of fish head.  (there were so many pieces that I took a good half an hour savouring them despite the fact that I consider myself a as a fast eater.) The soup was filled with many different ingredients. Preserved vegetables, fish meat, spring onions and several other ingredients that I could not recognise. There was also small bits of pork lard added to enhanced the flavour of the soup and provided an additional texture (crispy and crunchy).

The soup was 'souperlicious'. Robust and packed with flavours! It was slightly salty (mainly due to the preserved vegetables) with a faint hint of sweetness. The fish head was fresh. More importantly, it was not fried. You may have noticed how many fish soup stalls fried their fish head to help mask the fishy taste which at times means that the fish is not fresh. Despite the slight saltiness of the soup (I am very particular when it comes to saltiness, what I feel is salty may not be so to you), I finished the whole bowl of soup.
Salted Bean Sauce and chilli Padi
The salted bean sauce mixed with chilli padi is a must for fish soup lovers. I cant' help but say how I wish that  all fish soup stalls provide this instead of chilli padi with light soy sauce. The taste is totally different and does not complement as well as the ones with salted bean sauce!

Four Seas Fried Mee & Rice•Fried Hor Fun did not disappoint. It was a fulfilling meal. The only negative aspect was the long waiting time. I will be keen to try their bitter gourd slice fish soup when I have an opportunity and of course patience. It was so value for money considering the quantity and quality of fish given.

ps: Even if the queue at this stall is short, you are likely to wait for a long time. This is because the regulars normally normally do not queue, they order directly with the lady, find a seat nearby and are served. Hence, the queue at the stall (visible to you) may not be the actual queue. I have also noticed that for some regulars they do not need to make payment when they receive the food. Instead they make payment after they have eaten. Integrity!
