Liang Court Wednesdays' Food Tasting Trails: Marutama Ramen and Saizeriya

Liang Court is currently having an event called Wednesdays' Food Tasting Trails which will be held till 7 August 2013. Diners can purchase the Food Trail Coupon for $30 at the Customer Service Counter and get to enjoy 3 different set meals from 3 different restaurants in Liang Court and also a free beer.

The first restaurant  has been pre-selected, diners can choose their second and third stops from  any of the remaining 11 participating F&B shops. I received a copy of the Food Trail Guide and two complimentary Wednesdays' Food Tasting Trails Coupons. As shown above, the coupon shows that my first restaurant (pre-selected) is Tamoya. 
Marutama Ramen
Looking through all the set meals in the Guide, I decide to try Marutama Ramen first (there is no need to utilise the coupon in sequence).

The Liang Court's Wednesdays' Food Trail Coupon allowed me to try the Zenbu-nose (U.P. $18). It was essentially the signature Marutama Ramen with all toppings! The toppings are the Kakuni (Stewed Pork Belly), Sliced Roasted Pork, Aosa (Seaweed), Negi (Spring Onions) and Half-Boiled Seasoned Egg. 

Those who frequent Marutama Ramen would know that the signature Marutama Ramen (without toppings) would have cost $12 and an addition $6 is required if all toppings were added.

Roasted Pork (Char Siew)
Three big pieces of Sliced Roasted Pork (Char Siew) were given. The roasted pork had quite a good balance of lean meat and fat ratio. So much so that it was tender.
Kakuni (Stewed Pork Belly)
The Kakuni (Stewed Pork Belly) as it should be had a higher proportion of fats to lean meat compared to the Char Siew.
Half-boiled Seasoned Egg
The Half-boiled Seasoned Egg would have been perfect if its yolk was runny as they had got the marination right. It was a pity that it was slightly overcooked and the yolk was not runny.
Zenbu-nose
This bowl of Zenbu-nose ramen came with lots of ingredients like how it should be. If you were to take the cost of the Food Trail Coupon (i.e. $30) and divide by 3 restaurants, it means that essentially, you are paying for $10 per restaurant (do not forget, there's a free beer too).

Chew on this: Having this bowl of Zenbu-nose ramen would have covered more than 50% of your purchase of the coupon. 
The Italian Restaurant Saizeriya is one of the 12 participating restaurants.
Diners with Liang Court's Wednesdays' Food Trail Coupon can get to try the US Sirlion Steak (U.P. $11.90) with Salad and Free-flow Drink Bar (U.P. $3.90).

The amount of food served with this coupon was astonishing. So generous! There was even a plate of rice!

 The salad which was served almost immediately after I had ordered the food.

The US Sirloin Steak was average. It was the most expensive on Saizeriya's menu. I felt that the steak was a tad too dry and hard. The portion of the serving was big considering the price.

So far I have tried the set meals at two participating outlets. I am impressed by the portions. I would have expected that the servings would likely be 'downsized'. But well, I was wrong. I am glad that the serving was the same as what a normal customer (without coupon) would have been served. Kudos to Liang Court and participating restaurants! The little things that matters.

I must say, this Wednesdays' Food Trail Coupon is value for money. If you had not bought it and are interested in buying this coupon, its not too late. You can still utilise the vouchers on 31st July and 7 August 2013! I am definitely going back to try the other restaurants on 7 Aug!

Jamie's Italian Restaurant in Singapore (Vivocity)


Most food fanatics in Singapore would have probably read or heard that Jamie Oliver has opened a restaurant in Singapore called "Jamie's Italian". The 210 seater restaurant offers both indoors and alfresco dining.
I joined Pinky PigguRubbish Eat Rubbish Grow and Sg Food on Foot for dinner at the restaurant on a weekday. There was a long queue outside the restaurant. Thanks to Pinky Piggu who made the reservation, we did not have to join the queue. As this was Pinky Piggu's and Sg Food on Foot's second visit, they knew which dishes to avoid and which to order.

When ordering, we were surprised that several dishes such as Baked Mushrooms and Wild Mushroom Ravioli were already sold out. Looks like its advisable to come early.
Meat Plank ($15.50 per pax) 
Left with fewer choices, we ordered the Meat Plank ($15.50 per pax) which consisted of cured meat, pickles, cheeses (Buffalo Mozzarella and Pecorino with Chilli Jam) and crunchy salad. The cured meat were arranged in such a way that it was supposed to be consumed from the left to right.

My favourite item on the meat plank was the Pecorino with Chilli Jam. It consisted of a thin piece of sardinian flat bread with pecorino cheese. The chilli jam on top was the 'icing on the cake'! It complemented the cheese perfectly! 

We also ordered several mains to share. The Risotto, Ravioli and Pasta comes in two sizes; small and large. Hence, there are two prices in the menu. For the pasta, the small and large portion weighs 75 and 150g respectively. According to the waitress, the pasta were all freshly made - daily with love. They had a molding machine which could churn out different pasta shapes.
Wild Truffle Risotto $16.50 
I thought that the Wild Truffle Risotto $16 / $24.50 was disappointing. I would have preferred if it was more flavourful and the risotto rice was softer (well, personal preference). Luckily we were sharing the dishes, I can't imagine myself finishing the whole dish by myself without feeling jerlak.
Jools' Favourite Sicilian Tuna Fusilli $14
The Jools' Favourite Sicilian Tuna Fusilli $14 / $21 name after Jamie Oliver's wife was a dish which he created for his wife when she was pregnant. As such this dish was skewed towards a sourish flavour with a tangy kick. In addition, using fusilli pasta (corkscrew shaped) allowed  the pasta to be coated with more of the sauce. I quite like the overall taste of this pasta.
Tagliatelle Bolognese $15
The Tagliatelle Bolognese $15 / $22 with it's meat mix of beef, pork, herbs and cheese was delish.  In addition, the Bolognese sauce was robust and flavourful.

Next up are the two most expensive mains in the restaurant.
Pink Snapper Acqua Pazza $32
The Pink Snapper Acqua Pazza which cost $32 consisted of a whole pink snapper with olives, garlic wine, capers, parsley and baby plum tomatoes. It was surprisingly good! From the appearance alone, judging from the eyes of the fish, a fish fanatic would be able to tell that this fish was extremely fresh!

The Pink Snapper Acqua Pazza was executed perfectly, cooked to precise timing (not a second more, not a second less). The flesh of its meat was incredibly soft and moist. If it was cooked a little longer, the meat would have been overcooked and become hard and stiff. The sauce was equally up to the mark. It was light with fine balance of delicately sweet and salty flavour. A must order!!!
30 Day Mature Prime Rib (with truffle butter and shaved black truffles) $64.50
The 30 Day Mature Prime Rib cost $59.50, we added truffle butter & shaved Tuscan black truffles for $5.00. This main consisted of Angus breed bone-in strip loin served with wild mushrooms and peppery endives.

This was insanely delicious!! They have cooked this to perfection too. Even the sides (wild mushrooms and peppery endives) were downright delish! Another must order!!! The steak was done medium-rare, it was pinkish in the medium throughout the whole piece of steak - cooked evenly. It was just so tender, juicy, moist and well-seasoned! The melted truffle butter, further enhanced the tasty and 'moisturise' the meat. Satisfying and value for money!
Tutti Frutti Lemon Meringue $11.50
For desserts, we ordered the Tutti Frutti Lemon Meringue and Creamy Panna Cotta

I felt that the Tutti Frutti Lemon Meringue $11.50 was average. Nothing particularly outstanding about it.
Creamy Panna Cotta $9
As for the Creamy Panna Cotta $9, it would be a dish which I would recommend. Both Pinky Piggu and Sg Food on Foot felt that the one which they had during their previous visit was better. This being my first visit and I thought that the Creamy Panna Cotta was outstanding!

The Creamy Panna Cotta was smooth, soft and wobbly. I really like the rasberry fruit compote which coated the outer layer of the Panna Cotta. In addition, after each bite of the Panna Cotta, the creamy and sweet after-taste which set in had me longing for more of this! The more I indulge in it, the more I love it! A must order!!

What a wonderful way to end the meal!
Overall, there were hits and misses. The two pastas we tried were decent, but the two most expensive mains; Pink Snapper Acqua Pazza and 30 Day Mature Prime Rib stole the show! It was worth the price ordering these two mains. Another item which I would order again is the Creamy Panna Cotta!

Service-wise, it was excellent! The waiters and waitresses frequently stop by to gather feedback from customers with regards to the food. In addition, they changed our plates frequently and on one occasion even our utensils. I can't help but wonder if it was because they knew that this was a group of 'bloggers'.

I can't wait to come back again to Jamie's Italian Restaurant! It is advisable to make reservations before coming. I have been eyeing Wild Mushroom Ravioli. If you have tried it before, do let me know if its good.

Do note that the menu in Jamie's Italian Restaurant will change twice a year with up to 20 dishes dishes being replaced.

Lunch On Board Emirates Airlines From Dubai to Singapore

We travelled back to Singapore (Changi Airport) from Dubai (Dubai International Airport) on board Emirates Airlines via Boeing 777 (again..). 
Lunch Menu
We had lunch served on board the plane. The Lunch menu provides passengers with a choice of Mutton with Black Pepper Sauce or Chilli and Lime Chicken with Garlic Sauce.

After that fantastic Mutton Stew with Black Pepper on board Airbus A380, I knew what to choose when I saw the Menu! It had to be the Mutton with Black Pepper Sauce. Although the names were slightly different, it was essentially the same thing!

The Mutton with Black Pepper Sauce was served with Sweet Chilli Prawn and Coconut Rice Pudding.

The Sweet Chilli Prawn consisted of marinated sweet chilli baby prawns on glass noodle salad. The dish was unique and reminded me of Thai cuisine. To be frank it was just so-so as the prawns were small and the glass noodle was too hard.

Whereas the Coconut Rice Pudding which consisted of coconut flakes with tropical fruits fared better. The freshness of the coconut and fruits played a huge part. In addition, the rice pudding was executed nicely, moist and soft. It was a well executed dessert that help ended the meal off on a perfect note. 
Mutton with Black Pepper Sauce
Coming back to the Main; the star for the lunch. The Mutton with Black Pepper Sauce looks exactly the same as what I on the Airbus when I was on the way to Paris. It was great to be able to have this for my return trip as well! Taste wise, it was the same, except that this time the sauce was slightly more starchy. 
"As You Like It" Menu
This was the only flight that offered "As You Like It" Menu. During the previous flights on board Emirates, there was no such services. "As You Like It" allows passengers to request for cup noodles, chicken sandwich, spinach tortilla, fresh seasonal fruit and assorted chocolate bars anytime during the flight. Come to think of it, I should have at least ordered and try their tortilla or sandwich.

Since this is the last of my Emirates' experience for this trip, I would like to share that one unique / special perks of travelling via Emirates which most other airlines do not offer is that they have one of the world's most generous baggage policies! The baggage limit for Economy Class passenger is 30kg per person. Yes, you can check in up 30kg of baggage! Moreover, in terms of their other service standards, they did not disappoint!

Al Farooj at Deira City Centre (UAE, Dubai)

We went back to Deira City Centre again for lunch as we could not find any other eateries nearby for lunch. 
Al Farooj is an international fast casual restaurant chain started by an Arabic family in 1994. The chain specialises in serving Shawarma using their own secret bend herbs and spices prepared in Arabic, Mexican, Italian and Lebanese recipes. Today, it has 40 outlets in United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Kuwait, Libya and France.

I ordered Arabian Shawarma 19 AED (S$6.51) while the partner ordered Shawarma Wrap 16 AED (S$5.48). We waited 20 minutes at the counter for our food. So much for being a fast casual restaurant especially since there was no crowd.

We both ordered Shawarma as Al Farooj was famous for it. The Shawema is a fast food commonly consisted of a pita bread sandwich with meat and various toppings in it.

Personally, I felt that there were too much mayonnaise in the Shawarma Wrap. So much so that it masked the flavour of the spices and meat. In addition, the pita bread was too chewy.

The Arabian Shawarma fared better. This time there were less mayonnaise. The fragrance and tenderness of the chicken left an impression; well seasoned and grilled chicken meat! The wrap was crispier too. Oddly, the lettuce were replaced with fries coated with mayonnaise which made it soggy. There were fries given as sides.

Many have said that this was an authentic place for Shawarma. But I am not too sure how true this is since they have fries. This is because I associate fries with western culture/cuisine. In addition, having fries in a Shawarma made me doubt the authenticity. Just my 2 cents.

Having said that, anyone knows where Sultan Kebab (Peace Centre) has shifted to?

Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun 品味港式猪肠粉 (Pek Kio Food Centre)

I made two trips down to Pek Kio Market and Food Centre on a Saturday and Saturday for breakfast as I have been wanting to try the popular Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle 華記大蝦麵.

But however, the stall was closed on both days! Never mind, there are other food worth eating in this food centre too!

As I was walking around searching for another stall to patronise, I spotted this unique stall called Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun 品味港式猪肠粉. This stall is located directly opposite Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle.

What caught my attention was neither the queue nor was it the menu which offered Scallop ($4) and Abalone ($16.80) Chee Chong Fun. It was instead the fact that each piece of Chee Chong Fun was freshly made upon order, the traditional way (using a cloth)! Not factory made! 
The reason why there was a queue was because at anyone time, only two Chee Chong Fun (Steamed Rice Noodle Rolls) could be made. Standing there, observing the way the Chee Chong Fun was made, I must say that it was an enriching experience seeing the whole process of it and watching their nimble hands at work. The owner, the man in white shirt was friendly and approachable.

I ordered the Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun which cost $2.50.

The owner does not stinge on the ingredients. For $2.50, I got a plate of Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun which was double the portion of what is served elsewhere with another layer of Chee Cheong Fun stacked on top. In addition, there were lots of Char Siew fillings.

The Chee Cheong Fun was served in a delectable well-balanced sauce that comprised of light soy sauce and sesame oil. Personally, I preferred this type of sauce compared to version with dark soy sauce. Fragrant sesame seeds were sprinkled on top to enhance the taste. This Chee Cheong Fun; steamed rice roll was soft, thin and smooth, it was also able to hold the fillings without breaking.  
Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun is certainly worth a try as it is of similar standard (or even better) to those served at restaurants and cheaper too! I can imagine myself having this for breakfast every weekend if I am staying at the block of flats next to it!

Life is interesting isn't? If Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle was not closed, I would not have discovered this Chee Cheong Fun Stall! Literally - "When one door closes, another opens."

ps: I noticed that more people ordered the Prawn Chee Chong Fun which cost $4.

Cafe Italia Express at Dubai Mall (UAE, Dubai)

A visit to Dubai is not complete without a trip to the famous Dubai Mall which is the largest shopping mall in the world! Located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, it has a total internal floor area of 5.9 million square feet (50 football fields) with over 1200 shops of which 120 are restaurants and cafes, 95 elevators and 150 escalators! There's even Laduree and Galeries Lafayette. In addition, there's a five star hotel, Olympic-size Ice Rink, Oasis Fountain Waterfall, WaterFront Atrium, 22-screen Cinema, SEGA Republic (indoor theme park), Dubai Aquarium and Under Water Zoo in the mall! The locals have said that if you really want to explore and shop here, you would required 3 days to explore the mall.

We got lost several times in the mall as it was huge and were so tired that we had to sit down to rest. The mall had many Concierge counters to help direct tourist and locals. 

Ok, back to the food. The prices at Dubai Mall seemed to be steeper compared to Deira City Centre mall. If only we had changed more Dirhams. We walked around and in the end settled our dinner in a food court as we all wanted to try different cuisines. The food court was huge with many different cuisines. There were fast food (e.g. Mc Donald's, Burger King, KFC), a restaurant and even a kids playground in the food court! 
I walked one round around the food court before deciding to settle for Italian food at Cafe Italia Express. Cafe Italia Express was the first to introduce traditional Neapolitan pizza in the gulf region. It first started making its presence felt in Bahrain in 2000. As the name suggests, Cafe Italia Express specialises in Italian cuisines such as pizza and pasta. The pizzas are baked in ovens that are fueled by wood. 

I ordered the Pizza Barbecue Combo 35 AED (S$11.97). After ordering, the chef went about his task of preparing a pizza.

As the pizza had to be prepared and baked, issued a buzz that would activate (shake) to inform customers that their orders were ready. First time seeing a razor shaped buzzer. The more common ones I had seen in Singapore were round shaped like a land mine.

The Pizza Barbecue Combo 35 AED (S$11.97) consisted of a 10 Inch BBQ Chicken Pizza, choice of Soup or Salad and a Soft Drink.

For soup, I chose Minestrone. Although there were lots of small chunks of vegetables in it, the soup was a tad too sour for me.

The BBQ Chicken Pizza was just average. Thin crisp crust with chicken, onion, BBQ sauce, cilantro and mozzarella. At 35 AED, this was relatively cheap. 
Dubai Fountain
A must do when visiting the Dubai Mall is to watch the Dubai Fountain performance. It is the world largest dancing fountain. The fountain is 275 metres long and can shoot water jets up as high as 150 metres (50 storey high). With Burj Khalifal at its background, the performance was captivating! You can watch the show at half hour intervals from 6pm to 11pm from Sun to Wed and 6pm to 1130pm from Thu to Sat. The fountain is located just outside the Dubai Mall on Lower Ground Waterfront Promenade.
