Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice 联合本记砂煲饭 (Chinatown)

Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice 联合本记砂煲饭 located at a corner of Chinatown Complex Food Centre has been in operation for a long time specialising in Claypot rice.
Further testimonial to the famous claypot rice.
Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice specialises in Sausage Claypot Rice, Chicken Claypot Rice or a combination of both; Mixed Claypot Rice ranging from $5 to $20. Besides claypot rice, soup such as Watercress Pork Rib Soup, Chicken Leg Peanut Soup and Black Chicken Herbal Soup are sold.
After ordering the wait game begins. If there is no queue, the minimum waiting time is 25 minutes as the rice is only cooked upon order. The claypot rice is first steamed over a gas stove at the initial cooking stage to speed up the cooking process. After that the claypot rice is transferred over to a charcoal stove. During peak hours, the waiting time can stretch to 1 hour. Regulars would normally call in advance and order so that they need not wait too long.
Mixed Claypot Rice $5
I waited for my claypot rice for slightly more than an hour on a Friday evening. Customers can adjust the amount of black sauce according to their preference. The Mixed Claypot Rice $5 was served with chicken, sausages, salted fish vegetables and rice.

I felt that the claypot rice did not really manage to absorb the flavours from the other ingredients such as the salted fish, sausages or chicken. What I like was the fact that the chicken meat were so tender and flavourful. Overall, it was good, but not fantastic. Its not worth the wait of more than 1 hour for this.

Nissin Tonkotsu Flavour Instant Noodles

This packet of Nissin Tonkotsu Flavour Instant Noodles was bought from Taiwan. Whenever we travel overseas we would always buy back lots of food back to Singapore. Among the food we bought, there would always be instant noodles or cup noodles.

I ate this last year (2013) in September and have been wanting to document this down. At last, I found some time to do this.
Noodles, Soup base (powder), Seasoning sauce
It came with a packet of seasoning sauce (oil packet) and soup base (powder).
Soup base (powder)
The soup base powder.

How I normally cook my instant noodles:
Step 1: Boil water, when water is starting to boil, add in noodles.
Step 2: After has been boiling for 15 seconds. Transfer the noodles to another pot of water with warm/hot water.
Step 3: Boil water. Add seasoning sauce followed by soup base (to taste) and cook the noodles.
Step 4: Add an egg (optional).
Step 5: Serve.
Step 6: Add shallots and/or a piece of cheese (to enhance the taste and for a creamier taste).

The Nissin Tonkotsu Flavour Instant Noodles was pretty good. The tonkotsu flavoured soup was tasty. Interestingly, there were sesame seeds in the soup base (powder). As with all instant noodles, this was simple and quick to prepare. Wish that such flavours are available in Singapore.

Leong Yeow Famous Waterloo St Hainanese Chicken Rice 亮耀馳名四馬路海南鶏飯 (Bras Basah)

Leong Yeow Famous Waterloo St Hainanese Chicken Rice 亮耀馳名四馬路海南鶏飯 is a famous chicken rice stall tucked away at a corner of Waterloo centre in a coffee shop. The nearest MRT station is Bras Basah (Circle Line).

During meal times, this stall nearly always garner the longest queue in the coffee shop.
Steamed and Roasted Chicken Rice $5.70
As I could not decided whether to order steamed or roasted chicken, I decided to order both. Hence, my chicken rice cost $5.70.

The chicken rice was fragrant and not too oily. However, some parts of the rice were a little too dry.
Steam and Roasted Chicken
Once the chicken meat are cut onto the plate, they are drizzled with soy sauce and I suspect sesame oil was added too.
Steam and Roasted Chicken
The Steamed Chicken with its succulent meat was decently executed. As for the Roasted Chicken, I thought it was even better executed. The exterior of the Roasted Chicken was yummilicious. Slightly crisp yet chewy skin, it was immense with aromatic blend of seasoning and flavour. Very addictive. The fragrant and flavour  penetrated into the meat. If certain part of the meat was less tough, this would have been perfect!

As with every chicken rice, the chilli sauce is a must! The chilli sauce at Leong Yeow was addictive. Very tangy and spicy. It complemented well with the chicken meat. Not for the fainted hearted, especially if you are one who can't take spicy food.

Yan Kee Noodle House at BK Eating House

I have heard about a noodle stall in a coffeeshop at Circular road which specialises in Dry Mee Sua. This is unique to me as Fishball Noodles and Bak Chor Mee (mee pok or mee kia) nearly always take the limelight in any noodle stall, not mee sua.
The stall is called Yan Kee Noodle House at BK Eating House located at the junction of South Bridge Road and Circular Road. Another factor which makes it so unique is that the stall is open 24 hours and is only closed on Sundays.
When I visited on a weekday noon, the eating house was surprisingly empty. There were only a handful customers. There was also no queue at Yan Kee Noodle House.
Needless to say, I ordered their Speciality Dry Mee Sua, made payment and waited for the food to be served to my table.
Speciality Dry Mee Sua $3.50
The Speciality Dry Mee Sua cost $3.50.
Speciality Dry Mee Sua $3.50
Speciality Dry Mee Sua $3.50
The Speciality Dry Mee Sua was served with fishballs, meatballs, minced meat, lean meat, a whole mushroom, ikan bilis and pork lard. What stood out was that the mee sua which was amazingly springy, not soggy. In addition, each strand of mee sua when well mixed was well coated with the chilli and vingear sauce which is bounded to entice your taste buds. The two handmade fishballs, bigger than what you get else where also deserved a mention. They were bouncy and firm with no fishy taste. The smaller things to note which made this such a wonderful dish was the crunchy ikan bilis and pork lard which gave an additional dimension to the texture and oomph of the dish.

For just $3.50, they were so generous with the ingredients. Value for money and yummy!

Bornga Korean BBQ Restaurant 본가 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

Bornga is a leading Korean Barbecue (BBQ) restaurant chain with outlets in Korea, USA, Malaysia and Singapore. The restaurant chain is started by Korean Celebrity Chef Jong Won Paik.
We visited this restaurant on a weekday. I have not tried Bornga in Singapore. But since we were in City Square (Johor Bahru), we decided to give this a try!
The interior of the restaurant. Above each table, there was an extendable exhaust pipe mounted on the ceiling that could be pulled down to the table if BBQ meat was ordered.
The dining table, before it was cluttered with a whole lot of Ban Chan .
A few minutes after ordering, one of the staff placed hot charcoal into the BBQ stove and pulled the exhaust pipe down. As as you may have guessed, we ordered BBQ meat! We could feel the intense heat from the hot charcoal.
Ban Chan / Side Dish (반찬)
A selection of the Ban Chan / Side Dish (반찬). More were added subsequently! And they were refillable too! There was also a tray full of fresh and crunchy assorted raw vegetables which will be used for wrapping the BBQ meat.
Woo Samgyup RM38
The first dish was Bornga's signature Woo Samgyup RM38 which consisted of beautifully marbled thinly sliced beef brisket in Bornga's special sauce and golden pumpkin.
Woo Samgyup RM38
At Bornga, you do not need to do the cooking. The staff would do all the cooking for you. All you have to do is to eat! The staff first pulled the exhaust pipe down and cook the meat in front of us. He first spread the Woo Samgyup on the stove and let it cook. As it was thinly sliced, the meat was cooked very quickly. We were glad that the staff cooked the meat for us as we did not want to overcook the meat.
Woo Samgyup RM38
Once the Woo Samgyup are cooked. You can dip the beef into the special house sauce provided and roll up the meat with rice and various vegetables. The Woo Samgyup was delicious. The essence, flavour and juice of the meat was still retained, making it a rewarding gourmet experience whether you had it alone or wrapped in vegetables.
Mansinchang Samgyupsal RM28
The second dish was the Mansinchang Samgyupsal RM28; tenderised pork belly seasoned with parsley flakes, salt and pepper.
Mansinchang Samgyupsal RM28
Mansinchang Samgyupsal RM28
Again, the staff cooked the meat for us over the charcoal stove. All we had to do was to watch! =)
Mansinchang Samgyupsal RM28
Once the Mansinchang Samgyupsal was cooked, the staff would put them into a plate for us. The procedure is the same again. You can either eat the meat on its own or dip it in sauce and wrap it with vegetables. Personally, I thought that this was just an average dish.
Chadol Duenjang Jjigae RM24
We also ordered a Chadol Duenjang Jjigae RM24, a traditional Korean soybean paste stew with beef and vegetable. Personally, the picture of this on the menu did not entice me. But as the partner was quite keen to have this, we ordered it.

The soybean paste stew was cooked in front of us at our table and boiled till the it was reduced.
Chadol Duenjang Jjigae RM24 - vegetable bowl
One the meat was cooked, the Duenjang Jjigae was mixed into a vegetable bowl, and mixed with rice and vegetable (like how you would do it with bibimbap).
Chadol Duenjang Jjigae RM24
The end result! Tada! The Chadol Duenjang Jjigae was superb! Each grain of rice was well coated with the intense fragrant and flavour from the stewed soybean paste. Each mouthful was just so incredibly flavorful and brilliantly in terms of texture (soft or crunchy depending on what you ate). Fantastic! The more you dig into this bowl of rice, the more you will love it. This was our favourite dish in this meal! A Must Try!

Do note, there’s a minimum order of two meats for BBQ.

It was certainly a good decision to visit Bornga at City Square! The food and the service was good. And for such a price, it was certainly value for money!
