Soyako (Bukit Timah)

Soyako is a drink and dessert stall located in Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre. If you looked its signboard and menu carefully, you would have noticed that there were a few unique selling points (USPs) which it was trying to broadcast.
The USPs are:
- Freshly Made;
- So Fresh, So Good
- No Preservative & Gypsum Powder added
- 100% Canada imported superior soya bean

Well, the last USP gave the hint of what this stall sold did it not? This stall specialise in selling soya bean drinks and beancurd. There also sold other items such as grass jelly, peanut soup with rice balls and lime juice.

I think the big plus point was definitely the fact that their beancurd and soya bean drink were freshly made with no preservatives.
Menu (price list)
The menu (price list) was clearly displayed.
Beancurd with Peanut (warm) $2
My partner ordered the Beancurd with Peanut (warm) $2. As I did not order this, I did not knew what the stall looks like, neither did I knew about its USP.

To be frank, I was quite surprised that that was such a combination and was puzzled why my partner ordered this.
Beancurd with Peanut $2
I was blown away when I tried the Beancurd with Peanut. Despite how ordinary and plain it looked, it tasted extraordinary. The texture of the beancurd was so silky, smooth and fine. In addition, it was so soft that it had a melt in the mouth sensation. The peanuts topping were very smooth and soft. Taste wise, it was just right with a strong soya bean flavour and was not too sweet.

This bowl of Beancurd with Peanut was very well executed. It was just so good that despite how warm the hawker centre was, we still enjoyed this bowl of warm beancurd with peanut! You can literally feel the love and passion put into making this bowl of beancurd. I know this sounds silly, but still I am going to rate this as a die die must try! I can eat this everyday!

Lim Hai Sheng Cooked Food 林海盛熟食 (Ang Mo Kio)

When I was still schooling, I used to visit Lim Hai Sheng Cooked Food 林海盛熟食 (located at Ang Mo Kio Hawker Centre) for its carrot cake. Back then I remember that the stall was popular and there would always be a perceptual queue even though only 1 item was sold; White Carrot Cake.
Recently, I made a visit to this stall. It has been ages since I had this carrot cake. I was surprised to notice that there was just 1 person in the queue.
The person cooking the carrot cake seems to have changed. Used to be a lady.
Carrot Cake $2
Ordered a $2 Carrot Cake.
Carrot Cake $2
The standard of the carrot cake has deteriorated. It was not as fragrant as what I remember it used to be. In addition, the amount of preserved radish (chye poh) mixed in it was very little. I doubt I will  be ordering this again anytime soon.

Tims Restaurant & Cafe (Toa Payoh)

Tims Restaurant & Cafe a Nepalese restaurant serves Nepalese and Western cuisine. The restaurant reminds me of Jack's Place. But unlike Jack's Place, Tims Restaurant & Cafe is located under a HDB block and is a non air-conditioned restaurant. The restaurant is located 10 minutes walk away from Braddell MRT staiton.
Daily Set Lunch Menu
The prices on its Daily Set Lunch Menu and Ala Carte Menu are all nett prices, which means there are no additional charges such as service charge and GST as these has already been factored in.

The three of us ordered Chicken MoMo $8.50, Spaghetti Bolognaise Set $10 and Fish & Chips Set $11 (Daily Set Lunch), and Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11. The Set Lunch consisted of Soup of the Day, Main Course set, Dessert and Tea/Coffee.
Chicken MoMo $8.50
The Chicken MoMo $8.50 was essentially Nepalese style meat dumplings with coriander, ginger, garlic. It is served together with home made "Nepalese Achar". It was similar to our Chinese cuisine Xiao Long Bao. The difference is that the skin is thicker and there are no broth in the dumplings. The Chicken MoMo was unique. Although I felt that the skin was too thick, the meat fillings inside was wonderfully executed. Dipping the Chicken MoMo into the achar (made of tomatoes, herbs and spices) made it just so addictive!
Minestrone Soup with Garlic Bread
The Soup of the Day was Minestrone Soup. The soup was served with slices of Garlic Bread. Their Garlic Bread fared better than Jack's Place as the garlic spread was thicker.
Minestrone Soup
The Minestrone Soup was filled with lots of ingredients at the bottom of the bowl. Look at the amount of carrots, celery and strands of spaghetti. Unlike other Minestrone soup, this had a unique herbal spice flavour.
Spaghetti Bolognaise Set $10
The Spaghetti Bolognaise Set $10 which my friend ordered. I did not try this. It was quite a big serving.
Fish & Chips Set $11
The Fish & Chips Set $11 may not be the best, but it was decently executed! The plus point would be that it was not oily. In addition, they portion was pretty generous considering the price.
Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11
I ordered the Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11 which consisted of roasted chicken with rice, achar and vegetables.
Authentic Nepali Roast Chicken $11
I was very impressed with this dish. It was easily the best dish! The chicken was marinated and roasted to perfection. The chicken was meaty and so tender and succulent!
We ended off the meal with a cup of tea (from the set meal) and this cake.

Overall, I was very impressed with Tims Restaurant & Cafe! I am not an expect on whether the food here was authentic or not. But taste wise, I just love it. Price wise, it's so value for money considering the quality and amount of food. I will be back for more!

Ming Fa Fishball 明发鱼圆 (Upper Thomson Road)

Ming Fa Fishball 明发鱼圆 (Upper Thomson Road) also know as Meng Kitchen 日夜小厨 is located along Upper Thomson Road, around 10 to 15 minutes away from Marymount MRT station. Ming Fa Fishball 明发鱼圆 is famous for their Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles (aka Bak Chor Mee).
It is located along the same row of shop houses as The Roti Prata HouseSalted Caramel and Udders! This place enjoys a higher traffic during evenings and at night compared to the day. Many Singaporeans would come to this area for supper. Hence, if you would like to satisfy your Bak Chor Mee craving at night, do be prepared to queue and jostle for a table.
Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles $4
As I visited at 4pm on Sunday, there was no queue and the place was only one quarter. Who eats Bak Chor Mee at such a timing anyway.

I ordered the $4 Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles (Bak Chor Mee) with Mee Pok. It was served with a bowl of minced meat soup topped with seaweed and spring onions.
Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles (Mee Pok) $4
This bowl of Bak Chor Mee consisted of a meatball, minced meat, braised mushrooms, liver with bits of pork lard and spring onion.

The Mee Pok was cooked just right. Each strand of noodles was springy and firm. The chilli and vinegar base which was well conjugated complemented well with the noodles.
Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles (Mee Kia) $4
Another bowl, this time a $4 Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles with Mee Kia.

Overall, it was an enjoyable bowl of Bak Chor Mee. Now you know where to get this at any time of the day even during the wee hours of the morning.

Tyre Cafe (Wilkie Edge) (Closed)

*Edited Nov 2015: Closed*
The Tyre Cafe is a tyre concept cafe located at Wilkie Edge selling both Chinese and Japanese Cuisine. With its bright orange signage, it was easy to spot.
If you notice the setting of the restaurant, you would notice why it was called Tyre cafe.
Well, this is the reason. In addition, there were posters of sports cars plastered on the walls.
Hin Hwa Mee Sua $7.90
Their specialty is the Hin Hwa Mee Sua $.790 a 80 year old family recipe from Putian, (part of Fujian Province) in China.
Hin Hwa Mee Sua $7.90
The Hin Hwa Mee Sua was served with chicken, omelette, mushrooms, seaweeds, peanuts, fried shallots and mee sua in a clear light brown chicken broth.
Hin Hwa Mee Sua $7.90
The Hin Hwa Mee Sua was delicious! Light, healthy, comforting and homely dish. The flavours and texture complemented each other well. This is a must try! No wonder its their specialty dish! I can eat this everyday and yet not get sick of this!

Late last year, the cafe also had Deal.com.sg deals. I bought two vouchers which cost $5.90 each. The vouchers allowed me to purchase Saba Fish Bento Set / Teriyaki Chicken Bento Set which also came with tofu, edamame, takoyaki balls, fruits and green tea.
Saba Fish Bento Set
This is the Saba Fish Bento Set.
Edamame, Takoyaki Balls
The Edamame and Takoyaki Balls.
Saba Fish Bento Set
The Saba Fish was very well executed. It was crisp and fresh.
Teriyaki Chicken Bento Set
This is the Teriyaki Chicken Bento Set.
Teriyaki Chicken Bento Set
Although both bento sets were decent, they were not fantastic. However, at $5.90, the sets were so value for money! Personally, I preferred the Saba Fish.

Needless to say, my favourite dish is the Hin Hwa Mee Sua!

French Onion "Soup" Sandwich Recipe

I believe that most of us have heard French Onion Soup. Some of us have also drank such a soup. But have you tried French Onion "Soup" Sandwich before?

A year back, when I went to Cocotte at Wanderlust Hotel, I ate the French Onion "Soup" Sandwich which blew me away. I was so impressed that I decided to try making this.
French Onion "Soup" Sandwich
Below is the recipe for making 2 pieces of The French Onion "Soup" Sandwich / Bread. It was difficult to make and required lots of patience.
Ingredients required
Ingredients required:
1) Two big yellow / red onions
2) 1/2 tbsp olive oil, to taste
3) 1/2 tbsp butter, to taste
5) Thyme leaves, to taste
6) Black pepper, to taste
5) Salt, to taste
6) 2 slices of bread
7) Grated or diced Gruyere cheese
Grated or diced Gruyere cheese
Items required:
1) Pot / pan (can use non-stick pot/pan too)
2) Knife

To make Caramelised Onion (this is the hard part) :
1) Trim off the ends and peel off the skin of the onions. Cut the onions into half and slice the onion.
2) Heat up the pot / pan using medium heat. Add olive oil and butter.
3) Add the sliced onions followed by a pinch of thyme leaves, black pepper and salt.
4) Stir them well so that they are coated with oil and butter. Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot / pan to allow the onion to sweat.
5) Open the lid every 5 minutes and give it a stir. The onions will slowly start turning brown. After 20 to 30 minutes, the onions would become soft and golden brown in colour. If the onions start sticking to the bottom of the pot / pan, it means that the pot / pan is too hot. You would need to reduce the heat and/or add a little water (or soup stock) and give it a stir. You should refrain from stirring it too much to get the evenly golden brown onions.
6) Once the onions are soft and golden brown in colour, you can add soup stock (enhance the flavour, allowing the onions to absorb the flavours) and turn up the heat to evaporate the soup stock.
7) Once the soup stock has evaporated, turn off the heat and remove the caramelised onion from the pot / pan to prevent it from being cooked further.

To make French Onion "Soup" Sandwich:
8) Grill one side of the two slices bread on a non-stick pan (use a small amount of butter if you do not have a non-stick pan) and slightly brown it. After that remove the bread from the heat.
9) Spread the caramelised onion onto the side of the bread which has been grilled.
10) Add grated / diced Gruyere on top of the caramelised onion.
11) Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 with the 2nd piece of bread
12) Toast or grill the 2 pieces of bread until the Gruyere has melted and it is ready to be served (if you have Happy Call Pan, it would be useful for this step as you can close it and trap the heat in).

The below pictures show some of the cooking process:
