Coconut Ice Cream at Chatuchak Weekend Market (Thailand, Bangkok)

So many people online have raved about this particular coconut ice cream stall located at Chatuchak Weekend Market. So much, we decided to put this as a must try 'eatery' when we visit Chatuchak Market.
This coconut ice cream stall; Coconuticecreamjj is located at Section 4, Soi 49, just in front of the toilet. It would be hard to miss this stall as you would be able to see many people walking past you carrying half a coconut shell with coconut ice cream in it. In addition, there was a perceptual queue at the stall.
The coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell cost 35 baht (S$1.40). It was served with two toppings (corn, peanuts, glutinous rice, sticky rice, nata de coco, atap seed, etc), coconut flesh/pulp and a complimentary cup of coconut water.
Coconut Ice Cream 35 Baht (S$1.40)
Coconut Ice Cream 35 Baht (S$1.40)
The Coconut Ice Cream was disappointing with nothing to shout about. The coconut ice cream was not as flavourful as the version we had earlier. In addition, it seemed diluted. As for the coconut flesh, it was tough and hard. Totally unsatisfying. It is certainly not the best. My advice would be to give this a skip and try the one at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market instead. It was way better (but of course please go at your own risk, as I do not know the opening hours of the boat vendor).
Toilet
Food for though: This was the toilet in front of the coconut ice cream stall. Look at how happy the Thai lady was even though she was managing the toilet. She was happily stacking the coins, oblivious of her surroundings. She seemed happy and satisfied with her job, despite the perception and low pay (ok..I am assuming). So how many of us are happy with our jobs (proper office with air condition and probably more pay). Ironic?

A&W Restaurant at Pantip Plaza (Thailand, Bangkok)

I know how some Singaporeans would make it a point to visit A&W whenever they are in Bangkok, Batam or Kuala Lumpur. I am no exception. Here's the good news for A&W fanatics who need their A&W fix. There are several A&W restaurants in Bangkok and one of the restaurant is located 5 minutes walk away from Platinum Fashion Mall!

This A&W restaurant is located at Level 1 of Pantip Plaza (also known as The Computer City). All you have to do is walk out of Platinum Mall and then walk along the main road; Petchaburi Road (follow the flow of the traffic). There is no need to cross the main road. Instead you would just need to cross 3 small alley roads and you would have reached Pantip Plaza. You would be able to spot the A&W signage once you are outside the plaza.
As this was for our tea break, we ordered the Super Waffle Combo Set 135 Baht (S$5.62) which consisted of a Root Beer Float (which we up-sized), Curly Fries (Small) and Super Waffle (Chocolate). In addition, we also ordered another Curly Fries (large) 55 Baht (S$2.29) and Half Waffle (Strawberry) 55 Baht (S$2.29). We did not order any fried chicken as we were just too full.
Root Beer Float
You may wish to note know that it has been sometime since the writer had A&W. So this post is definitely biased. =P

The signature A&W's Root Beer Float which most of us are familiar with is served in a A&W mug with a scoop of vanilla ice cream added into the Root Beer. Just like how I always remember it (when A&W still existed in Ang Mo Kio), there was a layer of foam on top. Shiok!
Curly Fries
Another favourite of mine is the Curly Fries! It is me? But it's not as curly as before. Nevertheless, this tasted so good (kfc new solgan)! I have not had this for a long long time.
Half Waffle (Strawberry)
Super Waffle (Chocolate)
Waffle with ice cream, another A&W signature dish! The waffles whether Super Waffle or Half Waffle are both served with 2 scoops of ice cream! The waffle was great as it was freshly made and was crispy on the outside. The warm and cold combination of waffle and ice cream was a perfect combination that's hard to go wrong (even with ordinary ice cream)! Maple syrup are available too for those who wish to enhance the taste further.

Glad to have my A&W craving satisfied! I wonder when will A&W make a come back to Singapore.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market (Thailand, Bangkok)

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
There are several floating markets near Bangkok. The most famous floating and is known to be one of the largest floating market popular among tourists is the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market located in Damnoen Saduak District in the Ratchaburi Province. The floating market is around half an hour drive (subjected to traffic conditions) from Maeklong Railway Market.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market  (Boarding Area)
Everyday, the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is crowded with of vendors boats plying the canal selling all kind of stuff from souvenirs, vegetables, fruits, live snakes and even food that requires cooking such as phad thai! Do note, if you are buying souvenirs, you would need to bargain as the prices can be marked up by as high as 80%.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market  (Boarding Area)
The ideal time for visiting this floating market is before 9am, before the tourist crowd starting coming in. As we visited the Maeklong Railway Market first to witness the rail train travelling through the market, we only arrived at the floating market just before 10am. The part of the canal which was used for boarding and alighting was congested (see photo above)! Look at the number of boats (the boat fee was covered in the deal)! Part of the reason why it was so congested was because there were many vendor boats selling all type of goods and food. In a way, it was a kind of tourist trap and not everyone would like this place.

Now, if you are starting to think that since its so crowded, you should skip this, read on. This is because some of the food sold here by the boat vendors made this trip so worthwhile!
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
It was still relatively congested as we were near the boarding area.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
Once we got past the crowd, we were able to tour the less congested canals. There were less vendor boats and more shop houses which were located just next to the canal. If you would like to purchase any items, you can request for the boat to be stopped just next to the shops.

If you are starting to feel that this place looks familiar, well it is because this was the place where the James Bond; 'The Man With The Golden Gun' and Nicolas Cage's 'Bangkok Dangerous' movies were filmed.
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
Although we did not purchase any souvenirs while on the boat ride, we stopped twice to purchase food! Once for Grilled Banana and another for Mango Sticky Rice!

We bought the Grilled Banana from the boat vendor which was stationed near the boarding area (congested area). This boat was obvious as it had a yellow sign which shouted out what it's owner was selling - Grilled Banana. All the other boat vendors which I saw did not have any sign stating what they were selling. The Grilled Banana boat vendor had a small stove in the middle of her boat for grilling the bananas.
Grilled Banana 40 Baht (S$1.67)
The Grilled Banana cost 40 Baht (S$1.67). Several pieces of grilled bananas cut into smaller pieces were served. As we 'cruised' down the murky water, we savoured on this snack. It was a struggle finishing it as we all were more used to the fried banana - Goreng Pisang.
Mango Sticky Rice 50 Baht (S$2.08)
We also bought Mango Sticky Rice from a boat vendor while taking the boat ride. There were many boat vendors selling this product. The Mango Sticky Rice cost 50 Baht (S$2.08). It was our first Mango Sticky Rice since we arrived in Bangkok and it did not disappoint! The mango was so fresh - sweet and juicy. The sticky rice topped with sesame seed was soft, moist and flavourful. Each grain of rice was coated with coconut milk which made a whole world of difference to the taste. I must say that it was superb.

After my trip in Bangkok, I realised that it was hard to find a lousy Mango Sticky Rice in  Bangkok, even those bought along the streets tasted delicious!
Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
After our boat ride, we walked over and crossed the road to access another part of the floating market (for clearer direction, please refer to the map located at the end of this post). This stretch was where you could find some of the best food boat vendors! From selling fruits, desserts to fully cooked meals such as char siew rice and even tom yum noodles.
Kway Teow and Tom Yum Noodles' Boat Vendor
As we walked along the stretch, we spotted a row of customers (around 7 customers) seated down next to each other in front of this boat vendor. Each customer was sitting along the river on small stools with either a bowl of Kway Teow or Tom Yum Noodles! Although this caught our eye, we hesitated for quite a long time worrying about the hygiene. In fact, we left and came back only after mustering enough courage and succumbing to temptation. This was the only two boat vendor which could garnered a crowd of customers. The other was the Coconut Ice Cream Vendor (which I shall elaborate on later in this post).
Kway Teow 40 Baht (S$1.67)
The Kway Teow aka Boat Noodles was simple yet delicious. A hearty and comfortable bowl of noodles. It was a joy slurping down the Kway Teow which was thin and smooth. There were pieces of chicken meat, fish cakes, beansprouts, liver, pork lard, spring onions and peanuts added inside. The peanuts gave this dish a crunchy bite while the pork lard enhanced the taste further. The liver also deserved a mention as it was fresh! There are the usual condiments set located at the side for customers to adjust the taste to their liking.
Tom Yum 40 Baht (S$1.67)
Tom Yum 40 Baht (S$1.67)
The Tom Yum Kway Teow came with similar ingredients. The difference was the taste of condiments added in it. The soup was tastier and more complex; sourish yet spicy. We were shocked when we saw the local sitting next to us adding several spoonful of sugar into her Tom Yum! Not bad quite a decent bowl of kway teow considering the location and price.

When we were eating, we saw someone washing the bowls and utensils using a piped water located at the side of the river. It felt good to be assured that they did not use the river water to wash the bowls and utensils.
Coconut Ice Cream Boat Vendor
Further down this same stretch, you can purchase an authentic Coconut Ice Cream served in a coconut shell from this boat vendor! We were debating whether to go for this as we were worried about the hygiene. Luckily, we gave this a try. What a pleasant find!

The boat vendor first chop the coconut into half and drain the coconut juice into the river. After that, he would scrap the flesh of the coconut and leave it in the shell. He then proceeded on to scoop three scoops of coconut flavoured ice cream into the coconut shell on top of the pieces of coconut flesh / pulp. As shown in the above picture, the boat vendor scooped the ice cream from a tall, round stainless steel canister which was used to keep the ice cream frozen. Lastly, he sprinkled roasted nuts on top of the ice cream.
Coconut Ice Cream 30 Baht (S$1.25)
This Coconut Ice Cream is a must try! The ice cream was impressive. It was full of milky fragrant coconut flavour; not diluted. In addition, the coconut flesh was so soft, tender and flavourful. The roasted nuts added on top added an extra crunchy and addictive element into this dessert.

It was delicious and refreshing! Moreover, considering the price, it was so cheap! We should have bought more of this! This is the BEST Coconut Ice Cream we had in Bangkok! If you have read about how awesome the coconut ice cream at Chatuchak weekend market  tastes, you really need to give this a try.

Prior to this trip, from our desktop research, we got to know that the coconut ice cream at Chatuchak weekend market was highly raved about. We thought that the one at Chatuchak would be much better than this. But well, we were wrong! This Coconut Ice Cream which we bought from Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was way better! I will post on the coconut ice cream from Chatuchak market at a subsequent post. (Refer to this link for the post)

Overall, we had no regrets purchasing the Half-Day Damnoen Saduak Floating Market & Mae Klong Railway Market Tour deal on Deal.com.sg. The tour guide Vorn did a great job. He was professional, friendly, safe driver and provided great service.  At $26 per pax, it was a value for money deal! In addition, I was glad that there was no additional charges. The boat fee was included in the deal. Tips for the tour guide were at customers' own discretion.

Do note the food / snacks expenses in this post was not included in the tour.

Please note for the parts in Italic. I do not get any benefits and am not paid to writing this. I am just writing this because I was satisfied with the half day tour.

After You Dessert Café at Siam Paragon (Thailand, Bangkok)

Shibuya Honey Toast with Honey Syrup 165 Baht (S$6.88)
After You Dessert Café; a cafe chain started by a 30 year old Thai lady called Kulapat “May” Kanokwatanawan has been highly raved about online. The cafe specialises in serving toasts and desserts. After You Dessert Café has several outlets in Bangkok. We visited the outlet in Siam Paragon (next to Siam Exchang BTS station) on a weekday at 930pm. The cafe is located at the basement of Siam Paragon, the same level as where Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is located at.
After You Dessert Café at Siam Paragon was modern, cozy, clean and bright. With its wooden furnishing, it looked so inviting and homely.
Although we arrived at 930pm, the cafe was full. There were a few benches located in front of the cafe which gave an indication of the crowd during peak hours. Fortunately for us, the screen located in front of the cafe started flashing our queue number soon after we got the queue number. We were lead to a table located at a corner of the cafe. The cafe seemed popular among the younger generation.
Menu
Menu
This was the menu on the table. The words were relatively small in size. If you would prefer you can get the A3 menu located at the entrance. It was more enticing as there were colourful photos of the toasts and desserts on it.

Customers would need to order and make payment at the counter.
Honey Syrup and Utensils
There were two staff at the counter where I made my orders and payment. One staff keyed in my order and collected payment while stood behind listening and preparing the utensils for my table. When I got back to my table, the utensils and honey syrup was already brought back to my table! So efficient! We were given the honey syrup as we ordered the signature Shibuya Honey Toast.
Chocolate Lava 145 Baht (S$6)
The Chocolate Lava priced at 145 baht (S$6) was one of the items highly raved about on the internet.

The Chocolate Lava consisted of a small, soft, warm chocolate sponge cake with molten chocolate in it. A scoop of vanilla ice cream and chunks of strawberries were served with it.
Chocolate Lava 145 Baht (S$6)
Look at the molten chocolate flowing  (oozing) out! The chocolate sponge cake was delicious! It was not sweet and not overly fluffy. The molten chocolate was out of this world. The bitter warm chocolate flowed out slowly as it was so viscous. Each bite of the sponge cake together with the molten chocolate literally got us on a high. Irresistible! Shiok!

The vanilla ice cream deserved a mentioned too as it was not only sweet and yet flavourful.
Shibuya Honey Toast 165 Baht (S$6.88)
The signature Shibuya Honey Toast cost 165 Baht (S$6.88).

The Shibuya Honey Toast was essentially a thick big chunk of oven baked toast with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and sugar icing on top. At the side, there was another scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. As you can see from the photo above, the toast has been partially sliced into 9 pieces.

The toast, the most essential component (which can make or break the whole experience) was very well executed; baked to perfection! The exterior of the toast was crispy and slight hard (an important factor for not only the taste department, but also to ensure that the weight of the ice cream on top does not cause the bread to sink in) whereas the interior was warm, soft, fluffy and full of buttery fragrant! Yes, butter was probably added into the toast when it was still hot just before serving!

The burst of different temperatures, flavours and textures in one mouthful was overwhelming (in a positive way) as the different senses in the tongue were teased. Superb! Even the non-dessert person in the group praised this.
Matcha Toast 195 Baht (S$8.13)
The Matcha Toast was similar to the Shibuya Honey Toast. It cost slightly more than the Shibuya Honey Toast. The main difference was that instead of vanilla ice cream, Matcha (green tea) ice cream was used. In addition, Matcha powder was sprinkled on top of the ice cream. The Matcha ice cream was surprisingly good with a great balance in sweetness and green tea flavour. Outstanding!

As the portion of the toasts are big, this is best shared between 2 to 3 persons.
Although we might have seemed to have ordered too much, we polish off all 3 items! The tag line in After You Dessert Café says it all "There's always room for desserts".

There was free flow of ice tea at the side of the cafe for all customers.

I highly recommend After You Dessert Café! This is a die die die must try!  We had no regrets ordering the 3 dishes. Ironically, this place which I am highly recommending does not serves authentic Thai Food. Price wise, although it was on the higher end, I thought that it was money well spent (worthwhile) as the food good! The Chocolate Lava and Shibuya Honey Toast were totally out of this world. Do give it a try and let me know what you think.

ps: if you intend to patronise during peak hours, be prepared to queue/wait  for as long as half an hour.

Skyve Wine Bistro (Newton)

Skyve Wine Bistro previous known as Skyve Elementary Bistro serves modern European cuisine, using sous vide in most of its cooking. Whether it is cooking of meat (poulet, lamb, beef, pork or duck) or vegetables, sous vide is used. Sous vide is a cooking technique in which food is cooked in airtight plastic bag in a water bath. The water path is kept at a constant temperature, normally lower than what is required for cooking. Normally, the food needs to be cooked in the water bath for a longer period of time, sometimes as long as 72 hours. This cooking technique ensures that the food are cooked evenly, the nutrients are not lost and resulting in a juicer end product, retaining the natural flavours.
Skyve Wine Bistro located at Winstedt Road in the old Monks Hill Secondary School compound is 10 minutes walk from Newton MRT station.

The restaurant has an extensive list of more than 70 labels of wine in its wine cellar
Chivas, anyone?
Lounge section
The restaurant has both alfresco and indoor dining. For indoors dining, the restaurant is split into lounge section and a main dining section. The lounge section had retro style chairs, sofa and tables. An ideal place for chilling out in a causal and cozy setting. There will be a live band performing at this section every Wednesday and Friday night. As for the main dining area, that is where the proper chairs and tables are, for more formal occasions.
The Sleeping Oysters: Mentaiyaki, Chilean, Kilpatrick ($34 for half a dozen)
The meal started off with The Sleeping Oysters: Mentaiyaki, Chilean, Kilpatrick ($34 for half a dozen) and several appetisers. The Mentaiyaki Oyster with metaiko, ebiko, lemon juice and aioli. The Chilean Oyster with serrano, lime juice, red wine vinegar and cilantro (also known as coriander). The Kilpatrick Oyster with bacon, worchestershire and chives.

What I like about the oysters was that they were fresh, soft, plump and juicy. My favorite was the Japanese inspired Mentaiyaki Oyster. The British inspired Kilpatrick Oyster on the other hand was not my cup of tea. The hardness of the bacon did complement the soft oyster. In addition, the intense flavour of the ingredients used overwhelmed the other flavours.
Petuna and Ume Somen $20
The Petuna and Ume Somen $20, seared petuna with ebiko, mango, chilli, sesame yuzu dressing, cold somen and mesclun was very well executed. This appetiser could be easily mistaken as a main course. The petuna stole the show in this dish. I nearly when 'wow' as I ate this. Underneath the crisp top, the pentuna was incredibly succulent with its natural flavour fully retained in the flesh. It was very fresh with no fishy taste. The ebiko gave a nice crunch to the Ume Somen.
Skyve Beef Tartare $22
The Skyve Beef Tartare $22 was an interesting dish. The beef tartare (minced raw beef) was seared on the outside leaving the interior entirely raw. It was then served with truffle egg yolk and cilantro dust on top with flat bread, ancho chilli aioli and thyme sea salt at the side. Customers who ordered this dish would need to thoroughly mix the beef tartare with the truffle egg yolk and cilantro dust. It was like making mashed potato (if unsure, you can ask the staff to do this for you). After that, scoop some of it onto the flat bread and add the other sides in according to your preference. For those who do not like raw beef, you may still like this as it had a mixture of flavours; distinct truffle aroma along with a little spiciness and saltiness in one mouthful.
Truffle and Thyme Fries $12
Truffle and Thyme Fries $12 served with Truffle Oil, Thyme Salt and lots of shaved Granda Padano was quite good. The thick cut fries ensure that one could be able to get a good bite. In addition, each piece was infused with the aroma of truffle oil. I have a weakness for potatoes and could not stop myself reaching out for more!
Spicy Kalbi Beef Short Ribs $36
Among the main courses, Spicy Kalbi Beef Short Ribs $36 was the best seller in Skyve Wine Bistro.
Spicy Kalbi Beef Short Ribs $36
The beef short ribs was sous vide before being glazed with sweet, spicy kalbi. It was then served with sauteed brocollini (similar to broccoli), and crispy sweet potato and yam ribbons. The beef short ribs was not my personal favourite as the flavours were on the stronger end, overwhelming the meaty/natural flavour. My favourite part of this main course was the crispy sweet potato and yam ribbons which were incredibly addictive. You will not be able to stop at one.
Lamb Rack $40
As for the Lamb Rack $40, the lamb rack was grilled and served with radish, pumpkin and chargrilled tomato momotaro. This was my favourite as the lamb rack was well executed and its not often you can find one that is so well executed. The ratio of lean meat to fats were just right. In addition, the meat was soft and tender, and a little sweet and savoury.
Sous Vide Poulet $34
Sous Vide Poulet $34
The Sous Vide Poulet $34 glazed with apricot based sauce, and served with baby vegetables, candied pecans and pommes (potato) puree was also very well executed. The sous vide style resulted in smooth, folk tender and succulent flesh. Comfort food and a safe choice for most people.
Polenta Mushroom Stack $34
Polenta Mushroom Stack $34
The Polenta Mushroom Stack $34 is specially created for vegetarians. It consisted of grilled portobello with polenta cakes served with mushroom fricassee, seasonal vegetables and pesto. This was impressive both in terms of appearance and taste. It would be great if the polenta cake was less powdery and crumbly. One of the better vegetarian dish I have tried.
Inspired by Red $12
Inspired by Red $12 would be a favourite among ladies or those with sweet tooth. Beautifully created, it consisted of raspberry sorbet with strawberry parfait, sous vide strawberry in balsamic vinegar, flower tuile and dehydrated raspberry. With such a presentation, this would be a dessert to order if you would want to impress your other half on a special (romantic) occasion.
Snicker Bar $12
The Snicker Bar $12 consisted of salted caramel pudding, peanut butter, chocolate ganache and feuilletine layered cake with flambed bananas and vanilla gelato. It looked better than it tasted. This would be a dessert that you either love or hate. The flavours were just too heavy and intense for my liking. It would be better to share this among 2 to 3 persons.
Mango & Cheese Semifreddo $12
The Mango & Cheese Semifreddo $12 was my favourite dessert! Rippled frozen mousse with frozen lime foam on top and crunchy sablee cookie at the bottom. This dessert left a deep impression. It was light and well balanced in terms of taste. As for the texture, I really like how you can get to enjoy the different textures in 1 mouthful. The top was pillow soft and fluffy, the middle layer was slightly soft and semi solid while the bottom was crunchy and solid. A perfect way to end the meal!

Overall, I was most impressed with the meal. I could sense the thought and effort that has gone into each dish. The presentation of each dish was perfect. Each dish was so enticing as they looked bright, vibrant and colourful. Although the price was on the higher end, I can't fault that as the quality of the ingredients were top notch. In addition, most of the food retained their natural flavours and were very well executed. Personally, I think that Skyve Wine Bistro will be an ideal place for celebrating special occasions with your other half. Great ambiene and great food (in terms of both quality and taste).

I heard that the Asian Inspired Confit of Duck is a best seller. It will be on my to try list when I next visit.

Thank you Michelle and Celine for the invite and hosting FoodieFC.
