Prince Coffee House 太子咖啡座 (Beach Road)

Prince Coffee House 太子咖啡座 has been in operation since the 1970s. It first started out in Shaw House, before moving to Coronation Plaza and now Beach Road. It is located just a few units away from Blanco Prawn Noodle

If you are observant, you will notice that the owner and some of the staff serving looks like those in the photos (in their younger days of course).

In terms of decoration, its quite unique. Simple and quiet place away from the bustling city.

Set Lunch
Set Lunch Menu from 11am to 3pm. No worries if none of items on the set menu are your cup of tea. There are lots of a la carte dishes to order such as Hor Fun, Rice, Mee, Western and Chinese dishes. You can top up S$4 to the a la carte dishes to make them into set meal (inclusive of soup, garlic bread, drink and dessert).
Takeaway Menu
I ordered the Fried Beef Hor Fun $6.80 and topped up $4 to make it a set meal.
Garlic Bread
The Garlic Bread was a let down. They should have toasted it before serving and the garlic flavour was mild..
Soup
Creamy soup with slices of button mushroom and small chunk of chicken. Too thick and creamy for my liking. What a disappointing start to the meal.
Fried Beef Hor Fun $6.80 (a la carte)
Just as I was losing hope, the next dish wowed me. The Fried Beef Hor Fun was delish! It taste so much better than how it looks like in the picture. The Hor Fun was very well fried the flavour of smoky wok-hei infused in it. The generous amount of beef given was soft and very tender. In addition, the delectable sauce enhanced the taste further. This has got to be one of the best Hor Fun in Singapore!
Dessert - Yam Cake
I have read online about how popular that their Yam cake was. Hence, I was excited when the Yam Cake was given as part of the dessert. But I was not impressed, the yam flavour was not robust enough. A forgettable dish.
Drink - Tea
I am not too impressed thus far. I will have to try their other a la carte dishes to get a better conclusion. The next time I come, I will probably skip topping up $4 to make it a set meal and just order the Fried Beef Hor Fun or some other a la carte dishes such as their chicken chop.

  1. The fried mee hoon and yam cake looks so tantalizing. Must try if I have a chance.

  4. Used to dine at this restaurant regularly, as it was near my school. It was located at Coronation Plaza level 2. The decor inside was very nice, lots of mirrors on the walls (creating a nice illusion of bigger space) and retro hardwood furniture.

There was a special discount for students and free flow of coke or lemon tea. It was also a great location for student couples on a date.

I've always wanted to dine at its new Beach Road outlet, but kept procrastinating, even though I had walked past the restaurant many times.

Hopefully, I can get to it some day. Let's hope the food standard hasn't dropped too much. Although I find it regrettable that the new outlet doesn't replicate the excellent ambience at Coronation Plaza.

P.S: Back in the day when Singapore was a British colony, the Hainanese folks were employed to cook for our British colonial masters: politicians and military personnel etc. After independence, these Hainanese folks, with their accumulated culinary experience, started opening eateries selling western cuisine. Even your humble western food stall at a hawker centre can probably trace its roots to these Hainanese folks.
