Wild Olives (Changi Airport T2 Staff Canteen)

I did not know of this till recently when my friend brought me to this place. How many of us know that there is a staff canteen hidden in Changi Aiport Terminal 2? Kee Chiu (Raise hands)

The staff canteen at T2 is huge! Lots of tables and chairs it is like a food court and there are many stalls, more than 10! You are spoilt for variety. In fact, the place looks better than a food court, it was bright, colourful, clean and spacious! 
After a quick walk around, decided to try the western food; Wild Olives. Wild Olives specialises in Western and Italian Cuisine. It does not use Pork and Lard in it's dishes. It's pasta starts at $3.30 (public price)!

I ordered Linguine Alla Vongole. Staff price is $3.80 while public is $4.20. Wow, it is cheap for pasta compared to other hawker centres or food courts. Where else can you find such cheap pasta! In addition, you can add a small Soup / Garden Salad for $1.00 each.
Homemade Mushroom Soup $1.00
Well, I paid just $1 for this bowl of 'small soup' to complete my meal. It's definitely not small! This is their Homemade Mushroom Soup. I added pepper, hence you will notice that there are small black bits on the top of the soup. A big bowl of mushroom soup, the mushroom flavour was mild but addictive. In the end, I finish the whole bowl and found myself longing for more. But still I prefer if the mushroom flavour was stronger and there are chunks of mushrooms in it. 
Linguine Alla Vongole $4.20
Linguine Alla Vongole; linguine(pasta) with clams in white wine sauce. I am impressed by their generous portion of food. Look at the number of clams and amount of linguine given. This cost only $4.20! The clams were fresh and perfectly cooked. The pasta was a tad too dry, that was easily solved by mixing it with the sauce below. The sauce was disappointing as it was not fragrant enough although there were small pieces of garlic in the sauce. This dish would have been much better with more white wine sauce.

I wish that I live at the east side of Singapore. I did not know about this place till now. Well it is better late than never. Overall, I thought that the food (the two items I have tried) could have been better. But let's not forget that it is very cheap! I will not call it cheap and good food, but more of cheap and decent/average food. Hopefully, I will have more chance to explore the T2 Staff Canteen. If you know what's nice here, let me know.

The Prata Place (Upper Thomson Road)

As its name suggest, The Prata Place specialises in serving Prata and Indian Cuisine such as Thosai and Murtabak. It is located along Upper Thomson Road and is Halal certified. The Prata Place is actually quite well known and is frequently packed especially at night.
Visited The Prata Place on a Saturday morning. Quite empty compared to the other time I came at night it was full house. Looks like it is better to come here in the morning!

Plain (Kosong) Prata $0.90

The Plain (Kosong) Prata was absolutely delicious! It arrived pipping hot. The Prata was crispy on the outside (including the edges) and fluffy on the inside. Moreover, it was not oily, they certainly managed the heat well. Dipping it into the curry will make the Prata taste even more heavenly. Although the price is a little steep compared to else where, its worth the money.

The Mushroom with Egg Prata was elongated rectangular in shape. It was simply a Egg Prata with stuffed with slices of button mushrooms. Personally, I prefer ordering the egg prata as the taste of the button mushroom did not mix well with the prata. Well its a matter of personal opinion.

Lots of variety of food at The Prata Place. Even looking at the menu for Prata itself, there are even Red Bean Prata, Floss Prata and Onion Chilli Prata available. This place is likely to be filled to the beam at night. Ironically, this place is air-conditioned..which is something that bothered me. Because your hair, shirt, basically your whole body will end up smelling of curry and prata. But the food (prata) is too good to resist!

Blanco Court Prawn Noodle (Beach Road)

I have always wonder where is the best prawn noodle in Singapore. Many people have told me that it is at Adam’s road. Well, I tried it a long time ago and was not convinced that it was the best. 2 years ago,I heard about a prawn mee stall in kitchener road that has garnered lots of reviews, but have not tried it. Last year, I happened to chance upon this prawn mee stall along beach road called Blanco Court Prawn Noodle. Wow, its the best I have eaten so far. I made a trip twice recently to savour their prawn noodles (along with pictures) to show to readers.

If you are a regular, you would have noticed that price has increased by $0.50. In addition, they now a new dish; Jumbo Prawn Noodle! I did not order this during my two visits. Hopefully I will be able to try this on my next visit and blog about it!
Despite there being a perpetual queue at Blanco Court Prawn Noodle, the waiting time at the queue and arrival of food is not long. They are very efficient! Look at the above picture. Each person has a task, it is like supply chain management. One does a part of the dish and then pass it down to the next person (left to right).
Prawn & Pork Ribs Noodle $5.50 (soup) 
The Prawn & Pork Ribs Noodle (soup) was topped with fragrant fried shallots. There are 3 pieces of prawns (half) and around 4 to 5 pieces of pork ribs. The prawns were fresh; firm meat that can be easily de-shelled. The beansprouts hidden underneath the noodle was not overcooked and go well with the noodles. Nothing to shout about the pork ribs except that they were tender. 

In a bowl of prawn noodle, the most important feature other than the prawn being fresh will be the soup. In this case, the soup was heavenly! Dark brown broth, rich and tasty flavour with umami taste from the prawns. Moreover, the soup is not oily. I found myself drinking spoonful after spoonful of this prawn soup. Totally souplicious! Certainty one of the best Prawn Noodle I have eaten.

If the soup is insufficient for you, feel free to bring your bowl to the counter and ask for more soup! I am guessing, this soup must have been prepared long before the stall opens with a combination of prawn heads, prawn meat, pork ribs and possibly lard. Any one has any idea?

I am never a fan of dry prawn noodle, believe the best prawn noodle has to be 'eaten in the soup'. Nevertheless, I decided to try the Prawn & Pork Ribs Noodle (dry with chilli). The prawn noodles was topped with shallots. There is chilli powder at the side should you require it. Comparing the two dishes, I still prefer my Prawn Noodle to be served in soup! Reasons being I felt that the chilli masked the taste (sweetness) of the prawns and also the soup. Well, its a matter of personal opinion.

Blanco Court Prawn Noodle is a shop house with 3 stalls in it, the prawn mee stall, drink stall and Nor Hiang stall. Majority of the people order the prawn noodles. This shop house can cater to quite a large number of people, despite it being packed during lunch time. The good news is that the turnover rate is very fast. Most people eat and go. The queue for the prawn mee and the wait for the prawn mee is quite fast too. They are quite efficient! Although there is no air-con, the place is well ventilated. Moreover, it is cleaner that hawker centres. 

This is the best prawn noodle I have eaten so far. Anyone else has any recommendations on where the best prawn noodle stall in Singapore is?

Minced Meat Noodle (Sim Lim Square Food Court)

Most people visit Sim Lim Square to shop for electronic goods and do not pay much attention to the food court located at the basement. I have heard that there is a famous Minced Meat Noodle (Bak Chor Mee) store located at the food court. Hence, decided make a trip down to this place during lunch on a weekday.
There was a short queue during lunch time; around 15 minutes wait.

I have no idea why I had a sudden craving for Abalone Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle. I ordered Mee Pok (chinese yellow noodle - flat) dry with chilli. As you collect your order, you can actually help yourself to the free flow of pork lard. First time I have seen such a practice. It is place along with the sauces and chilli.

Look at the portions of ingredients (mushrooms, fishball, meatball, minced meat, bean sprouts, fish cake, dumpling, lettuce, scallion) given in the Abalone Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle. The portions given are so generous, which is a rarity in food court today. Of course, only1 piece of abalone was given. A piece of dried crispy fish was added inside. The noodle was well cooked and the sauce at the bottom of the bowl contained a mixture of chilli, black vinegar and soya sauce. When tossed properly, the sauce complement the noodles nicely.

However, Hill Street Tai Hwa's version is certainly better. (Hill Street Tai Hwa's sauce was more aromatic) Still this is a very decent bowl of Minced Meat Noodle compared to those at other food courts if you are unable to visit Hill Street Tai Hwa.

Salted Caramel (Upper Thomson Road)

Salted Caramel is situated along the row of shop houses where The Roti Prata House is. Salted Caramel specialising in producing ice cream using natural ingredients with no preservative or artificial sweeteners. Competition is quite keen now with so many other ice cream parlours such as Island Creamery, ICE CUBE, Sugalight Factory, Scoopz, Seventh Heaven Tom's Palette and Udders.

Ironically, the Salted Caramel ice cream was so-so. My favourite is Earl Grey ice cream, intense fragrant of earl grey. It was not over sweet and was creamy yet refreshing. If you are a Earl Grey tea lover, this is strongly recommended. The Cookies and Cream ice cream was quite good too with generous chunks of cookies in it. 

The Horlicks Tim Tam had chunks of Tim Tam in it. One the first mouthful, the flavours of Horlicks and Tim Tam complemented each other quite well. However, after a few more mouthfuls, I felt that it was way too sweet.

During my visit, I noticed that the traffic flow is quite high. There was almost a constant flow of customers entering the shop. If you were to ask my honest opinion, well it is just another ice cream parlour. I will only come back here for it's Earl Grey ice cream if I happen to pass by.

Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh 梁记(巴生)肉骨茶 (Beach Road)

Leong Kee (Klang) Bak Kut Teh is located along Beach Road. Whenever I walk pass the place, the place is always bursting with customers. I decided to try it for myself on a weekday lunch.

I ordered the Bak Kut Teh (Ribs) with a bowl of Rice. As the place was very crowded, I waited for more than 20 minutes before my order was served.

This bowl of Bak Kut Teh soup is very different from the peppery version. The Bak Kut Teh soup was  thick, cloudy with a bitterish herbal taste. Personally, I prefer the peppery version with hints of garlic fragrance. Inside, there are vegetables, pork ribs and bean curd skin. The pork ribs were very tender and soft.  However, I felt that the pork ribs were not meaty enough.

I doubt that I am coming back any time soon. I still prefer my Bak Kut Teh soup to be the peppery type. Maybe this (Klang style) will suit your taste bud, but it certainty did not suit me. There's another Bak Kut Teh outlet located nearby, just across the road. I hope to give it a try one day.

Western Food (NUS Business Canteen, The Terrace)

This Western Food stall located at NUS Business Canteen aka The Terrance is considered the best western food in the campus. In short, it is cheap and good. You can hardly find western food at this price else where.
When I was studying in NUS Business School, I frequently this stall almost daily as there was nothing else that I fancy at the Business School Canteen. The other stall that was good was the Malay Stall located at the corner.

It has been three and a half years since I graduated. As I happened to be in NUS, I decided to come back to NUS Business Canteen and eat the Western Food again! Noticed that several stalls have changed hands. Glad to known that the western stall is still run by the same uncle. I was pleasantly surprised that he still remembers me!
 As usual, this is the stall with the longest queue.

My advise is for you to decide what you want to order before joining the queue. Reason? Well.. the man behind this stall takes orders all the way to the end of the queue at times. His memory is real good! I still remember how on several occasion, he would frown when someone hesitates or is undecided on what to order. Customers who patron this stall will surely remember his 'Next Pls, Next Pls, Next Pls.'
Grilled Chicken Chop with Pasta, added Potato Wedges $4.00
I ordered the Grilled Chicken Chop with Pasta and added Potato Wedges. Regulars would notice that I switched the pasta to Fusili Pasta. The Fusili Pasta comes with tomato sauce. I like the brown gravy that is on top of the chicken chop. It taste very similar to the gravy that is used in KFC's whipped potato. The chicken chop and potato wedges are simple yet it taste great. 

This stall is run by just 2 person. The man and a woman (I am not sure if that is his wife). The woman just does the cooking while the man takes the order and collect the orders. When you look at the way they run the operation, you will be amazed how they clear the queue so fast. It is just like Just-In-Time, if you know supply chain you will know what I mean. I wish I have many more chance to come back here! When I was still studying here, I also frequently order the Cheezy Egg Sandwich $1.90, Cheezy Farmer's Omelette $2.00, Deep Fried Chicken Cutlet & Pasta $3.00, Herbs & Honey Roasted Chicken Leg with Pasta $3.40 and Fish and Chips $2.60.

I still remember that I was told that the man behind this stall was actually a lawyer. He stopped his practise in law and started this western stall as he had a passion for cooking. If this is true, this will explain his good command of English, wittiness, memory and pride.

Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood 万隆华和海鲜菜馆 (Casuarina Road)

We (a group of six) wanted to visit Melben Seafood at Ang Mo Kio for dinner on a Saturday. Knowing that Uncle Leong Seafood has moved out and anticipating a long queue, we decided to set off early. We reached Melben at 545pm, yet there was a long queue and it will be at least a 2 hour wait! We decided to try go else where to satisfy our craving for crabs as we did not want to wait for 2 hours.
We decided to visit Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood a Zi Char restaurant located at Casuarina Road along Upper Thomson Road. Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood has been around for close to two decades, specialises in serving local cuisine. As it was our first visit, we had no idea on what to order. Well, the best way is to walk around look at the dishes on the surround tables and also asking the staff for recommendation.

The chilli at the right has the right amount of spiciness. Although I like the chilli, I seldom dip my food into it as I prefer to savour the food in its original taste.

Now for the food! Presented in the same order it was served!
Prawn Paste Chicken Wings $12
 Twelve pieces of Prawn Paste Chicken Wings also known as Har Cheong Gai. Two for each of us. This was the first dish that arrived and it arrived pipping hot! Seasoned and coated with prawn paste, the chicken wings deep fried. The batter outside was crispy and inside, the meat was tender and moist!
Hot Plate Beancurd $10
The Hot Plate Beancurd totally different from the others I have tried before, was highly delectable. It came with prawns, beancurd and egg, topped with a slightly spicy sauce.
Stirred Fried Spinach $10
We ordered the Stirred Fried Spinach. The leaves and stems were well cooked. Leaves were not too soft and stems were not too hard. In addition, in terms of taste, it was not over salty. Taste just like a home-cook dish.
Birthday Noodles (Mee Sua ) $12
Birthday Noodles (Mee Sua), was a plate of Mee Sua fried with prawns, squids, eggs, bean sprouts, fish slices and quail eggs (interesting). Another unique dish that reminds me of Sembawang White Bee Hoon.
Man Tou / Buns $3.60
The fried Man Tou / Buns are big! Bigger than elsewhere. In fact, I felt that they were too big. Despite the size, it was good! Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Moreover, it was not oily. Sadly, the Chilli Crab gravy was not up to par (more on the gravy in the text below).
Chilli Crab 
The Chilli Crab is something that Singaporeans are familiar with. The chilli crab gravy was way below par. It was too sweet, too starchy and not spicy. Too much Ketchup was added and the egg used was too little. Luckily, the crab was huge, fresh and succulent! It was an easy task pulling out the chunks of crab meat from the shells! This is a big plus.
Black Pepper Crab
The Black Pepper Crab was huge too. Crab wise, it was similar as above! Black pepper sauce wise, it fared much better. Peppery and not overly salty, it was finger linking good! Had a delectable time savouring the black pepper sauce on the shells.

We ordered the La La Clams. However, the staff missed out that order. The staff was quite nice, apologising and telling us they will cooked it for us immediately. As we were already full, we decided to cancel the order.

I have seen many reviews stating the bad service this place has. Well, I beg to differ. The service here was good. The only glitch was that one of our order was missed out, they apologised and offer to cook it immediately. Understandable as the place was packed! Moreover, the food was good and it was certainly value for money. The total bill amount to $148.41 inclusive of the rice, drinks and towels. For 6 person...this is cheap! I am certain that I will come back here again. This time I will want to try the Butter Crab and also La La Clams !
