Broadway Claypot Rice 百乐匯砂煲饭 (Ang Mo Kio)

Broadway Claypot Rice 百乐匯砂煲饭  has more than 30 years of history and as it's name suggest, it specialises in dishing out claypot rice. It is located at Coffee City, the same coffee shop as the Xu Yan Tonic Soup that sells great herbal soup.
Coffee City
Broadway Claypot Rice 百乐匯砂煲饭
If you are observant, you will notice that although the sign says 'Claypot Rice', most of the items on the signboard are pig organ soup and bak kut teh.

As mentioned earlier, Broadway Claypot Rice over the years has built up its name by serving claypot chicken rice. But not just any normal claypot chicken rice. Customers have the choice of asking for the 'normal chicken' or 'kampong chicken'. And of course the kampong chicken claypot rice will cost more.
The prices of the 'normal chicken' and 'kampong chicken' claypot rice are at the bottom of this picture. As there was two of us, we ordered the Claypot Chicken Rice (normal chicken) for 2 person at $13. There has been an increase of price by $1 after this coffee shop was renovated. Takes about 20 minutes for it to be served after ordering.
Claypot Chicken Rice (normal chicken) $13.00
Do be careful not to touch the claypot as it is sizzling hot and steaming. Look at the smoke 'emitting' out.
Looks quite big and wide, but the claypot bowl is very shallow.
Here's how it looks like after stirring and mixing all the rice and ingredients. I have eaten the claypot rice at this stall before. This time I can't help but comment that it looks different. Way too much dark sauce was added.. and I was right. It was quite salty... and I was disappointed. Standard has dropped. This time the amount of dark sauce has masked the fragrant of the other ingredients except for the salted fish. Other ingredients include chinese sausage and spring onions.

The good news is that there are lots of charred rice at the bottom of the claypot (to the disapproval of the partner). Crispy and crunchy.

Wonder if standard has really dropped or if it was a one off incident.

Peperoni Pizzeria (Hillcrest)

Peperoni Pizzeria is owned by the Les Amis Group. Peperoni Pizzeria specialises in serving Italian cuisine such as pizzas and pasta. They are well known for their family size pizza. Today, there are three outlets in Hillcrest, Binjai Park and Frankel Avenue.

This is my 2nd visit to Peperoni Pizzeria, I visited it's outlet at Hillcrest (Greenwood Avenue) again. It is quite ulu, located a long distance away from the nearest bus stop. The best mode of transport to this place will be by car. However, parking can be a problem during peak hours.
Wood-fired Oven
The pizzas are cooked using traditional wood-fired oven.
Noticed anything abnormal?

There's crayons on the table! And instead of having table clothes, paper is used. This way, customers can draw on the paper while waiting for their food to be served.
Noticed some of the drawings being pasted on the wall?
There's no service charge in Peperoni Pizzeria.
Noticed another abnormality here? (hint look at the cost of ice water and extra ice!)

Well, the ice water and extra ice are actually Free Of Charge (FOC). They are just trying to make a dig about places that charge money for plain water.
Pizza Menu
Pizza Menu
Ordered a Large (12 inch) Pizza. The pizza is made on the spot upon order and take about 15 minutes to be served.
Large Pizza (Prosciutto Crudo di Parma & Funghi) $23
Looks appetising? The pizza crust is thin and crispy. This is the second time I ordered the Prosciutto Crudo di Parma which consist of parma ham and rocket salad. The rocket salad complemented the parma ham well and enhanced the flavour of the pizza. Wish that more rocket salad was added. The Funghi pizza consist of mixed mushrooms (button, shitake and porcini). I am a mushroom person, hence found this delicious. But if I was to make a choice, the Prosciutto Crudo di Parma is a must order!
Pasta Menu
Pasta Menu
Besides ordering a pizza? we ordered a pasta too. We ordered Squid Ink pasta as we heard (online) that it was their signature dish. The Squid Ink pasta took around 20 minutes to be served.
Squid Ink Pasta (Spaghetti) $22
The Squid Ink Pasta was well coated in squid ink ensuring a consistent black colour and it was not dry. Moreover, the squid ink was fresh and there was no fishy taste. The squid was well cooked. The Squid Ink Pasta was so delicious that I wish that more serving was given. Certainly a must order!

Overall, Peperoni Pizzeria is the place to come for pizzas and squid ink pasta. Moreover, the prices on it's menu are NETT. Which means there are no extra charges. Despite not having any service charge, the staff  are attentive and observant. I am certain that there will be a third visit for me! If this place was more conveniently located, I would have been a regular here!

Sugalight Factory (Joo Chiat Place)

Sugalight Factory specialises in ice creams that are sugar-free low-fat. Most ice cream contains dairy cream, sugar and egg yolks. Sugalight uses none of this!
Sugalight ice creams are made using a premium natural sweetener made from corn known as Xylitol. Some of us may have encountered Xylitol as it is frequently used in chewing gums as a sweetener. Xylitol is known to help prevent tooth decay, lower calories than sugar and does not contribute to high sugar levels. Hence, Sugalight's ice cream are diabetes friendly and for those who are healthy conscious.
Sugalight ice cream comes in many flavours such as Rocky Chocolate, Plain Valrhona Chocolate, D24 Durian, Strawberry Bliss, Fat-Free Mango Sorbet, Bailey's Irish Cream, Cappuccino, Italian Hazelnut, Purple Yam - Ube, Pulut Hitam etc.
Menu
Cookie Monster
Clockwise from the Left (Vanilla Macadamia, Cookie Monster, Purple Yam-Ube)
Purple Yam - Ube made from purple yam specially imported from Philippines. I like yam ice cream and will frequently try out it out. Sugalight Factory's version is unique, it taste different and is more fragrant with hint of coconut.

Cookie Monster, similar to Cookies & Cream ice cream. Generous amount of Oreo cookie chunks in the ice cream such that you re able to get a chunk with each spoonful.
Clockwise from the Left (Plain Valrhona Chocolate, Chocomint, Pulut Hitam)
Plain Valrhona Chocolate ice cream is a must order if you are a chocolate lover. Thick, dark strong chocolate taste.

Chocomint, mint ice cream with chocolate chips. Sugalight's version was just nice for both of us. The mint flavour was not overpowering with the generous amount of chocolate chips, this was refreshing!

Pulut Hitam, Black Glutinous Rice dessert made into ice cream!
Root Beer Float (Sea Salt Horlicks Ice Cream) $5.00
We were lucky to be able to try Sugalight's latest product; Root Beer FloatRoot Beer Float consists of sugar free root beer with ice cream! Yes, sugar free! The best part is that we can't taste the difference between a sugar free or non sugar free root beer! We both like this! Brings back memories of the days when A&W was still in operating in Singapore! Now you can get your Root Beer Float at Sugalight!
Besides selling these, Sugalight sells a whole range of sugar-free products such as chocolates, cookies, sweets, marshmallows etc.
Only 1 box of sugar-free Root Beer ($18) left on the shelf. This is imported from USA.
If 1 box of Root Beer is too many for you, you can buy just 1 can at $1.80. On such a hot and humid day, i wish I can grab one of these!
If you are there, say hi to the bear sitting on the ledge. He is disgruntled from getting a sore bottom sitting there for so long without any salary. (as mentioned in Sugalight's facebook). Sugalight does corporate events and parties too. If you are thinking of getting ice creams for parties, this could be it.

Currently, Sugalight is having a promotion for students. Students get to buy 1 single scoop of ice cream and get the other free. This is valid on weekdays from 12pm to 6pm. Students will need to show their student IDs.

Sugalight also offers free delivery to your home or office for orders above $50. Each tub of ice cream retails for $10.50. If the order is less that $50, there will be an additional charge of $10.

Besides those flavours mentioned above,we tried many other flavours of ice cream. Our top favourites will be the Purple Yam - Ube, Chocomint and Root Beer Float! We can now enjoy our ice cream and root beer guilt-free!

Thank you Elgin and Sugalight for the kind hospitality and invite.

Domino's Pizza Singapore (Sembawang)

Another visit to Domino's Pizza. This time, I visited their outlet at Sembawang located at Sembawang Cottage; between Khatib camp and Chong Pang camp.
Domino's Pizza Singapore (Sembawang)
Went there on at Saturday night at 1030pm. The place was empty which I expected as most people prefer to order through their Delivery Hotline (6222 6333) and receive the food in the comfort of their homes.
Every outlet in Domino's Pizza have the same concept. Bright and cheerful ambience with it's signature colours; red blue and orange.

I ordered the Value Meal 1 ($29.80) which comprises:
- 1 Regular Pizza
- 1 Chicken Wings (4pcs) OR 1 Golden Roasted Drummet (4pcs)
- 1 Garlic Cheese Onion Rings
- 1 Twisty Bread or BreadStix or CinnaStix

Moreover, topped up $2 to make a Half & Half pizza. Do note, Half & Half pizza requires the sauce to be the same for both halves.

As mentioned in my previous post, Domino's Pizza has a 15 minute take-away guarantee. I received my orders, within 13 minutes! That is real fast and impressive.
Value Meal 1
Golden Roasted Drummet ( 4 pieces)
The Golden Roasted Drummet is one of my favourites! Juicy, tender and well-marinated! It is finger licking good!
Twisty Bread
Twisty Bread was surprisingly delicious!Freshly baked, it was soft, warm and chewy with garlic powder on top. It was addictive, with good balance of sweetness and saltiness. This is a must order!
Garlic Cheese Onion Rings
Garlic Cheese Onion Rings was not bad. But with sides like Golden Roasted Drummet and Twisty Bread, this got finish last.
Regular Pizza Half & Half (Top Half: Chicken Temptation, Bottom Half: Classified Chicken)
I ordered the Crunchy Thin Crust Regular Pizza, Chicken Temptation and Classified Chicken with Top Secret Sauce. These are my favourite pizzas along with Hawaiian Paradise. As I have posted on these two pizzas before, I shall not rant on. Check out this post for the reasons.

Yet, again Domino's Pizza did not disappoint. Having tried something new; Twisty Bread I am even more impressed. This is a must order!

Have you Domino's (verb)? If you have not, you do not know what you are missing!

Everything With Fries (Bugis Junction)

Cheese Burger with Garlic & Herbs (Straight Cut) $11.90

Everything With Fries (EWF) is started by the owners of Awfully Chocolate. It is a burger joint where the use of fresh ingredients is emphasis.

Recently, EWF has opened a new outlet at Bugis Junction. It is located at level 4, directly opposite Shaw Cinema next to the escalator.

Open concept with modern decoration.
Menu
Mains Menu
All mains are served with your choice of Fries and a Caesar Salad.
Fries Menu
5 different flavours of fries along with different cut;Shoestring Cut (skinny fries) or Straight Cut (thick fries) to choose from.

I visited EWF with 3 others on 14Feb 2012. Yes, Valentines's Day. Well, it is a working day and we had to eat lunch. We arrived at around 1220pm and were informed by the staff who gave us the menu that they ran out of salad.

We placed our order and started noticing, more people entering. It was obvious that the staff and kitchen could not cope with the crowd.

After waiting for more than half an hour minutes, we requested for fries to be served first as we were starving. (by the way, the serving staff informed us that normally the food will be served within 15 minutes)
Cheese Burger with Garlic & Herbs (Straight Cut) $11.90
How long more did we wait, I do not know. My food was the first to be served. As for the rest, theirs were served between 5 to 20 minutes later).

We were pleasantly surprised when we saw the salad. As earlier we were told that they ran out of salad. If you noticed, in the picture, a whole garlic was given! Well..I ordered the Garlic & Herbs Fries (Straight Cut).
Cheese Burger
The Cheese Burger consists of beef patty, topped with cheddar and stewed tomato concasse. The beef patty was soft but too dry. On a positive note, it does not taste like frozen processed beef patty. (by the way
EWF claims that everything is made freshly) The cheddar and tomato concasse complemented the flavour of this burger well.

What is concasse? Concasse is the process of coarsely chopping a vegetable. For tomoato concasse, the tomato will need to be peeled, seeded before chopping.  After which you can season it with salt and pepper to taste and use for e.g. as a sauce or for omelette.

The food is ok. The only issue I have with EWF is their ridiculously slow service. Even when I made payment, I gave my credit card to the staff. The staff took it without checking, coming back 5 minutes later to tell me they do not accept that credit card and asked for a new one. This could have been prevented if they know what is accepted, what is not (American Express, Visa, Mastercard?..)

A few days after my visit, I happened to see someone posted a picture of EWF at Bugis on facebook, I enquired on their service and I got the same feedback. Benefit of doubt: maybe their kitchen staff and service staff are new considering they just opened. (but again, that only shows clearly the lack of training) They should rectify this problem fast as it will not do any good to their reputation.

Dear customers,

To make up for the premature termination of the promotion, we would like to offer coupon holders a 10% discount off ANY ala carte hotplate dishes from our Grand Menu thereafter (upon sell-out of Sizzling Curry Rice at the respective outlets), through to 29 Feb 2012 (Wed).

Nothing can express our gratitude enough for the support you've given us. We hear your excitement and all the plans you've made to visit us during these 3 days and we really hate to disappoint you.
